I have to admit, Samantha Bee wasn’t really on my radar. But this…this is gold. Absolutely NSFW.

I’ll watch Samantha in a minute, but I came here to share this “Donald Trump Says ‘China’ ” video. It is a work of art.
SiubhanDuinne, Annoying Scoundrel
@SiubhanDuinne, Annoying Scoundrel:
Oh, and would be good if I included the link, I guess.
gogol's wife
She is brilliant.
OzarkHillbilly
Yep.
SiubhanDuinne, Annoying Scoundrel
I only vaguely know Samantha Bee, but that was good.
EDIT: Now go watch “Trump says ‘China’.”
Joy in FL
That was great.
Betty Cracker
I love Samantha Bee and was hoping she’d get Stewart’s gig when he left TDS. Apparently it was offered to her and she said no.
Amir Khalid
That clip from the Republican debate — dear God, they really are behaving like spoiled children. I thought you guys were kidding.
oldster
Damn, she’s good. That was really, really funny.
SiubhanDuinne, Annoying Scoundrel
@Amir Khalid:
We never kid.
gogol's wife
@SiubhanDuinne, Annoying Scoundrel:
I watched it, it’s funny, but I prefer the ones where he has Peter Serafinowicz’s voice (Cockney and posh).
OzarkHillbilly
@SiubhanDuinne, Annoying Scoundrel: Speak for yourself. Life is too short to take serious.
Betty Cracker
@Amir Khalid: I’ve never enjoyed a GOP debate more. It was an absolute train wreck.

OT: I heard Deray McKesson on the radio yesterday, interviewed in context of his being a candidate for Mayor of Baltimore. He doesn’t have a lot of detail for his plans, and it’s only 2 months until the primary. I think I’m going to go for Nick Mosby, and hope he and his wife don’t pad the city payroll with every relative they ever had.
Edit: I know she doesn’t work for the city, but for the state, but I also remember the Conaways. Heck, the worst of them still represents me in the House of Delegates.
schrodinger's cat
@gogol’s wife: Since when is Cockney, posh? BTW how was Downton, I missed this Sunday’s show because we had guests.
AnonPhenom
McConnell statement was a declaration of a Cold Civil War.
In essence he has publicly announced that the Republicans are refusing to participate in government with Democrats.
schrodinger's cat
@AnonPhenom: The Republicans declared war against the Obama Presidency since the day he was elected. This is not a new development.
MomSense
@Amir Khalid:
I actually fell asleep right after the quip from Trump about Babs running instead of JEB?, but my 12 year old watched the whole thing and was belly laughing in the retelling. When even the pre-teens get the joke, it really is silly season.
Amir Khalid
@gogol’s wife:
Cockney is a working-class London accent. (Incidentally, Peter Jackson had the Orcs in The Lord Of The Rings speak with a Cockney accent.) Posh English people sound like Eddie Redmayne.
Xantar
@Cheap Jim, formerly Cheap Jim:
Are you talking about Frank Conaway? I used to be represented by him when I lived in Mt. Vernon. I just moved to Patterson Park now, but sadly that means I’m no longer represented by Cummings in Congress.
WarMunchkin
@AnonPhenom: ? This isn’t anything new or unique. Anyway, it’s a given that they’ll block until the election. What I’m more interested in is what happens after the election. A Democratic President and a Democratic Senate – why wouldn’t they just filibuster the supreme court nominee then as well? It’s a politically beneficial strategy for Republicans to do so.
schrodinger's cat
@Amir Khalid: In the United States any Brit accent is a posh accent, that what gogol’s wife perhaps meant.
AnonPhenom
@schrodinger’s cat:
I repeat, PUBLICLY. DECLARED.
Spare us The Church of The Savy stuff.
Xantar
By the way, has anybody tried visiting http://www.JEBBush.com recently?
Denali
@schrodinger’s cat,
Actually I thought, except for the always dependable Maggie Smith, the episode was rather lame. Perhaps because there are only a 2 or 3 episodes remaining and it becomes necessary to tie up all loose ends. The NY Times does a hilarious recap on Monday.
Cheap Jim, formerly Cheap Jim
@Xantar: I mean the son, Frank jr. The old man passed last year. Frank, jr. is also known as the author of “Baptist Gnostic Christian Eubonic Kundalinion Spiritual Ki Do Hermeneutic Metaphysics: The Word: Hermeneutics”, and frankly, I think he may be too spiritual to be in the legislature.

