As is our custom on Fathers’ Day, the mister got to pick a dessert and have it served to him while watching television, as if he were the King of Sheba. He chose a banana split:
I had a junior version, and it was delicious. Please feel free to discuss whatever. Open thread!

Anybody watch The Spoils of Babylon?

What is this, a PC banana split? Where are the peanuts sprinkled over the top?
The banana split I grew up with also featured a scoop of vanilla, a scoop of strawberry and a scoop of chocolate.
Just the thing on a hot summer day.
NotMax
Impressed that you actually have the traditional serving ware for a banana split!
(Or is that repurposed pickle dish?)
OzarkHillbilly
You know what I got for Father’s Day? The dishes. Never have celebrated that, never will. Come to think of it, I don’t celebrate my birthday or Xmas either. (I do acknowledge Xmas but only if someone says, “Come over for Xmas.”)

Wasn’t Sheba a queen? Not that there’s anything wrong with that

I saw this interesting comment from Tree With Water in a thread below:
Sometimes really good, thought-provoking comments appear at the end of fading threads and get overlooked.

@Germy Shoemangler: A week and a half ago, my computer was slower than a snail’s space. The computer was fine, it was the feed from Uverse. Next time, I’m going to call.

@Germy Shoemangler:
Huh. My daughter is a gamer and has noted some slowness of the internet recently (U-verse) and yesterday I could not get to gmail. Hmmmm…
Patricia Kayden
I’ve never had a banana split before. That photograph is so tempting. It’s now on my bucket list.
Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism
@JPL: UVerse is getting ready to add a new higher speed tier. I figured the slowdown was to encourage people to think about upgrading.

Josh Ernest needs a big raise. I have no idea how he puts up with the bullshit questions. Does the President use the n word in his own home?
A majority of the questions had to do with the President’s use of a word.

@JPL: Speaking as someone who frequently finds himself on the receiving end of those types of calls, it works a lot better if you have actual data. Two independent sites worth bookmarking are http://www.speedtest.net/ and http://www.bandwidthplace.com/ (you can also get “speed tests” from your ISP, but they play all sorts of tricks.) Run tests from time to time, write down the results. See if you get variability by time of day, day of week, etc. That way when you call you can sound well-informed. If there is a genuine issue, the person you’ve called will be happy for the information.

@JPL:
The president has two young daughters in his home. Does the press really think he uses that word in front of them in any context other than, “Don’t say that word in this house”?

When I was about 4 or 5 years old, a Dairy Queen was built less than a block from our house, so anything fancier than a bowl of ice cream came from up the hill. A banana split was the ultimate treat; three blobs of ice cream with strawberry, chocolate and pineapple toppings. No nuts. I can’t remember if they had whipped cream or not. Seems like everything at the DQ has whipped cream now…
JPL
@Gin & Tonic: Thanks.. My son was here at the time and ran the tests.
I’m going to bookmark them though.
Since I don’t download a lot of movies, I thought that ATT was punishing me since I don’t use their tv service,

@Face
No surprise there. Whichever cases the conventional wisdom tags as “big” are nearly always left until the last day.
Tom Q
@Face: Didn’t they say last week that, because of the volume of cases, they were going to issue some rulings this Thursday, as well?
In any case, it’s not unusual for the Court to hold the headline cases till the end. I remember the Webster case (which we thought would be the final word on abortion) came on the last day of the term.

@Face: No. They are isolated enough that I doubt such considerations cross their minds.
In fact, if they were choosing, it might be better to announce controversial decisions when they still have time to spend in the Court’s bubble.
Brachiator

No. It’s not unusual for the Court to leave big cases until the end of the term.
But even here, there will be room for a lot of discussion with friends, family and other folk over the holiday weekend. Social media may be very lively as well.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) will call for the Confederate flag to be removed from the state capitol, multiple outlets reported Monday.
Haley is set to speak at a press conference at 4 p.m. ET Monday. According to CNN, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) will join the governor and call for the flag to be placed in a museum.
Graham previously said the flag “is part of who we are,” but that he would be “fine” with taking the symbol down.

This is horrible: Former baseball player and MLB Network analyst Darryl Hamilton was found shot to death yesterday in an apparent murder-suicide.
And in other baseball news, it seems ESPN has uncovered a notebook from Pete Rose’s old bookie showing that Charlie Hustle gambled on games while playing as well as managing. One would assume this puts the kibosh on Rose’s attempts at reinstatement.
OzarkHillbilly

@gbear: although DQ is goss fast food crappy etc., it was pretty much my ideal as a kid. We were promised a banana split if we ever hit a homerun in little league. In my entire career, I had one flukey, inside-the-park homer (I imagine the scoring would be more like a bloop single, one or two errors, and fielder indifference); but the resulting banana split is still on my list of favorite things in my life.

I am glad and surprised that Haley, Scott and Graham are now clamoring to take down the flag. Though it shouldn’t matter it feels it’s all about political expedience (GOP debate in SC where flag issue is the focus?). Then again the fact that political expedience has swung in the direction of finally taking down the flag is a triumph. A late one but I will take it.

I put up some links at the end of the previous thread. Long excerpts from a link Davebro put up, a 1999 interview with Dr. Daniel Hollis, Civil War expert and longtime prof at the University of South Carolina. Governor Fritz Hollings appointed him to the commission planning the Civil War centennial.
Lots of detail of what was going on in South Carolina in 1961 around the time the flag went up. Grim.

You can’t discuss the history of the civil rights movement without mentioning the n-word.
You can’t summarize the hatred of Jim Crow without…
You can’t define racism in America without referring to the n-word.
Discussing racism while opposing it and discussing the n-word in the context of how racists use it is NOT the same thing as using the n-word as an inflammatory racist slur. I’m sorry if people are offended by the use of the word historically… we have had some very hostile history in this world.
It is a good thing that we now have a proper attitude about calling people terrible things and using their race as a weapon against them. This is despicable behavior at any time, and I would never engage in racist hatred as many southerners have, racists have all over the place not just down south, I guess.
Some days all the news is bad. Sounds like the first line of a sad song…
