Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

The revolution will be supervised.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

We will not go back.

CNN tells us in advance that the bar will be dropped to floor for Trump during debates:https://t.co/j3QPH2c2ln pic.twitter.com/ZEbXngpq9b

Keep in mind: These tweets are from actual, working journalists! So why is the cable-media “news” so determined to promote Trump’s “winning tactics”? Is it just C.R.E.A.M. — because the Repubs have worked the refs so effectively that the producers/editors assume advertisers “want” Idiocracy-level spectacles?

Best odds are that Trump will be judged on his ability to stand on stage like an adult, not his actual answers. https://t.co/CIei6oybTy

After growing up in a newsroom/printing plant, and then living for 40 years with a correspondent with The AP, and seeing real journalism being committed, these bozos are a pretty sad lot of fail.

Mrs J used to get msgs on her answering machine with death threats, from dirty cops she wrote about. One was so bad she took it to the judge, who listened in silence and issued a concealed carry permit the moment it was over. I just carried open. We both did until they got the cop put away, where he still is I think. This was quite a while ago.

I think a serious death threat would send Brooks to a remote hospital, or MoDo, or any of the CNN domestic staff. Some of the war correspondents would probably blow it off.

These bozos don’t even want to risk harsh words from a political candidate who plans either genocide or ethnic cleansing, which are both war crimes, straight from the Balkans and ISIL.

A real shame if they destroy democracy over their failure to learn real reportage. Mrs J could teach them a thing of two, except she’s a woman, and they can’t learn a dammed thing from a girl.

    Is it

Yes to everything, and more besides. All of the motivations that Beltway journalists have line up in the same direction: Let Republicans get away with bullshit, especially racist bullshit. Superficial ideas about what drives ratings do not have to compete with what the company owners want, laziness, ego, or the political inclinations of the reporters themselves. It all goes the same way.

I want the journos to ask Trump for proof that he’s being audited. I think it’s a perfectly fair question. I wouldn’t be surprised if Trump is not being audited. I doubt with the limited resources the IRS has, that he gets audited every year. Even with rich people taking advantage of the tax system I don’t see the IRS auditing them every single year. They’re going to spread around.

@Mai.naem.mobile: Warning Politico (from February 26):

IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said Friday that it would be unlikely for a taxpayer to be audited for multiple years in a row, a day after Donald Trump maintained the agency had audited him a dozen years running.

Koskinen, in an interview with C-SPAN’s “Newsmakers,” stressed repeatedly that he couldn’t comment directly on Trump’s personal tax situation. But the IRS chief also strongly suggested that the scenario Trump laid out in Thursday’s GOP debate was improbable.

“It would be rare for anyone to be audited every year,” Koskinen said in the interview, which will air Sunday. If there were no issues following an audit, Koskinen added, “it’s a number of years — two or three at least — before you hear from us again.”

Of course, the Teabaggers are trying to impeach the IRS commissioner so Trump is probably innocent and telling the truth (in Bizarro World).

If the moderator isn’t supposed to call out the lies, who is? Who else is there to give voters real-time feedback when a candidate is peddling a whopper? Romney flat-out lied (okay, it was a petty Republican hobby horse talking point, but it was still a lie), and Candy Crowley called him on it right on stage. Romney’s reaction to being told he was incorrect – by a woman – gave voters some invaluable information about candidate Romney and how he might act as President Romney. This was information that wasn’t likely to get to voters in any other way.

By pre-emptively telling the candidates he’s not going to stop them when they lie, Wallace is giving them free rein to say whatever the hell they want. Anyone want to give their estimate on who’s the more accomplished liar between Trump and Clinton? Who’s going to benefit from Wallace’s “facts off” policy?

It’s up to the voters to decide, silly. It’s the next step down the road of he said she said reporting. Facts are not the most important thing, it’s feelings the count the most. Voters feel he’s more truthful, and it’s Clintons job to fix that impression, not theirs. So unless Clinton lies then it’s not their job to challenge the candidates, let them hash it out between themselves.

This is depressing. I’ve been coming down on wingnuts I come across on Facebook and other such exotic spots for their delusion (to my mind, at least) that Clinton has no shot at all, and that Trump is going to run away with this thing. I’ve been telling them that they’re bound to have as bad a night in November as they had four years ago. Now, after reading about the execrable way the press has been writing about Clinton and Trump, I’m beginning to wonder if I’m the one who’s delusional. I keep thinking that sooner or later, the press will wake the fuck up and do its job and begin treating Trump like the shitbag that he is. But I don’t know any longer. It freaks me the fuck out that we could end up with this guy running the country. I thought we’d seen the worst with Bush, but this might make me wish for the good old days, when Republicans were grown ups. You know, the Bush-Cheney years…

Sam Wang’s Princeton Election Consortium, pretty much the only (meta-)polling outfit you need to follow, currently has Clinton at 339 electoral votes, Trump at 199. They even have an editable map where you can jack it all night long trying to figure out how Trump gets to 270. Good luck with that.