@MomSense:
I still plan to watch the whole Republican debate circus but it would be fun to see a shorter video featuring the the worst Jerry Springer moments.
Benw
The Republicans hate Obama and are SO MAD that he’s getting a third appointment. It’s lovely.
I think if they’d had more time to react they’d have tried to prop Scalia’s body up Weekend At Bernie’s style for the next year.
TaMara (BHF)
@Xantar: Burn.
SiubhanDuinne, Annoying Scoundrel
@gogol’s wife:
Yes, those were great. There’s also one that’s “your drunk next-door neighbor” lip-syncing to Trump’s actual words/voice, which is perfection.
SiubhanDuinne, Annoying Scoundrel
@schrodinger’s cat:
Two separate dubs. The posh one is better than the cockney one, but they’re both good.
SiubhanDuinne, Annoying Scoundrel
@schrodinger’s cat:
This is true, but for a long time they tried to keep it, if not a secret, at least among themselves. Now they aren’t even pretending to look for for plausible deniability.

The Phoenix Coyotes had to dress a bank manager as their backup goalie in last night’s game.
Punchy
Thought her show would be a shit mock-up of TDS, and had no desire to watch. But I turned it on by mistake, watched 30 secs, and was hooked. She’s brilliant. She’s dailed back her somewhat over-the-top’ness from TDS and now has a great delivery and subtle wit.
She’s the female John Oliver.
SiubhanDuinne, Annoying Scoundrel
@Amir Khalid:
They are two separate videos. In one, Trump talks with a posh accent. In the other, he talks with a cockney accent.
Unabogie
@SiubhanDuinne, Annoying Scoundrel: Good lord, that’s a lot of China!
WarMunchkin
@Punchy: wat. She’s so not that. She’s just Samantha Bee, not a female male.
Corner Stone
@Amir Khalid: IT WAS FUCKING GLORIOUS!!
Xantar
@Cheap Jim, formerly Cheap Jim:
Yeah, that’s who I was talking about. And…spiritual is one way to describe him, I guess. I actually saw him at a community event and was really tempted to ask him to translate some hieroglyphics for me, but I chickened out.
J.
Can we all just refer to Donald Trump as “Creamsicle” now? :-)
MattF
@SiubhanDuinne, Annoying Scoundrel: Speaking of Der Trump… Did you know that the original name of the planet Uranus was ‘George’? Yes, really.
SiubhanDuinne, Annoying Scoundrel
@Unabogie:
Reminds me a bit of a thing I saw a few weeks ago, The Wizard of Oz in alphabetical order.
SiubhanDuinne, Annoying Scoundrel
@MattF:
I had no idea. Fascinating!
OzarkHillbilly
@MattF: The things I learn here.
Grumpy Code Monkey
Please God (that I don’t believe in), let Trump take SC by at least 40%, and have Jeb come in fourth or fifth with single digits (especially now that the punditry is convinced, convinced that Trump shot himself in the foot by attacking W’s Mesopotamian Misadventure). Force the GOP to stare into the abyss and decide what really matters to them. Make the Beltway pundits realize that they’ve been misreading the Republican base for decades.
I now want Trump to win the GOP nomination by a signifcant margin. I want him to win big in SC and carry that into the rest of the South (barring Texas, which will go for Cruz). I want it to be made clear that the people want a loudmouth uncouth real estate developer to be their President. And while I will vote for Clinton in the primary, the “burn-the-fucker-down” part of my personality wants Sanders to win, because Trump vs. Sanders is the last step before the pitchforks and torches come out.
Tom Q
Both Samantha Bee shows so far have been laugh-out-loud funny. If she can keep it up, she’ll have one of the best political satire shows going.
And she has an advantage, coming on at 10:30 Monday — she gets first crack at whatever happened over the weekend, which for the past two weeks have included the Rubio robot act and Scalia’s passing.
OzarkHillbilly
@Grumpy Code Monkey:
I wouldn’t be too sure of that. If there is one thing Texans can’t stand, it is the stench of a Loser ™ and the way things are shaping up…
Mai.naem.mobile
I think the next time a deep red state has an emergency and wants FEMA $$$ and an emergency declaration,Obama should just go golfing and tell the GOP that he’s not doing anything because the GOP doesn’t want him using his presidential powers in Year 4.

@Betty Cracker:
Love Samantha Bee, a very smart woman that made a very smart decision. You don’t want to be the person to follow someone like Jon Stewart, you want to be the one after the immediate replacement. I don’t have any information on this, but I think John Oliver (who I wanted to see take the reins) made the same smart decision.

@Punchy: The bit she did on TDS on undecided voters in 2008 was absolutely hilarious (How do you get dressed in the morning?). I’ve loved her ever since then.
Roger Moore
@WarMunchkin:
I expect the filibuster to be gone for all appointments if either party controls both the presidency and the senate. They already did it for appointments other than the Supreme Court, so I don’t think they’ll have too much trouble doing it for the Supreme Court now that there’s a vacancy.
amk
Sam B and Wyatt Cenac are my favs of TDS. Didn’t care much about jon stewart given his both sides do it ism bs and his disrespect towards the kenyan while he kissed the asses of the morons like bill o’racist.
I wish her show the best.

Not quite Bollywood, but here are a few photographs of some of India’s royal women examples from 1891 to at least the 60s.

