What are the chances that Jon Stewart's Daily Show retirement is linked to Brian Williams? @NBCNews did interview Stewart for MTP…

FTFY. And the answer is NO, BTW.

Reading the news is beneath Stewart

They think? I had no idea.

quite a CV

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: When I first saw whose tweet was reproduced in this post, my first thought was: Is AL trolling Richard Mayhew?
Sondra
Really? Let’s see, on the scales of whatever…on one side we have a comedy show and on the other we have a very important member of the actual news team with his own report every nigh.
Talk about false equivalency…because so what. They are friendly. Maybe even friends. So what?
Villago Delenda Est
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Yes, one of Richard’s favorite ‘pundits’ on health care…a total idiot in all regards.

@Roger Moore:
What do they think? What, do they think?
Alison
LOLOL, did Avik mix up his Twitter and match.com profile pictures? Button your shirt, creep.
Also, Lawrence spent, from what I saw, his entire show about Stewart leaving. Because, you know. Literally nothing else happened in the world today.
srv
While Stewart is an egomaniac, even he realizes the country has changed and the schtick has gotten old. Smart enough to not join in cliff diving with his old party for 2016.
Colbert can at least act, or at least do a good enough impression of Letterman.
TheMightyTrowel
OT my australian permanent residency came through today!
Adam Lang
This is totally in character for Roy. Which is to say, everything he writes is balanced between ‘wrong’ and ‘does not even rise to the level of wrong’.
Tree With Water
I assume Williams has already landed on his multi-millionaire feet. But who pulled that 6 month figure out of their ass? It would have been fun to be a fly on the wall when it was arrived at. 6 months? Why not 6 years? For all his reputation as a journalist is concerned, it may as well have been 600 years plus change. Jeezuz, those people are hilarious..

Avik Toy’s a maroon. I know Colberts show was better but i am really going to miss Jon Stewart. I hope the successor is worthy.
Amir Khalid
@TheMightyTrowel:
Yay you!
Tommy
@Tree With Water: I would have loved to be in that meeting. Did they just throw darts at a calendar?
TheMightyTrowel
@Amir Khalid: thanks! It’s been a shitty week so far so this was a particularly nice thing to learn
Tommy
@TheMightyTrowel: Congrats. I do have a question for you. How long did it take. I had a coworker get Australian citizenship in under two years. A women from Zimbabwe. Took another friend of mine from Holland, and he married an American, almost five years to get citizenship here.
BillinGlendaleCA
@Tommy: Zimbabwe may be part of the British Commonwealth, that may make a difference. In grad school my Malaysian GF and roommate had easy entry to Canada since both Canada and Malaysia are Commonwealth countries.

None what-so-ever, I recall Jon talking about moving on months ago, around when Colbert announced his retirement. That said, I think Jordan Kepplet, Aasif Mandvia (most likely) or Jessica Williams are the most likely replacements.

