Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

The snowflake in chief appeared visibly frustrated when questioned by a reporter about egg prices.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

The lights are all blinking red.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

As is our custom on Fathers’ Day, the mister got to pick a dessert and have it served to him while watching television, as if he were the King of Sheba. He chose a banana split:

I had a junior version, and it was delicious. Please feel free to discuss whatever. Open thread!

What is this, a PC banana split? Where are the peanuts sprinkled over the top?

The banana split I grew up with also featured a scoop of vanilla, a scoop of strawberry and a scoop of chocolate.

Just the thing on a hot summer day.

I saw this interesting comment from Tree With Water in a thread below:

This has happened with my service over the past few weeks. The Guardian.com reports:

“Major internet providers, including AT&T, Time Warner and Verizon, are slowing data from popular websites to thousands of US businesses and residential customers in dozens of cities across the country, according to a study released on Monday.

The study, conducted by internet activists BattlefortheNet, looked at the results from 300,000 internet users and found significant degradations on the networks of the five largest internet service providers (ISPs), representing 75% of all wireline households across the US.

The findings come weeks after the Federal Communications Commission introduced new rules meant to protect “net neutrality” – the principle that all data is equal online – and keep ISPs from holding traffic speeds for ransom..”.

Sometimes really good, thought-provoking comments appear at the end of fading threads and get overlooked.

@JPL: Speaking as someone who frequently finds himself on the receiving end of those types of calls, it works a lot better if you have actual data. Two independent sites worth bookmarking are speedtest.net/ and bandwidthplace.com/ (you can also get “speed tests” from your ISP, but they play all sorts of tricks.) Run tests from time to time, write down the results. See if you get variability by time of day, day of week, etc. That way when you call you can sound well-informed. If there is a genuine issue, the person you’ve called will be happy for the information.

When I was about 4 or 5 years old, a Dairy Queen was built less than a block from our house, so anything fancier than a bowl of ice cream came from up the hill. A banana split was the ultimate treat; three blobs of ice cream with strawberry, chocolate and pineapple toppings. No nuts. I can’t remember if they had whipped cream or not. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) will call for the Confederate flag to be removed from the state capitol, multiple outlets reported Monday.

Haley is set to speak at a press conference at 4 p.m. ET Monday. According to CNN, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) will join the governor and call for the flag to be placed in a museum.

Graham previously said the flag “is part of who we are,” but that he would be “fine” with taking the symbol down.

This is horrible: Former baseball player and MLB Network analyst Darryl Hamilton was found shot to death yesterday in an apparent murder-suicide.

And in other baseball news, it seems ESPN has uncovered a notebook from Pete Rose’s old bookie showing that Charlie Hustle gambled on games while playing as well as managing. One would assume this puts the kibosh on Rose’s attempts at reinstatement.

In my entire career, I had one flukey, inside-the-park homer (I imagine the scoring would be more like a bloop single, one or two errors, and fielder indifference); but the resulting banana split is still on my list of favorite things in my life.

I put up some links at the end of the previous thread. Long excerpts from a link Davebro put up, a 1999 interview with Dr. Daniel Hollis, Civil War expert and longtime prof at the University of South Carolina. Governor Fritz Hollings appointed him to the commission planning the Civil War centennial.

Lots of detail of what was going on in South Carolina in 1961 around the time the flag went up. Grim.

Watching Christopher Lee in “Horror Train,” but checked Fox News at the half hour. Host was scoffing at Obama saying the US has more mass shootings than anywhere else.

That’s their meme — what does that Obama know? — and they’re sticking to it.

Nothing about the flag of treason. Back on the Horror Train (which is not a bad nickname for Fox News, come to think of it…)

    @Elizabelle:

I don’t think I ever saw this one. It’s noted as “Horror Express” in the Wiki.

A couple of production details (no plot spoiler stuff)

Securing Lee and Cushing was a coup for Gordon, since it lent a certain atmosphere reminiscent of Hammer Films, many of which starred both of the actors. However, when Cushing arrived in Madrid to begin work on the picture, he was still distraught over the recent death of his wife, and announced to Gordon that he could not do the film. With Gordon desperate over the idea of losing one of his important stars, Lee stepped in and put Cushing at ease simply by talking to his old friend about some of their previous work together. Cushing changed his mind and stayed on.

Like all the Italian and Spanish films of the period, Horror Express was filmed mostly without sound, with effects and voices dubbed into the film later. Lee, Cushing and Savalas all provided their own voices for the English market.

@Brachiator: The Hammer movies have had great music. This one has an exit theme that would not be out of place in a Tarantino movie.

You can’t discuss the history of the civil rights movement without mentioning the n-word.

You can’t summarize the hatred of Jim Crow without…

You can’t define racism in America without referring to the n-word.

Discussing racism while opposing it and discussing the n-word in the context of how racists use it is NOT the same thing as using the n-word as an inflammatory racist slur. I’m sorry if people are offended by the use of the word historically… we have had some very hostile history in this world.

It is a good thing that we now have a proper attitude about calling people terrible things and using their race as a weapon against them. This is despicable behavior at any time, and I would never engage in racist hatred as many southerners have, racists have all over the place not just down south, I guess.

Some days all the news is bad. Sounds like the first line of a sad song…