@Amir Khalid: Dr. Tolkien had the orcs speaking in what I would think would have been a cockney or cockneyish accent. Of course those were written words…

I was not quite a fan of Bee on The Daily Show — thought she veered too far into improv/over the top territory for my tastes, but she seems a lot better in her own format. Just for historical reference, I didn’t think I’d go for the Colbert Report at all, but then the White House Correspondant’s dinner happened and the rest is history.
smintheus
I just chewed out one of Pat Toomey’s twits in DC. His line, which he seemed to think was clever, was that it’s not a rejection of Toomey’s senatorial advice and consent duty because Toomey has now given the president his advice – not to try to nominate anybody at all.
He also tried to blame this impasse on Democrats of course.

@Paul in KY: Lord of the Rings: white people, RP, good. Dark people, working class accents, evil.

@schrodinger’s cat, @Amir Khalid:
What SiubhanDuinne said. There are two separate Trump dubs, one Cockney and one posh. Shame on you both for thinking that literate commenter Gogol’s Wife would conflate the two.

@MattF:
Considering George HW Bush, George W Bush, & George Will, it’s not a major schlep to YourAnus–the resemblance is uncanny. (“Do you have a match?” “I’ve got a match: Your face & my arse…”)
What pisseth me off even more than Pluto’s relegation from the First Division of Planethood is that the shit4brains IAU never even considered naming one of its 5 moons Goofy. (Hell, they coulda spelt it Gufi for all I care–it’s the frackin’ thought that counts, uh-hyuk, uh-hyuk, uh-hyuk)

@Punchy:
This, but there are differences (one being Oliver has a little more content freedom on HBO). I like her show after 2 viewings.
Both shows remind me of The Wil Wheaton Project that ran briefly on Syfy though his focus was on sci-fi & gaming culture. Which I guess was like Soup but I don’t watch that.

Every time I see a clip from that debate, I notice another detail — a funny face, how someone is standing, a quick comeback — that flew by me the first time. My appreciation for exactly how horrifying and inane the whole thing was deepens.
Like a great work of art, it calls for multiple viewings.

@Mike J: In the books, it’s not quite so blatant. That accent can also mean ‘uneducated’ and your average orc was quite uneducated. The Gaffer, as nice a hobbit as you would meet, spoke the same basic way (without the cursing).
Certainly, in the Silmarillion, there are numerous examples of the beautiful people doing very bad/stupid things.

I’ve only seen the first episode of Full Frontal, but it was as good as the Daily Show in its prime, although it is a somewhat different show. Definitely a must watch.
Grumpy Code Monkey
@OzarkHillbilly:
That’s not unique to Texans; it’s just that these are the people who put Cruz in the Senate in the first place, and I don’t expect them to abandon their boy.
Granted, that could change; FL’s pretty much told Jeb to fuck off and die, and Rubio’s still well behind Trump. Based on how SC goes, Cruz may not be the lock I think he is. But, I’m not expecting him to lose TX.
Of course, all that really matters to me right now is that Bush is beaten into a soft, paste-like substance. If I can’t have everything, I at least want that. I want that sonofabitch humiliated. I want him loathed. I want him to come out of this process so damaged that he could never run for political office again. I want RtR to empty out all those Brinks trucks and have it all come for naught. I want the Bush family locked out of politics for at least three generations.
No, I am not a good person for wanting this, but Bush ain’t no damned good either, so it all evens out.

I have to say, when I learned Fat Tony was dead, I was nearly overjoyed. And I also hope that ?Jeb? is the total loser in all these primaries that we are all on edge hoping for. Millions and millions of dollars from all his rich friends, wasted, pissed away for nothing!
I don’t like or respect Trump, but he makes all the other Republicans look like the loons they are. Of course, if he is running for the Presidency on the Republican ticket, I’ll be working hard for whoever is running against him.
But I do hope Trump continues to hold the Republicans up for the disrespect they have so richly earned.
And the remark above about McConnell starting a Cold Civil War is very apt. He is breaking his oath of office by not undertaking to perform his Constitutional duties. He is showing his lack of respect for the Union of states that is America.
satby
@efgoldman: My deepest condolences to you, your wife, and all your family, efg. This is a tragedy that didn’t have to happen.
I’m the daughter of a homicide cop who died at 54 from the stress of going to too many scenes like that. He believed as you do that there was no reason for a gun in the house for most people. Decades of picking up dead children and adults after a gun went off does that to people.
No One You Know
@Mai.naem.mobile: It’s what they deserve, but it’s not what he’ll do; he’s never forgotten that he’s the president of the Union, not just of the states that approved him. Something I can’t say about the Republican congress, in letter or in spirit.
No One You Know
@efgoldman: Speechless…But the medium demands words.
In the name of all deities, may peace come to you, kindness appear all around you, and the love she inspired for you and all your family strengthen you and comfort.
I am so sad to hear of your loss.
