hey folks cheer up – it’s almost 4pm before a 3-day weekend – time for a big ol’ heap of BREAKING NEWS for Trumpov to stew over on his way back to the U.S. this weekend!! Let’s have it, IC!!

I watched Gianforte’s apology at The Guardian and have to (grudgingly) admit to surprise. Unlike virtually every R one I’ve heard over the last few years he actually said (paraphrasing) I’m sorry, I made a mistake and I take responsibility for it. He’s still an asshole but credit where credit is due.
Uncle Ebeneezer
So I got harassed by a 45-supporter yesterday. It was one of my first encounters with one in the wild.
I was at a Civilian Oversight Committee for police reform and there were a half-dozen of these loudmouths creating a scene, being loud, holding up “LIE” signs etc., when people got up to speak about the need for no interaction between the Sheriffs and ICE. They were being disruptive to the point that a couple of the Board members complained, told them to quiet down etc. Their leader got up and made this really disgusting speech about the threat of Ilegal Aliens and people booed, shook our heads and I even gave him the finger (both actually.) Anyways, when we were on break he came over and was shoving his phone camera in my face and yammering at me. I knew his name so I wrote “___ is a RACIST BIGOT!” on my notepad and held it up and pointed to it. He demanded I explain, but of course wouldn’t even let me get in a word. I basically told him it wasn’t my job to educate him and that he should go read some books or Google “Are Trump voters racist?” It was so annoying because in addition to being unsettling and making me a little nervous (though not too bad), I was actually in the middle of a conversation with some other activists at the time. Anyways if anyone has a good tactic for dealing with that sort of nuisance in a public setting, let me know. I feel like I held my own as much as you can when you basically have Alex Jones yelling at you. What colossal douche-bags these people are….
Smedley Darlington Prunebanks (Formerly Mumphrey, et al.)
I hate everything today, too. Seeing violent asshole Gianforte win a house seat just pisses me off. That one of our good friends was almost killed in a car wreck two nights ago doesn’t help. I’m here with her in the hospital, and she’ll be all right, though she has a broken hip and a lot of cuts and bruises. Dude in a pickup truck swerved into her lane and hit her head on. Also, it’s my father’s 101st birthday today, but he’s missed every birthday for the last 10 years. I’d give anything to talk to him for a day and hear what he’d have to say about this shit show fail parade.
Elizabelle
Apparently Hillary had a coughing fit during her commencement address at Wellesley. It’s all they can talk about in the first paragraphs of this NY Daily News story. And yet … writer does get around to her very clear points, about halfway through.
Hillary Clinton endures coughing fit during commencement speech at alma mater Wellesley
Watch the speech yourself here. Here’s link to video: PBS.
And then — fresh headline on the NY Daily story:
Hillary Clinton hints at Trump impeachment as she invokes Nixon in Wellesley College commencement speech
Haven’t read either NYDN story in full. But skimmed …. now to watch/listen to the whole speech. On my second glass of red wine, and Hillary is up NOW.
? Martin
@realbtl: Easy to apologize after the consequences are off the table. Where was that apology yesterday? Now he’s just trying to get the judge to let him off easy so he can take his place in Congress.
Elizabelle
@Smedley Darlington Prunebanks (Formerly Mumphrey, et al.): Hugs. Lots on your plate. Wishing your pal a complete recovery.
RE your dad: yeah. I think of my dad about every/every other day, and always wish he could be here for another conversation.
Although: I am glad that neither my dad, my mom, nor a lot of loved ones have to live through Trump as president. Better not to know.
Not their faults, but we got the worst president in over 100 years. He’s cruising past Harding (who had the grace to die in office), and has tanked US credibility in less than 130 days.

@Jeffro: I don’t blame Soundgarden for wanting to be off the road for the forseeable future.
Do you see them returning without Chris Cornell? I think he was Soundgarden.
And it sounds like he got into something pharmaceutical, or street drug use, and I absolutely doubt he ever intended to take his life. He loved his family. I think it was a break from reality impulse. Truly a loss.
Read a TMZ item, and his wife was frightened by his slurring and not making sense, hung up with him, and sent the bodyguard to his room. Although 30 crucial minutes were wasted, because hotel security would not grant access to Cornell’s room. They got there too late.
I bet Vicki would have stayed on the phone with Chris, if she had anything to do over again. Sounds like he just snapped.

So I solved my Chromebook dilemma with an impulse buy — I played with the small (10″) Asus Flip at Best Buy and liked it enough to buy one since it was payday and it’s getting close to my birthday.
My vision for this machine is that it’s going to be my writing machine, with only my author stuff on it. We’ll see if I can stick to that. It has a mere 10GB of on-board memory available, so that should keep me from going too nuts with distractions. And I still have 10 days to return it.

I’m just seething as my leader is blaming me for not finding audio problems with a file, provided by a vendor I said months ago was not providing quality product. This is allergy season. Doesn’t Hillary often have coughing fits when her allergies act up? It happens to a lot of people in April and May. You’d think the media could find something else to headline, such as, oh, maybe, the fucking substance of her address.

