Can't make this up. Walter Palmer dental office morphed into makeshift memorial. Suppose #CecilTheLion in foreground pic.twitter.com/tW59sUuB3J

— Paul Blume (@PaulBlume_FOX9) July 28, 2015

More info on the human filth who killed that lion:

The incident is not Palmer’s first brush with authorities.

In 2008, he pleaded guilty in federal court in Wisconsin to misleading a federal agent in connection with the hunting of a black bear. Two years earlier, Palmer killed a bear near Phillips, in Price County. That location was 40 miles outside of the zone where he held a permit to hunt bear. Palmer and others transported the bear carcass to a registration station inside the allowed hunting zone, according to court documents, and at the station, he falsely certified that the bear had been killed in the legal zone.

Facing a maximum penalty of five years in prison, Palmer was sentenced to one year’s probation and fined nearly $3,000.

In the spring of 2003, Palmer also was convicted in Otter Tail County in western Minnesota and paid a small fine for fishing without a license, a misdemeanor.

And in 2009, Palmer agreed to a settlement with the Minnesota Board of Dentistry over allegations that he sexually harassed a receptionist. She alleged that Palmer made comments about her breasts, buttocks and genitalia.

Without admitting guilt, Palmer settled and paid $127,500 to the woman, who also was his patient. The settlement included references to his bear-hunting conviction and “substandard record keeping.”

A real charmer. He apparently has 43 big game kills, including another lion and an elephant.

There are a lot of things about myself that I’ve come to realize in the five years since I was diagnosed as autistic. One of them is that I can feel empathically connected to animals in a way that I just can’t with humans. I don’t know why that’s the case, but it’s true. So something like this is especially painful for me.

There was a hell of a lot of planning (i.e. detailed premeditation) and then a callous disregard by letting the wounded animal escape to die slowly and painfully. It is precisely and exactly like a serial killer torturing a victim. Human or animal, the guy is getting off on inflicting suffering, particularly since he used *bait* while bow-hunting, which completely negates any claim to being some kind of great (white) hunter. Serial killers also regard their targets as animals, besides, so there’s no distinction except for the particular target.

This blows apart all of his claims of ignorance that what they were doing was wrong, because he knew they were luring him out.

Unfortunately, I’ve read that the punishment for poaching is a $20,000 fine and that they don’t think they can give him jail time, though they’re trying to find something.

This guy was my friends’ family dentist. The wife was always curious why she never received his “special treatment.”

Lawyers offered competing explanations Monday of why a Woodland dentist allegedly touched the breasts of more than a dozen female patients during treatment.

Mark Anderson is accused of 20 counts of sexual battery, including 19 felony charges.

During closing arguments, defense lawyer Michael Rothschild told jurors that Anderson had massaged the patients’ chest muscles around their breasts in an effort to relieve pain and soreness caused by temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ.

“He was helping his patients … with the broadest scope of treatment he could possibly do,” Rothschild said

    .
Am truly grateful to have had a fantastic dentist for ages, my family now see him too and his son, equally nice, is taking over the practice. Would hate to have to go shopping for one at this point, but screening based on no dead animals on the wall seems like a reasonable start.

Here’s my take on it, since the human side of it’s been done to death, and I fully agree with the chorus at how rancid the whole canned-hunt industry is.

Lions are very interesting felids. They’ve long had a man-eating reputation, but are far less dangerous to humans then tigers. (Though rogue lions can do an amazing amount of damage, most lions aren’t rogues).

    Why is that?

Lions are social cats, pretty much the only social cat save for our pooties. If you get a lion used to being around people and keep them well fed, they can be very genial companions. The big risk with lions, even tame ones, is the Lenny Syndrome: “I had a little friend once, but he don’t move no more.” Lions not knowing their own strength, or that the funny looking furless lions are far more fragile, is by far the bigger risk then one deciding you’d go well with fava beans and a nice Chianti.

So what does all this have to do with this story? Socialized lions are ideal for canned hunts. Tigers, even tigers used to being around people, can be insanely dangerous – they’re solitary, and if they wake up grumpy, they might just decide today’s a great day for taking your head off. Can hunters aren’t looking for real danger. They’re looking for an animal they can walk up to and shoot, which is exactly what Dr. Safari did to poor Cecil.

