Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

I really should read my own blog.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

You cannot shame the shameless.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

    Thurston is deceptively adorable.

We were out of town overnight because we drove to the Quad Cities for a big John Deere award ceremony at which Mr IOL was made a John Deere Innovation Fellow. This is a big deal and I couldn’t be prouder of him.

@Iowa Old Lady: The big question is how is that going to influence Mr. IOL and direct how he does things. Will John Deere get quid pro quo? What do they want him to do. Corruption is everywhere.

Kidding aside, that is a big deal and congratulations to Mr. IOL. And I am sure he could not have achieved what he has without you by his side.

Speaking of doggies, a moment of remembrance for Maggie, possibly the world’s oldest at thirty years.

An Australian kelpie called Maggie has passed away this week, and her owner thinks she may just be the world’s oldest dog. Maggie had lived on Brian McLaren’s dairy farm in Woolsthorpe, southern Victoria, since she was just eight weeks old.

“We got her when she was only a little pup. We believe she was pretty close to 30 years old, if not she was at least 29-and-a-half,” Mr McLaren said.

According to the Guinness World Records, the oldest age recorded for a dog is 29 years and five months — for another Australian working dog named Bluey. The McLaren family brought Maggie home before their son, who is now 34, had started attending school.

…Mr McLaren said Maggie passed away peacefully, curled up in her bed, on Sunday night.

“The best thing about it is the last couple of weeks I was petrified I was going to have to put her down, and that was going to break my heart,” he said. “I’m so pleased she went the way she went.”

Aw shucks, that’s heart-rending, Maggie sounds like the perfect dog. And yes, I had to look up kelpie.

@japa21: Deere pays Mr IOL’s salary, so they already get to tell him what to do.

However, at their behest, he’s spent his professional life doing R&D to reduce emissions and increase fuel economy in diesel engines. At our house, every time EPA issues a new regulation on off-highway equipment, we call it “Job security.”

    ? ♫♩Shameless self-promotion ♩♫ new chapter!

Pearly ended her call and put her phone back into her pocket, unfocused her eyes for a bit, and took in the Bay.

A bank of fog was blasting over the coastal range at Twin Peaks. It had already swallowed the bottom half of Sutro Tower, giving the impression of a stenopus hispidus—that’s one of those red-and-white striped shrimp, for the non-scientists—hidden just below the cloud cover. It crouched over the city, cleaning the detritus and parasites off the landscape, its tail stuck in the air to catch the attention of passing fish, and… well, the metaphor sort of fell apart with the fish thing, for a few reasons, but mostly because there weren’t any fish that big. Or, you know, the other big issue involving fish at the moment.

The poor shrimp would be lonely, too. S. hispidus is, unlike most of the residents of San Francisco, monogamous, and there was only one in sight. Perhaps some day they would build another pointless radio tower and finally give it a companion.

Farewell to the Maggie, possibly the world’s oldest pooch.

“When the kids were growing up they’d get off the bus at 4:10pm and if they weren’t, she’d be there barking at 4:15,” Mr McLaren said.

Maggie worked on the farm rounding up cows until about 12 years ago.

“She wasn’t pampered but she was well looked after. She always had milk — not too much of it, but she loved her milk — and anything else she’d wanted,” Mr McLaren said. “She loved chasing the motorbike. When she was up and going she would want to run along beside it, so the faster you went, the quicker she would run. She had the greatest life.”

Farewell to the Maggie, possibly the world’s oldest pooch.

An Australian kelpie called Maggie has passed away this week, and her owner thinks she may just be the world’s oldest dog. Maggie had lived on Brian MacLaren’s dairy farm in Woolsthorpe, southern Victoria, since she was just eight weeks old.

    Walkies!!!! Happy pups.

You know what has been frying my ass of late? I am sick of the clickbait that I see so many places regarding this election.

Example: Huffington Post. God I am loathing this site lately. All too often there will be a headline that doesn’t match an article and really all they seem to want is to generate a fight between Republicans over Trump/Cruz or Democrats over Bernie/Hillary. It’s become apparent they only care about clicks and they would happily sink this country just to get more. I can’t tell which posts are real & which are trolls just to get people to throw shit at each other. Really I was never fond of HuffPo but they suck worse than ever now.

HARRIET TUBMAN ON THE $20 IS, OFFICIALLY, THE BLACKEST THING THAT WILL EVER HAPPENK

    Damon Young, 4/20/16

I was going to create of a list of things Blacker than the face of Harriet Tubman — perhaps the fiercest and baddest person to ever plant a foot on American soil — replacing Andrew Jackson’s on the 20.

    …………………………………………

But I decided not to. Because nothing I could possibly cite or conjure would be Blacker than this woman — this American who lived as a fearless, relentless, and unambiguous challenge of America; her very existence both an indictment of our nation and the fullest and beautifulest paean to the kidnapped Africans living within it — existing on our currency. The same currency she could have been purchased for 170 years ago. The Blackness scale has officially been broken. Obliterated. Decimated.

And all I know is that I will never break a 20 dollar bill again.

@Roger Moore: He has on occasion tried to power them with some pretty bizarre stuff, since alternate fuels are in his wheelhouse too. I’ll point out the unicorn possibilities

@April: Someone else told me that too. It never occurred to me which may say something about our marriage.

Cops going to prison for killing unarmed people. Not for long enough, but it’s a start.

    The shootings happened in 2005.

    @Mike J: Yeah.

The officers on New Orleans’ Danziger Bridge that day in 2005 were sentenced back in 2011 to decades in prison. But earlier this year, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals allowed their guilty verdicts to be overturned, paving the way for a new trial on the basis that federal prosecutors anonymously commented on stories about the case online.

On Wednesday, the former officers struck a deal with prosecutors that allowed them to plead guilty to lesser charges and significantly reduce their time behind bars. U.S. District Judge Kurt Engelhardt ruled in favor of the deal’s terms, sentencing defendants to 3 to 12 years.

(shakes head) Even when prosecutors do their job, they fvck it up. It’s enuf to make one wonder, “Are they doing this on purpose?”

@Mike J: The moral arc is long indeed.

At the doc’s for the first of two appointments. Second will be more entertaining than the first. Time for more cybernetic hardware.

I will be in Seattle next month but probably no time for a meet-up. June I will be back for more medical stuff and will have more time.

A friend whose dear cat had to be euthanized this week alerted me to a service available in some areas including mine. I would definitely have used it when my sweet Snarla’s health deteriorated beyond comfort as taking her for that last vet appointment was really hard. http://www.lapoflove.com/Services/In-Home-Euthanasia

@FlyingToaster (Tablet): I’ll go literally quite spare if I have to rest that long. No. I can only not workout maybe a few days. Blech. Bodies are bizarre. I’m doing bellydance, Zumba, kickboxing, heavy weightlifting and flamenco. I hurt my ankle tendons walking for hours in super flat shoes working a conference. I’ve done less damage roundhouse kicking into the kickbag base. /grump
