On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.
Good Morning All,
This weekday feature is for Balloon Juicers who are on the road, travelling, etc. and wish to share notes, links, pictures, stories, etc. from their escapades. As the US mainland begins the end of the Earth day as we measure it, many of us rise to read about our friends and their transient locales.
So, please, speak up and share some of your adventures, observations, and sights as you explore, no matter where you are. By concentrating travel updates here, it’s easier for all to keep up-to-date on the adventures of our fellow Commentariat. And it makes finding some travel tips or ideas from 6 months ago so much easier to find…
Have at ’em, and have a safe day of travels!
Should you have any pictures (tasteful, relevant, etc….) you can email them to [email protected] or just use this nifty link to start an email: Start an Email to send a Picture to Post on Balloon Juice
Due to technical problems, Tuesday’s post is postponed until Wednesday.
Do travel safely and use this post to chat; the Italy pics will be Wed.

I has a sad.
NotMax
Of course. Everyone knows if it’s Tuesday, this must be Belgium.

Alain, I sent some photos of an Art Deco pharmacy in Italy about a week ago and was wondering if you received them. Thanks.
rikyrah
Awe??
Quinerly
I want my subscription money back. What kind of operation are you running here?
Elizabelle
Alain is just reminding us, the internet gives and the internet takes away.
But talk about readership capture! Cannot wait to see the gorgeous pics and what other BJ community thought about their travels. Prefer TravelWorld to InsanityWorld (which is most of the posts, for obvious reasons ….)
FOR STEEPLEJACK: Hey dude. I found your beloved cava for sale at 3.25 euros yesterday. Down from usual 3.99 euros price.
Will buy a bottle and quaff in your honor later this month. Waiting on the outdoor film festival, Sala Montjuic, which kicks off June 30. La La Land is the second flick; I think, also Spotlight, The Hateful Eight, The Revenant (sensing a theme with the last two — snowscape movies for viewing during a Spanish summer), Buster Keaton’s The General, and some other good stuff … Omar and Mustang and Manhattan and The Apartment … I will miss most of them, alas.
Juicers: mark your calendars for July in Barcelona. High season, yes, but Sala Montjuic is magical. Picnic and imbibe under the stars, and then a concert and great movie.

No pictures?!? ?
Ok then, I will share the news that I’m a new great aunt. Archie Thomas Gibson was born early yesterday morning. Mom, dad and baby all doing well.
No idea why they named him Archie, the first thing my sons said was “at least it wasn’t Jughead”.
So far the baby’s hair is brown and I’m hoping the familial redhead gene doesn’t assert dominance.
debbie
@satby:
Congratulations! I love the name!
Elizabelle
@satby: Congrats. And that’s a British sounding name. He will likely be the only Archie in his primary school classes.
satby
@debbie: really? I’m not sure about it, especially if he ends up a ginger, but that may be my childhood spent being called “freckle-faced strawberry” (popular Kool-Aid flavor at the time). A lifetime of being asked “where’s Jughead” could be his future.
@Elizabelle: Yeah, maybe it’s a family name on the mother’s side.
debbie
@satby:
I love singular names. A friend named her kid Max and it’s turned out to suit him. Let him know there are many, many other Archies, and he’ll be fine.
opiejeanne
@satby: Do most kids know about Archie and Jughead? I had brown hair, straight as a stick, and some freckles and I was called freckle-face too. It made me really angry when I was a kid, but it seems to be a universal insult, one passed down through the generations.
One day the freckles went away. I think I was in HS when I noticed they were gone.
WaterGirl
@satby: Congratulations! I immediately thought of Archie Bunker. Hopefully your Archie will be the opposite of Archie Bunker. :-)

Dropped Poco off for his second day of intensive reprogramming…otherwise known as doggie training/boot camp with daycare play. He walked in like a champ, gave me that “I got this, Mom” look over his shoulder. Strutted off with tail flying high. Have a great day guys!
Laura
Archie is a great name for a wee bairn.
Fingers crossed that Poco is a Moonie.
Elizabelle
@Quinerly: Nobody told Poco it was school. He thinks it’s a social club. Learn up, Poco!
Quinerly
@Elizabelle:
Yep. Punishment for destroying a basement wall, a $200 crate plus some stuff that upsets me too much to mention. Very expensive punishment.?
Steeplejack
@Elizabelle:
Jeez, that’s so cheap even I’m beginning to have my doubts!
Steeplejack
No pictures? Guess I should have saved my 5,000-word think piece on Delmarva and GPS for today.
eclare
@NotMax: Hahaha….

Alain, if we’re sending several pictures on a topic, do you want them all in one email, or one email on each. Also, full resolution or reduced?
I went to the Summer of Love exhibition at the De Young Museum in San Francisco on Sunday. Took a few pix that I thought were interesting.
JR in WV
I reduced my photos down from 5 MB to 220 KB or so by resizing them and lessening the quality bar from 98% to 50% or so. They still look good on the screen, but don’t hog a ton of bandwidth.
Then I picked 8 or 10 at a time and compressed that group to reduce email load, wound up able to get the whole bunch attached to a single email, along with the text file, which is actually a libre office odt file.
But Alain hasn’t run them, so obviously I did it all wrong!!! no actually, It’s just too much data/work to be trivial to post it.
I appreciate the magnitude of the task. I understand he’s working on a tool for us to submit with that will make his job easier, so he’s doing a lot of up front work to reduce the daily load considerable. Hope yall enjoy the pix!