There’s always a price to be paid for getting animals used to being around people. It makes them far more sympathetic, but far less ready to defend themselves.

I wonder if the establishment GOP will bring this up to connect it to Trump’s son being a small dick big game hunter. I know the GOP is dumb but I don’t see them making this guy a sympathetic guy. He might be able to get away with the lion killing but the other side will start with the other pictures and I don’t think a polar bear, a black bear, a leopard etc etc would go down well even with a lot of republicans.

Not sure that therapist was all that great.

Let me first say that there are plenty of highly professional and ethical dentists out there. Still, it is a profession that requires an advanced degree (they are doctors after all) but not that difficult of one, pays well but where your hours can be very flexible: you are usually your own boss very quickly.

Thus I would suspect that they are more likely to be libertarians.

Also the guy I went to last summer sent me home with some very weird libertarian book he had put out himself.

Meanwhile, male lions spend most of their time lying around looking majestic and maybe watching the kids while the womenfolk go out and kill stuff and bring it home for dinner.

I can’t help but conclude that lions are a far more highly evolved species than dentists.

Psychopathy is caused by brain injury or organic brain defect and there are other symptoms. The latter two are personality disorders basically caused by life. But it’s the level of sadism that is the precursor to that sort of cruelty. Probably all humans have it to some degree, but as this thread (and the Freep thread) shows, most people are disgusted at the thought of inflicting this sort of needless cruelty. And this guy had done it before. He knew.

Crappy practices have dentists who dump the “less complex” parts of procedures on the dental assistants, who are many times just some woman the dentist hired and trained himself. If someone is “cleaning” your teeth and it is not a licensed RDH, this is expressly illegal; you can sue and get the dentist in huge trouble.

My first job was with a winger who was into upselling and over-treating, and eventually got busted for it (I had quit long before this). His penalty? Having his license revoked for a month; I was completely disgusted. It was the insurance companies who busted him to the dental board.

I worked as a temp RDH for the last 6 years, and that means I worked in a LOT of different offices. Most dentists are conservative, some are wingers, and one (the creepiest and least sterile office I’ve been in) was a tea party loon. Most of them are smart enough to keep anything controversial out of any conversations, including bumper stickers, but this guys car was covered in them.

If you find a liberal or democratic dentist, tell you friends and support their practice! They guy I work for now will occasionally talk politics with patients he knows, and he has a really full practice with really loyal patients because (1) he doesn’t upsell anything and doesn’t push services, (2) he tells people the truth about what they need to plan for, and (3) he’s an actual human being who cares about more than money. His staff loves him for it.

@Another Holocene Human: That’s probably right. If Zimbabwe actually attempts to have a U.S. citizen extradited, the immediate response (regardless what actually occurs in response) will be that Obama’s bending over backward to accommodate lesser countries and this would never happen with any other president in the history of the great goshdarned US of A. A real president would withhold aid and tell Zimbabwe to fuck off on live TV, probably calling it Rhodesia on purpose just to cheese them off even more. The idea that “rule of law” extends not only to a rich, white guy, but outside our own borders (and not just in the UK at that!), and isn’t negated by American Exceptionalism applied at the individual level to every U.S. citizen anywhere anytime, is a foreign (no pun intended) concept to some.

Plus, it’s just an easy Fauxtrage dumping target and excuse to blame something on Obama.

The only excuse they need is that it’s a day ending with the letter “y.”

Mine, he’s a good guy. If you’re in the DC area give him a call. Great guy, loves his staff, takes great care of them. It’s a family practice, his father is still there. They treat you right, prices can be steep for some things, but he really tries to stop problems before it reaches that point. Most of the staff has been there, shit for over the decade since I started there, turn over is unheard of there. He treats and pays his people very, very, very, very well. Which makes sense, Rosslyn is Georgetown level expensive, studios selling for over a million bucks happens here. 300k-400k is about the normal.

He’s of the mindset that if he can’t pay his people enough to live close to work, he’s failing as the leader of this mess. He’ll also negotiate the rate if you can’t pay, he gets that some of his customers are workers at Whole Foods or CVS, he’ll cut out his take and give you time to pay. Plus he’s gay and minority friendly.

He does fish though. The family goes on deep sea trips for sword fish and sharks, but they fish and release! Unless it’s something they wanted to eat (ie small fish). But they release all sharks and other top items.

    Great practice all around!
