Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

This really is a full service blog.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

Disappointing to see gov. newsom with his finger to the wind.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

When you’re in more danger from the IDF than from Russian shelling, that’s really bad.

People are weird.

Fight them, without becoming them!

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

Let there be snark.

Let me file that under fuck it.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

The next step after #hashtagactivism. Per the Washington Post‘s Adam Taylor:

On Saturday night, the strong words over the Ukrainian crisis took an unusually vulgar turn: Ukraine’s interim foreign minister, Andrii Deshchytsia, called Russian President Vladimir Putin a “d—head.”

“I am ready to be here with you and say, ‘Russia, get out of Ukraine,’ ” Deshchytsia said as he tried to calm protesters outside the Russian Embassy in Kiev. “Putin is a d—head, yes.”…

The song seems to have emerged from the football terraces, and united rival fans…

Kremlin supporters are understandably a little annoyed that Deshchytsia would publicly acknowledge an offensive football chant, but Deshchytsia claims he was trying to defuse a situation that saw Ukrainian nationalists trying to storm the Russian embassy…

I’m trying to imagine an American equivalent, but I can’t think of anyone who inspires the same kind of universal loathing. Donald Sterling? Donald Trump?

He was addressing a crowd of protesters that he agreed with, and repeated what they were chanting. I can easily see any number of teabaggers addressing a crowd in front of the White House saying, “yes yes, of *course* we should lynch the nigger….”

Which doesn’t mean that Putin isn’t a dickhead. Of course he is. But it shouldn’t be surprising to find a politician in a country he invaded that will say so in public.

Has this story been posted yet? I’m amazed this is legal.

    http://www.occupy.com/article/apartheid-detroit-water-corporations-not-people

In the spring, Detroit’s Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr ordered water shutoffs for 150,000 Detroit residents late on their bills. Orr is an unelected bureaucrat accountable only to Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, who appointed Orr and several other “emergency managers” in largely poor, black communities like Detroit, Benton Harbor, Flint, and Highland Park, to make all financial decisions on behalf of local elected governments.

Orr’s plan will shut off water for 1,500 to 3,000 Detroit residents each week. Neither Orr nor Homrich, the contracting company Orr hired to shut off residents’ water, answered calls for interview requests.

As the Michigan Citizen reported, residents with delinquent water bills are losing their water while prominent Detroit corporations with much larger delinquent water bills are being left alone. The Palmer Park Golf Club owes $200,000. Joe Louis Arena, home of the Detroit Red Wings, owes DWSD $80,000. Ford Field owes $55,000. Kevyn Orr is arguing that the shutoffs are necessary to pay for the DWSD infrastructure – yet when Detroit raised $1 billion in bonds to pay for new infrastructure, $537 million of it went to banks like JPMorgan Chase, UBS and Morgan Stanley to pay off interest instead.

    @Hal: A couple of things:

    1) It is inaccurate to say that those delinquent commercial accounts are being left alone. The department in question doesn’t comment on specific accounts. They do say that they are taking action on industrial and commercial accounts as well. Exactly what that means isn’t clear.

    2) Understand, the DWSD is owed $118 million in delinquent bills and more than half of the accounts are not paying. The city is bankrupt. Do you expect them to keep piping water to customers that don’t pay even though they don’t have the money?

The FBI and US Attorney’s office is investigating how former Virginia Democratic state senator Phillip Puckett came to resign his seat and throw state Senate control to the Republicans. Several of whom had promised him a job on the Virginia Tobacco Commission and to smooth the way to a judgeship for his daughter.

At the time, AG Mark Herring said his office would not be looking into the matter.

But now descend the Feds. And is it worse to offer a bribe or accept one? Numerically, more Republicans could fall here.

    Popcorn time.

(Puckett’s pukeitude threw an obstacle into Gov. McAuliffe’s expanding Medicaid, which the GOP staunchly opposes. But this could play out rather sweetly, actually …)

Ailill does not ever go very far from the house, it was just this summer that he went off the porch. I can’t see how he’d get lost. Of course after recent events with the neighbors I fear the worst. And altho we are in the village, there are woods right in the back.

(As an aside, the issue at Ford Field and Joe Louis is a dispute over how much is actually owed rather than a refusal to pay. Those are in arbitration.)

So in all, the story is not at all what was first presented.
