Tim Flannery, the Giants 3rd base coach, is convinced that Buster Posey has the speed of Rickey Henderson. It’s the only explanation why Posey has been green lighted on the basepaths the way he has during the playoffs, and now, the Series.
Update: I’ve always liked Hunter Pence.

We’re winning.
Y’all are losing.
Scamp Dog
So what is Ray James Shield’s name now? And why do they use his middle name? That’s kind of rare in baseball, seems to me.
Sorry, couldn’t resist.
Kathleen
I’m just so happy that “Not The Cardinals” are in the World Series that I almost don’t care who wins, though I have a sentimental spot for the Giants (always have had).

Oops, I thought this WWF World Series thread was about the Palins vs Alaska.
M. Bouffant
Oooops, there goes the momentum.
P.S.: The only “Big Game James” is Laker James Worthy.

O/T, Ben Bradlee has died.

@srv: you can keep them for now, but do you really want me to call you every time I’m planning on using them?

The SFPL and KCPL are in a very, very polite twitter feud over it http://www.sbnation.com/lookit/2014/10/21/7029079/kansas-city-public-library-twitter-fight-world-series-san-francisco-royals-giants

@SiubhanDuinne: A shame.
I hate to be this petty, but I wonder about the social standing of his wife now that he’s gone. And I wonder if she’s smart enough to wonder too. (Aaarrgh. Why can’t I remember her name?)
ETA: Sally Quinn! Ugh.
Mr Stagger Lee
Really the the World Series is going to have the San Francisco Giants versus the New York Yankee/Boston Red Sox AAAA(Thats right four As)farm team Because if the Royals win,no way will the Royals will pay to keep them. Oh not to piss in the Royals punch bowl, but isn’t the Royals owned by a former WalMart executive?
JPL
@SiubhanDuinne: The Post died along time before he did but may he rest in peace.
Turgidson
Cubs fan living in the SF area (now East Bay, so I guess I can adopt the A’s).
The first Giants WS title was novel and gave us Cubs fans hope (the Giants owned one of the longest droughts at the time, though barely a blink of an eye compared to the Cubs).
The second Giants win was surprising and retained some novelty, but was less interesting.
This playoff run is just fucking lame. Hard to explain why it’s so different than the previous, but it just is. Maybe I’m finally fed up with the “fans” who come out of the woodwork in September with newly-bought hats and t-shirts to flood local bars to cheer on a team whose players they can’t name aside from Buster Posey, Pablo “Panda” Sandoval (god I hate that nickname), and mayyybe Lincecum, if they remember he’s still actually on the team now that he sucks.
So. Go Royals.
Turgidson
@Kathleen:
Agreed on the “not the Cardinals” quality of this World Series. Hate those fuckers.
raven
@Turgidson: Well goddamn man, who do you want? I’ve been a Cubbie fan all my 65 years and that shit ain’t happenin.

A thread that’s not about Captain Trips?

@raven:
1. Not the f’ing Yankees
1a. Not the f’ing Cardinals
2. Not the Red Sox
3. Not the Giants (for now)
after that, I’m generally OK with anyone winning.
SiubhanDuinne
@JPL:
Agree. But WaPo’s glory days were when Bradlee and Katie Graham were running the show, and I’m happy to give him credit. RIP indeed.

@SiubhanDuinne: always had a soft spot for “All The President’s Men” and the fact that there was one newspaper editor with the balls to stand against the tide that was the Nixon machine. Doesn’t mean that the guy was a saint and maybe he had a hard-on for being anti-Nixon but in the end, the faith in the story was vindicated and Bradlee played his part in getting it into print. RIP Ben, just wish you hadn’t felt the need to get into bed with Sally Quinn.

@raven:
Also, re the Cubs, I actually do think Epstein and Hoyer might finally be building a sustainably good team right now. But we’ll have to see how all those kids (who need to stay the hell off my lawn!!) play the next couple years. They definitely seem talented though.
That said, I won’t believe the Cubs’ odds of winning the WS are anything other than zero until the final out is made. Maybe not even then.
raven
@Turgidson: stinkin jankees
Wally Ballou
All I want is a well-played, competitive series that hopefully goes the distance.
That said, Shields’ first inning brought this Tiger fan uncomfortable memories of Verlander in ’12. Three runs on five hits is not how to start Game 1 of the Fall Classic.
raven
@Turgidson: Having been down here in Georgia for 30 years I find that the Cubs became a second choice for me. Kind of like the Illini or the Bulldogs (in football). I always follow my old teams but I guess 14 division championships in a row moved me a bit.
raven
The Democratic effort to pump up the African-American vote in Georgia just took an interesting turn.
A reader has sent us this early-voting turnout mailer sent out by the Georgia Democratic party that focuses on the shooting of Michael Brown and subsequent unrest in Ferguson, Mo. It contains an interesting line that concedes the problem of low interest among black voters:
Tree With Water
@Turgidson: The Cubs. “Every team can have a bad century”. Go Giants..
Roger Moore
@Mr Stagger Lee:
It doesn’t really work that way. Post-season performance has relatively little to do with either when a player gets expensive or how much he’ll earn. If the Royals aren’t going to hold onto their home-grown players, that’s going to happen whether they win the World Series or not. If anything, winning slightly increases their chances of staying, since it will tend to give the Royals an attendance and income boost that they at least theoretically could invest in keeping some players.
Also, too, there are plenty of teams beyond the Yankees and Red Sox who go after expensive players. For example, the highest paid player in MLB in 2014 was Zach Greinke of the Dodgers, and the highest paid player in the AL was a tie between Prince Fielder of the Rangers and Robinson Cano of the Mariners.
Roger Moore
@Turgidson:
My rule of thumb when I don’t have an established rooting interest is to root for the team that’s had a longer championship drought. I’ll make an exception if the Yankees are somehow the team with the longer drought; they have won so many they could go for a few centuries without winning and still deserve to wait their turn.

