Chocolate and vodka. Just not together.
Was watching ESPN and getting tired of all the yakking. How come the game hadn’t started? Oops, it’s on ABC. And yet USA-Portugal is on ESPN later. Major-network acquisition fail.
raven
@Steeplejack: Only Sunday, it’s making me nuts!!!
WereBear
While I do not follow futbol, I cannot choose between chocolate and vodka.
Yatsuno
@WereBear: I could manage without vodka. Chocolate however…
Ronnie P
Why wouldn’t it be beer or vodka?
JPL
@WereBear: Instead of chocolate and vodka, try a nice beer from Belgium.
Tripod
This is the group (H) that the US group (G) will draw in the knockout stages.
Belgium is clearly the better side, but this group is a soft draw for the G group teams.
FIFA is going to have to do something about jiggering the rankings to get saner World Cup seedings.The CONCACAF sides have been steadily improving, and dropping them into pots as the #2 team is unbalancing the pots and knockout bracket.
burnspbesq
Russia is doing a good job so far of neutralizing Hazard and Lukaku.
Schlemizel
@WereBear:
I see no problem with the two together except that there are a couple of fine chocolate liquors already.
@JPL: Oh yeah! a nice tripel or wit.
dmsilev
@WereBear: There are those little chocolate bottles filled with various types of booze. Brandy is traditional, but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen vodka versions.
Schlemizel
Hope this is not too stupid a question but that Russian was on a mini break away & seemed to be about to pass the two defenders & go in alone but it was almost as if he stopped for a fraction of a second allowing a defender to come back & kick the ball away. Any idea why he did that? Out of gas? Expecting help? Just seemed like the moment to dig deep & try to blow past for a shot.
BTW – I may have to reevaluate my opinion of soccer finally breaking through in the US. Despite the relatively low numbers of views my non-sports fan wife has been watching games. Maybe it will happen.
dedc79
@Tripod: Agreed – three of the four CONCACAF teams are undefeated so far (and the fourth, Honduras, was robbed of a draw, at least, last game)
Stan Gable
Am I the only one who sees Fellaini and thinks of the dream sequence in Fletch where he imagines he plays for the Lakers – “he’s 6’5, 6’9″ with the afro”
jurassicpork
Sorry for the OT comment. I try to never do that. But this is my apology for the past five years and pre-emptive farewell as we don’t know where we’re going to be by midsummer. Thank you all for your readership and past monetary kindness but it looks as if we’ve finally hit that wall like the undeserving crash test dummies we are.
Tripod
@dedc79:
To be fair, there are non CONCACAF sides (Netherlands, Ghana) that do the same thing.
They base seedings on FIFA rankings, but there isn’t enough inter-Federation play for a representative sample size. Friendlies don’t cut it. Maybe increasing the field for The Confederations Cup?
Amir Khalid
Let’s hope things pick up in the second half.
@jurassicpork:
That’s news to me.
Yatsuno
@Amir Khalid: The boy cries wolf. Again.
MomSense
@jurassicpork:
Wow, I’m so sorry that you have been going through all this and I didn’t know or help in any way.I’m not sure what I can do now except to say that you have my support and lots of virtual hugs. I know that when my life was turned upside down on me about 5 years ago it was overwhelming and it has taken me a long time to regroup. I will keep you in my thoughts and hope that I will “see” you here from time to time.
Morzer
Well, it’s been a pretty dire game so far. My wife has decided to root for Belgium because the Great Russian People have apparently eaten all the world’s supply of sturgeon.
It looks as if Absolutely Fabiolous Capello is working his usual magic.
Roxy
If the game ends in a tie we will have chocolate flavored vodka.
Amir Khalid
Per the Beeb liveblog, Belgum’s King Philippe and Queen Mathilde are at the Maracana. At least Belgium aren’t losing.
Alex S.
The belgian team is very young, maybe too impressed, but actually, I don’t care, I’m a little soccered out.
burnspbesq
Lukaku was ineffective, but in fairness he got no service. The Russian defense is very well organized, and neither Hazard nor Fellaini has risen to the occasion.
Schlemizel
@Yatsuno:
I seem to remember him leaving here on other occasions. I’m not sure exactly what to make of pork. He seems to always be in need. That could be a cursed life but it seems to be whining and begging. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt but it does seem to be beg, rinse, repeat.
Morzer
The Guardian live-blogger isn’t taking boredom well:

Russians make excellent chocolate. However, Belgium makes great beer–the same cannot be said of Russia.
Robert Waldmann
The really smart money is on the waffle (heads I win tails I didn’t bet)
Morzer
@Amir Khalid:
I wish to complain that you, as the responsible deity, have rather screwed up this game.
scav
@Morzer: the one last night was in a similar vein, expressed differently, but likewise enjoyable.
Morzer
@scav:
I think I prefer honest embitterment to the sort of commentary that pretends that all is well and that the players’ mutual brilliance is resulting in a thrilling contest.
Amir Khalid
@Morzer:
I put in an occasional dull match so that you’ll enjoy the good ones more.
Morzer
@Amir Khalid:
Is this your way of saying that you work in mysterious ways?
scav
@Morzer: Um, what kind of sane, explicable, reasonable, competant dieties did you grow up with? Have you watched how some of their front-bench treat their favored peoples?
Alex S.
10 minutes left until release, no! I can’t wait, AMIR, god of games, kill me now!
burnspbesq
I was on the Belgian bandwagon early. They haven’t done much to validate that today.
burnspbesq
All it takes some days is one.
Origuy
Oops, somebody scored. That wasn’t supposed to happen.
⚽️ Martin
Well, not quite as patient as Argentina, but pretty close.
Amir Khalid
@Alex S.:
Sorry, no can do. My deity contract is only for the World Cup. I’m not in charge of smiting people unto death. The Union of Deities is very strict about things like that.
Morzer
@Origuy:
Unpossible. Inconceivable.
Why now?
Alex S.
Belgium now has gained six points with minimal effort.
Amir Khalid
@Origuy:
I took pity on Alex S.
Morzer
I guess the Belgians had a Russia blood to the head.
scav
@Origuy: more or less the last two (context) comments at the guard, with a tinge of the capricious gods abusing commenters thrown in for good measure. rather eerie.
Morzer
@Alex S.:
And while looking about as unconvincing as possible. Mind you, any side that puts its faith in Zhirkov deserves some disappointment.
burnspbesq
Mirallas knows he should have buried that.
Alex S.
Belgium played as if their coach was Fabio Capello.
burnspbesq
That isn’t going to strike much fear into the hearts of anybody in Group G.
Alex S.
@Amir Khalid:
Thanks, I saw the light.
Alex S.
@burnspbesq:
It’s as if they ran out of teams after seven groups.
Morzer
@burnspbesq:
I bet it struck fear into the hearts of anyone with tickets for the next Belgium game. Imagine being trapped in a stadium in the heat and humidity with nothing to do but watch this “team”.
burnspbesq
Oh, Lord Amir, can we possibly have 90 minutes of end-to-end, run-and-gun football from South Korea and Algeria?
Morzer
@Alex S.:
I am trying very hard not imagine a group which included both England and Belgium.
burnspbesq
@Morzer:
They have pretty good beer in Brazil. That’s some consolation.
Alex S.
@Morzer:
Immediately after the goal, I wanted to say that England played better than Belgium.
Morzer
@burnspbesq:
I bet FIFA has jacked up the prices in the stadium though.
Amir Khalid
@burnspbesq:
We’ll see.
scav
@Morzer: After pushing through laws so that it could sell Budweizer in the stadiums at all, I doubt FIFA is opening those arena doors to locals either.
mali muso
Good grief. Even the peppy commentators on Univision could not save that one. Glad I missed most of it whilst out shopping for groceries for the US-Portugal cookout tonight.
Please let Algeria-South Korea be mildly interesting. In they name, Amir Khalid, we beseech thee.
Steeplejack
@raven:
Here’s the longest version I could find of that intro/outro bumper music you’ve been asking about. I think this is it; let me know if it’s not.

The millenials in oregon trying to put in a ballot measure for equal voting! here
A worthy goal, not sure how to get people to sign it. But I’m thinking of doing the kit.

If we kill more Russians, *we* win. If they kill more Frenchmen, *they* win.

Well, I’m off to a Brazilian barbecue at Bro’ Man’s palatial Arlington estate. The weather is perfect—sunny and 77°. Bro’ Man and his partner were legally married in Maryland last year, but now, after the advances in same-sex marriage and other things—the BIL got his green card—they’re having a big wedding ceremony and party next month at a hotel downtown. So the BIL’s sister and her family just arrived today from Fortaleza for a vacation in advance of the big event.
I think we’ll all be on the same page regarding USA-Portugal later. The Brazilians seem to sneer good-naturedly at the Old World Portuguese. Although I think there may be one cousin there who is married to an actual Portuguese—well, a European Mozambican—so the proprieties will be observed.
Origuy
@scav: I saw an ad for a Russian beer on the electronic billboard that is the wall of the stadium, but it was in Cyrillic. Сибирская Корона (Siberian Crown) is bottled in Omsk but owned by the same Belgian company that owns Anheuser-Busch.