Wallace is, which I’m sure is the reason he’s doing it. Calling out any of the nonstop lying from Trump would turn his regular audience into a lynch mob.

Trump will also benefit hugely, though I suspect the Clinton camp are assuming his debate performance is going to be one long Gish Gallop, and are doing their best to prepare for it. Hopefully by baiting him into saying offensive things and stuff that’s really obviously pulled out of his ass (to anyone who isn’t already a committed Trumpster.) Not sure what you’re talking about, re: her campaign being out there. I don’t give a shit about the bullshit “Waah! She won’t give any press conferences! Waaah!” crap, but with the exception of her so-called “alt-right” speech, there ain’t a lot of news on the Clinton front. When Trump was on the ropes, due to his own assholery, she (or her surrogates) should have been hammering on him every day, on four or five subjects (one per day, rotate frequently). Instead we get Obama saying something a week or so ago, Harry Reid saying something one time, and so on. Yes, I know about ground games, but her camp needs to portray him as the stupid, lying, racist, misogynistic fuckhead that he is.

Her number on 538 have plummeted since early August, PEC is starting to show more weakness, and so on. (And let’s not get into a “Nate Silver sucks as much as Kos” screed — not saying that it’s you, just that I recall similar here.) Yes, I know everybody is still calling it for her in a walk. Much better for the country if she assumes she’s losing — not necessarily talking that way, but having her surrogates take no prisoners.

The MSM can’t be counted on to be even-handed, nor to investigate Trump’s corruption thoroughly, so her campaign has to do their work for them. She has the money to fund a shitload of oppo — not that it isn’t already out there to be commented on.

And, because I’m on a rant-roll — where THE FUCK is that sanctimonious prick from Vermont? I expect to see his miserable face on the news EVERY FUCKING DAY, talking about how Trump will destroy everything Bernie was working toward, and Hillary will try to get a lot of Bernie’s proposals implemented — which is probably more true than any BernOrBusters are willing to accept.

    MOTHERFUCKER.

OK, I took a breath, I’ll calm down. I just hope Hillary starts putting a hurt on Deadbeat Donnie real soon, because if she waits until October, it may be too late. And, yes, I know I worry more than 90 percent of the commenters here. I’ll try to maintain better.

    10. What would keep me up late at night if I were Trump?

As the polls have ebbed and flowed, I’ve been 8 or 10 points behind Clinton at my worst moments, but only tied with her at my best moments. I’ve also never gotten much above 40 percent in national polls, at least not on a consistent basis, and I’ve alienated a lot of voters who would allow me to climb higher than that. In other words, maybe that dreaded Trump ceiling is there after all, in which case I’ll have to get awfully lucky to win the election, probably needing both a favorable flow of news in the weeks leading up to Nov. 8 and a large third-party vote that works against Clinton.

At this point, I get less annoyed and more bawling with laughter. Its funny, we have people who credit President Obama’s stellar campaigns, yet forget when even he had dejected progressives jumping on his campaign to do the same things there now demanding Hills camp to do.

Look, if you want to worry to death, its your prerogative. The media will be the media, as they were in 2008 and 2012. Its why even liberals gave Romney the first debate, though they cannot tell me why Romney won it like what did he say? But, its progressives being what they always are, shaky liberals who call themselves “progressive” because they are too punk assed to actually fight back against conservatives making it a bad word. So by “avoiding drawn into personal clashes” sounds like CNN is praying for some reality TV show screaming match from Trump. Keep in mind CNN doesn’t give a shit about reporting, it’s all entertainment to them,.

@GOVCHRIS1988: Yes, this. Good lord. Some of you need to get a hold of yourself. The MSM is about infotainment – it’s very simple; Trump is exciting Hilary is boring, so the MSM wants as much Trump as possible. If anything the MSM is pissed at the new “serious” Trump because it’s not as flashy was they want. I still find it hard to belive people are going to vote that circus clown in, I mean no conservative ever seriously accused GW Bush of being a crook like Trump has and I don’t see the Trump love from the right like McCain or Romny had in their elections.