OT.. Betty how was the FL debate? I punished myself by listening to the MA Governor’s debate, the NH Senate debate and then I started the SC governor’s debate. Ending with SC was interesting, because I’d just move rather than vote.
Howard Beale IV
@SiubhanDuinne: I beat y’all to it in the other thread.
beth
@raven: Holy crap, the comments at that link! Are there no Democrats in that state?
Betty Cracker
@JPL: Same old bullshit. We’ll have to hope FanGate drags Crist across the line. I thought he won it, but there were no obvious meltdowns.
raven
@beth: Under no circumstances ever read comments in any paper in Georgia. Ever.
SiubhanDuinne
@raven: yup, same here.
SiubhanDuinne
@Howard Beale IV:
By 30 minutes. Sorry, missed that.
beth
@JPL: I posted about the SC debate on the last post. The black guy who seemed to only care about legalizing marijuana and asked what the question was whenever it was his turn was qjite a hoot. And fuck Nikki Haley who is so owned by the fucking NRA that she couldn’t agree that domestic violence perpertrators should have their guns taken away.
jake the antisoshul soshulist
I can’t stamd Joe Buck. At least Tim McCarver is not there.
I was leaning toward the Royals, but Buck’s chearleading for the Giants has solidified that.
JPL
@beth: I didn’t listen to all of it but I found it confusing. They are all concerned about the Federal government mandating education for illegals. That’s a Supreme Court decision, right? Not one candidate challenged the statement.
I find out that when I listen to debates such as that, I lose brain cells.
beth
@JPL: Yeah and what about the guy who said that under Obamacare you can’t get maternity benefits? What’s the point if they can lie with impunity?
What happened with Kay Hagan not showing up for her debate? I’m seeing all sorts of celebrating from wingnut facebook friends about it?
JPL
@beth: CSpan must of had a delay. That was the first question and I was concerned that no one understood the difference between the Federal Government and the Supreme Ct.
The MA debate was really good. To the point and both candidates answered the questions. The NH debate had was similar to the Palin/Biden debate. The only words out of Scott Brown’s mouth was Isis and Border. It didn’t matter the question. Then Cspan started the SC debate and I just couldn’t take it anymore. They just blame the Federal government no matter what.
Now I’m listening to the police interviews at the party that Palin was at. TPM has it. I’m trying to cleanse my brain.
JPL
@beth: Kay Hagan didn’t show up? Supposedly Martha Coakley, who is running for MA governor, didn’t show up for a debate but it was something she wasn’t scheduled for. Hopefully, it’s the same thing with Hagan.
Brian R.
Nah, still finding it hard to give a shit about baseball.
So, so, so, so boring.

@beth: I just googled and it’s only covered by Breitbart so I think it was not an agreed upon debate.
raven
@JPL:

Giants baseball. Bandwagon giving rides as we watch.

JPL
@raven: Maybe that’s the new thing to score political points.
Show up for a debate that you knew the other person didn’t agree to.

@jake the antisoshul soshulist: Dan Shulman and Aaron Boone, on ESPN Radio, are the thinking person’s WS announcing team.
Jon Miller (Giants radio) and Denny Matthews (Royals radio) are good alternatives as well if you have MLB.com audio. Hall of Famers both.

Where’s Joe Morgan these days? Off to ask Mr. Google.
beth
@JPL: But why would Time Warner agree to sponsor a debate only one candidate agreed to show up for? Okay, forget I asked that. It’s late and my mind is mush from watching the SC debate and reading comments in a Georgia paper.

@Roger Moore:
Have many rules of thumb when my team is not in it, but when all else fails, I root against red state teams. The more pain and disappaointment heaped upon wingnuts, the better.
Loved watching San Fran, lead by long-haired freak Tim Lincecum
beat Texas Rangers (esp. w/W in stands), and I will be rooting for San Fran in this one.
p.a.
@raven: spent an hour for MoveOn calling perceived progressives in N Carolina for Hagen. From my experience the usual:90% hangups, but that includes the elderly who hung up before I realized I had to shout. Best comments: from a woman who wouldn’t say who she was voting for:”you people are wearing me out. . From a Hagen early voter when I asked if he will be absentee or in person: “In person. I want them to see me vote.” Awesome!

We have some not insubstantial number of racists here in Minnesota but it was not until I lived in the South that I knew people who thought it was acceptable to wear a sheet in public. It was eye opening for the kids too.
Tree With Water
@The Dangerman: Buck, Reynolds, and Verducci are an great team. Unfortunately, no radio signals hereabouts mean I can’t listen to the Giants own broadcasters, who are the Beatles of their profession. But these FOX guys are really very good.

Seattle TV news is worse quality than most podunk burgs with 100l people.
