Dropped off the face of the earth again, because my buddy Kim, who is best friends with my sister Devon and who I have known my whole life (big crush on her older sister who had black hair and blue eyes and, well when I was 13, the most magnificent breasts on the planet- sorry, was that TMI? It’s the fucking truth, but should I share it? Fuck it, I was 13. I still am, maybe.) is in town, and we had dinner and she met all the beasties:

kimandthepiglets

Hadn’t seen Kim in almost a decade because she lives in St. Thomas (hence the fucking enviable tan, fer fucks’s sake). Lily’s nose was a touch out of joint because she is used to being the center of attention with new guests because she is, well, perfect, but Kim was all about Steve. She may try to steal him.

Black hair and blue eyes. *sigh* I met a man with that color combination in college and fell instantly in love. To this day (and I’m middle aged) I’m completely enamored with any man with that combo. It’s not very common.

How does one get to live in St Thomas?

As I understand it, first you move there because it’s where you want to live.

Then you look for a job, and take what’s available.

Of course, if one is an experienced sailing yacht delivery skipper, the thing goes a bit differently …

Just read the Facebook comments by Jim Wright of Stonekettle Station that someone here linked to earlier (one of the Jens?), and I want to point out that he specifically says that Americans Against the Tea Party had permission to post his rant that went viral. This was a matter of some discussion, mostly by me, in earlier threads here.

@WaterGirl: There is so much win in this comment. Plus you’re up watering before your morning swim? Ambitious. We’ve had so much rain here, I have to get up early to either ride or hike, because by after work, it’s stormy – dark clouds, thunder lightning, big rain drops. I’ve had to turn lights on in the house by 5pm everyday because it’s so dark.

p.s.not complaining because remember all too well the fires of last summer, but still worried because remember all too well the floods of last Sept.

Cole’s got plenty of women around, judging from the pictures on his blog over the piece. They seem like nice, smart, good looking women too. Even if he’s not involved with them except as friends, he’s a lucky guy.

@joel hanes: I have a cousin, from the middle of nowhere Maine, who picked up and moved there with her husband one day. If she had ever left the state before that it was only to go to Boston maybe twice in her life. Yet, she found a job, something in the tourism industry I guess. They never looked back. I think it’s like the old way of learning to swim — you can plan all you want, but you don’t have a choice but to act when you hit the water.

Of all the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas is the most expensive, with a quite concerning crime rate. It does have some beautiful resorts and golf courses, and lots of shops where your wife can spend thousands of dollars in just an afternoon. I prefer the BVI, more secluded and laid back.