I am only hating about 50% of people and things today which is pretty good! Cancer update coming so skip if not interested….
Mrs. Imm. Went for her first oncologist meeting since starting chemo. She had her second PET scan Wednesday and, as ever with this disease, there was good and bad news. The bad news is that more lymph nodes and other tissue were involved than the Doc previously let on, including a lot more lymph nodes away from the tumor.
The good news — and it is good in a relative sense, I understand, is that the chemo is doing its job. A significant number of remote sites have been stopped, some even resolved! Her tumor has shrunk enough that it is no longer pressing full time on the nerve cluster that was causing all her pain. So, three more cycles (9 weeks) of chemo and then another scan. She actually might be able to achieve remission.
One steels one’s self for the worst news but there is no protection for good news. When we got this report, I wept.
SiubhanDuinne
@MoxieM:
Can’t speak for Elizabelle, but I most certainly plan to watch the HRC address in its entirety later this evening (and no, I didn’t attend any of the Seven Sisters). It’s true that most commencement speeches are forgettable in the extreme, but each year there’s a handful of really powerful, timely, and memorable addresses. From the couple of sentences I heard earlier today, Hillary’s is among them.

Good for her for reaching out again to Manchester and use her celebrity for the benefit of the victims and their families.

So when do the tweets start, as soon as the plane takes off, or when he gets back to DC. Obama’s lovefest with Merkel, Hillary’s beatdown at Wellsley, the Golden Child’s husband under assault, the terrible reviews in Europe and at home, getting lectured by May, not enough sleep, it’s going be a big ugly explosion. The WH must be praying that he focuses his ire on Obama and Hillary, attacking European leaders or Mueller is not wise. I need something new, too much popcorn.

@ruemara: Everyone else has advised to document, which is a great idea of course. But you might also want to consider a letter/email to your leader about this particular issue and what you have been recommending about the vendor. The tone really should be sorrow instead of anger. Sorrow that the product was poor, sadness that another vendor couldn’t have been substituted earlier and a positive recommendation that you two work together to make sure this vendor is not paid, understands precisely what I went wrong and does not work on another project. This is another way of documenting.

I’m going to be blogging and running tonight, but I did want to share some completely non-snarly news: I beat the odds and got a job.
It’s a secretary job at about $28K a year in Albany, but it’s with NYS, which means full bennies, pension, the works, and it means I could keep applying for more PhD-appropriate jobs within the state. It’s permanent.
And it has health insurance.
Whatever happens with Trumpcare (and believe me, I’m rooting in a massive way for it to fail) at least I’ve now got a boat to climb aboard, that will ensure my continued survival.

@Ajabu: :-( That’s horrible. :-( I understand your anger and frustration. Keep up the fight and contact everyone who might be able to help. Most people have a rough stretch now and then – don’t try to handle it all by yourselves.
Hang in there. Keep fighting to make it work!
Cheers,
Scott.

I love this thread. Righteous bitching.

@Shalimar:
If it’s the troll who has “Fitzmas” in his name, I strongly suspect it’s our old “friend” Unlimited Corporate Cash trying on a new persona.
He got the full-on banhammer from Adam, so I think he’s trying to fly under the radar to avoid another ban.

Currently we’re back in California. Unfortunately, in the Central Valley so no, there’s nothing close for her to go to. And, as a musician, I can barely get a job at gunpoint. So, much as I dread the move (I’m truly, legitimately TOO DAMN OLD to do it again) I’m going to have to drive back to Atlanta. On spec. Hopefully, we’ll both find suitable situations there before too long. On the bright side, we still own a home there so we won’t have to live in a refrigerator carton somewhere. (Unless neither of us get enough to pay the mortgage – then all bets are off) Hell, I’ve been a working musician for over 50 years. I don’t have to eat that often…
Thanks for your interest, I’ll keep you posted. Don’t know what I’d do without the BJ family!

@Another Scott:
Well, if we had any inkling this was going to happen we probably wouldn’t have spent megabucks for our 25th Anniversary party last December but – we won’t have the chance for another one so why the hell not?
As a self employed musician I learned long ago that I don’t do poor. I do broke. Broke is a temporary situation. Poor is a state of mind. My frustration & anger is the bullshit way they treated my wonderful wife who is the best school administrator who ever lived.
As a musician I’m used to being screwed over. Part of the job description.

@Elizabelle: FTR, Warren Gamaliel Harding 2.0 is waiting patiently to take over should Cantaloupe Commodus check out of the White House early. (Think I jest? Compare any photo of Mike Dunce with one of WGH.)

@Mnemosyne: I like to think of it (on the hensteeth-rare occasions when I think of it at all) as Unlamented Coprolite Cache. YMMV…
@Immanentize: Guarded optimism. Sending good thoughts your way. Hang in.
@ArchTeryx: Mazel tov, boychik! Been following your trials&travails for awhile. This looks like it might just be the handhold you need.

@Ajabu:
Yeah, Central CA is where that kind of bullshit is most likely to happen — can I guess the Fresno area? You don’t have to answer, though.
satby
@Ajabu: nope, it’s there, and I’m so sorry! That stinks.

One lesson of Trump’s trip abroad is the Saudis will ultimately be far more successful getting their way with Trump than the Europeans for the reason that the Saudis know how to deal with a corrupt egomaniac — suck up to him and ensure a steady stream of dollars hit his bank account.
The Europeans will try to rely on the obvious logic of their positions. Trump will get bored and will be upset that they’re not kissing his backside and the relationship will never work.
I wish I was joking even a little bit.

@ArchTeryx: congratulations!! Hopefully it will eventually lead to positions more suitable, but happy for you to have health benefits in the meantime!