Three Muslim students were gunned down in their home in Chapel Hill.
Origuy
@NZ Expat: More on that Chapel Hill story.
Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism
@Origuy: I was about to link the WRAL story on the murders.
I haven’t seen anyone else mention that the guy arrested had turned himself in after the shooting.
Baud
@NZ Expat:
Damn.
PurpleGirl
NO! No no no no no no no no…
That song, that earworm…
Death to the GEC…
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo…
Baud
I’m surprised it took this long.
Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism
@PurpleGirl: I always replace that earworm with Terry Pratchett’s send-up of that song — and mall Santas — from Hogfather.
Baud
Watch what you say here, Amir.
Elizabelle
Watching Morning Joke. Who just told us how hard it is on him and his family that he’s an “analyst. A political analyst.” It’s his job. People are so mean.
And they’re so mean to that nice Brian Williams. Just vile.
TheMightyTrowel
@Tommy: PR and citizenship are different. Both have lots of things that play into them. Country of origin, profession, skills etc. I was eligible for pr after 2 years on my visa, took a year to get all the paperwork together. My partner is a brit so he could apply for citizenship now. I’d need another few years on pr as I’m American, but i haven’t looked into it as i have no plans to take aussie citizenship.
BillinGlendaleCA
@Elizabelle: I’ve been watching too. Hey Joe, it’s a cruel world out there for all of us; not just “analysts”.
Oh, and the compensation is a tad bit less for the rest of us and it’s been decreasing.
Betty Cracker
@Elizabelle: Another multimillionaire crying about how hard his lot in life is. Boo-fucking-hoo.
Baud
@Elizabelle:
He could resign. Just sayin’.
mai naem mobile
@Elizabelle: i haven’t been watching Mornin Ho that much recently but i did watch it yesterday and it was nice to see Mika actually giving Ho a hard time about Netanyahu. Ho came across as a bigger moron than normal
Baud
@Elizabelle:
And you misspelled “anal cyst.”
Patricia Kayden
@Elizabelle: Why are you torturing yourself with that drivel? Don’t you have Freespeechtv? I’m waiting for MSNBC to get a clue and replace Morning Joe with something more substantive like cartoons.
mai naem mobile
My sister and I were talking about Kayla Mueller. She made an interesting point. It seemed like the media starting talking about Mueller all of a sudden before she the supposed date she got killed. She thinks the Obama people already knew she d been killed, they just didn’t want it to go down like Foleys announcement with the parents. It doesn’t make a difference as far as the death – it’s still ISIS being animals.
mai naem mobile
@Patricia Kayden: i thought freespeech was only on Directv?
bemused
@Elizabelle:
It’s always all about Joe, isn’t it? He just gets no respect, poor baby.
PurpleGirl
@TheMightyTrowel: Congratulations! Hopes it helps your academic career a lot.
OzarkHillbilly
@Baud: Heh.
TheMightyTrowel
@PurpleGirl: told my head of school this morning. Her response? ‘This is terrible news! Now i can’t have you deported of you disrupt staff meetings!’
Elizabelle
Do these people not get that Brian WIlliams’ credibility is gone? He is not going to be back in that anchor seat. This is not the principal’s office.
However, NBC News’ credibility was gone long before yesterday.
Used to be my favorite network. Now we know Tom Brokaw is a pompous old ass; network gives cover to Meet the Republicans and Andrea Mitchell Greenspan and there is NEVER a war that these serious people are not beating the drums for. I think they’re porn for defense contractors.
I like Lester Holt. Hope they give the anchor chair to him.
Iowa Old Lady
Maybe John Oliver will replace Stewart permanently.
rk
And maybe vaccines cause autism. Someone needs to tell this moran that correlation is not causation.
Elizabelle
@rk: Andrew Sullivan has more free time too. Coincidence, you say … ???
Elizabelle
@Iowa Old Lady: John Oliver would be a great replacement. Wonder what HBO would think about that.
Oliver needs a non paywall platform.
SiubhanDuinne
@Baud:
I shouldn’t be surprised that CNN doesn’t know how to spell the last name of the former KS Governor and former Secretary of HHS. I went to the original story, and they have it wrong twice. (For the record, it’s Sebelius, not Sibelius. She’s only been a nationally recognized figure since 2003.) Makes me crazy when perfectly avoidable errors like this (from a supposedly professional news organization) distract from the substance of the story.
As for the substance, well, Brownback once again proves he’s a vindictive, reactionary old bigot. Like you, I’m just surprised it took so long.
Omnes Omnibus
@SiubhanDuinne: I am pretty sure she composed “Finlandia.”
Hildebrand
@Elizabelle: I like Oliver where he is (everything goes up on Youtube the next day, so paywall really isn’t too much of an issue) – HBO gives him free reign, he has the luxury of time for the show itself with no commercials to worry about, and has the time during the week to really shape and research his topic of the week. It is a perfect format for him.
Elizabelle
@Hildebrand: Good points all. And the youngs are way more skilled with youtube and the internets than us “I used to watch Chet Huntley, as a child — those were the glory days” types.
Egypt Steve
I sorta thought that they might be connected in the sense that Stewart’s “retirement” announcement might be a stunt, a parody of the Williams melt-down. Too bad I was wrong.
SiubhanDuinne
@Omnes Omnibus:
Heh. If life hands you Lemminkainen, make Lemminkainenade.
Amir Khalid
@Baud:
My profile is much lower than Zunar’s. He’s still in the media; I’ve been out since my retirement for health reasons in 2008. I doubt the Home Ministry is monitoring Balloon Juice. (Touch wood.)
Mnemosyne (iPad Mini)
@Iowa Old Lady:
I remember seeing an interview with Oliver where he said his wife did NOT want him to take on the grind of doing a show daily — I think the quote was something like, I told her they wanted me to host “The Daily Show” while Jon was on leave and all of the blood drained from her face. So I think he prefers doing a weekly show.
Funkula
I got the impression from Roy’s tweet, since he mentions Stewart being considered for Press the Meat, that he thinks Stewart might be in line to take over NBC News, not that he’s somehow tainted by association. Which is also a really dumb idea, but much less maliciously so.
Patricia Kayden
@mai naem mobile: I watch it on the internet.
Annamal
We’d been figuring he was likely to leave ever since John Oliver did such a good job while he was off.
Not because JO was better, instead because it has to be a fairly intense and stressful job and JO showed that it is possible for someone else to do it and be accepted by the audience.
I think Stewart’s paid his dues.
I felt the same about Colbert, he did amazing things but the amount of work that must go into maintaining that character.
Denali
I know this thread is dead but this theory regarding BW just came to mind. His story is close enough to Hilary’s story re dodging fire in Bosnia I think to be linked. When she campaigns, the Republicans can and will use it to show that she is a liar and that liars will not be tolerated. It is now imprinted on the mind of the pubic.
