Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Come on, man.

I did not have telepathic declassification on my 2022 bingo card.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Presidents are not kings, and Plaintiff is not President.

All your base are belong to Tunch.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

A dilettante blog from the great progressive state of West Virginia.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

We still have time to mess this up!

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Being the leader of the world means to be the leader of peace.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

My little girl is getting bigger every day.

I just needed to share one of my prouder parenting moments as a momentary break from current event craziness:

Baby’s first keg stand from oh so long ago.

Now that we know what you look like, it’s only a matter of time before one of the elite hackers here uses darkweb AI facial recognition drones to figure out your real name, Mayhew.

Since this is an open thread, I’m going to exercise my prerogative to be a downer. Chuck Todd tells me 68% of Republicans agree with DJT’s remarks on Charlottesville. As a Jew, what I take from this is that a substantial portion of U.S. citizenry is relatively untroubled by people who would prefer me and my little girls to be dead. For the first time in my life, I have just a hint of a sliver of understanding of what proto-fascist Bibi Netanyahu is talking about when he says Jews have only one home. (And I know Jews are relatively privileged in this country compared to a number of other folks. But still.)

@Major Major Major Major: I see they included Winged Victory in Philly’s 30th Street Station, which I see frequently as I’m in that station several times a week.

I didn’t see another of my favorites, from Princeton, NJ, a guy sitting on the curb reading a book and eating a sandwich. Once while waiting for my wife I positioned myself a few feet from him in an identical pose. It was meant to be a private joke but before she showed up I looked up and realized I’d become a tourist attraction, as a number of people were snapping pics.

@MomSense: I don’t know if it’s still there, but years ago there was one I loved at Hains Point in Washington DC, called “The Awakening”. It was a giant apparently emerging from the ground, a hand over here, a knee there, his face up there…

It always had kids climbing on it, which I think was the point.

@Ceci n est pas mon nym:

Oh right. I remember that one. He had a sort of nest of a head and beard and big hands poking through the ground.

The obelisk at Vigeland Park is mind blowing. From a distance you see a sort of textured obelisk but when you get closer to it you realize it’s all carved bodies.

    obelisk

Now that I think of it, one of my favorite statues at the park is the one of the toddler having a tantrum. I had a toddler in tow the first time I saw it and it was a perfect depiction of the real thing.

Adorable baby and her rather nice looking Daddy. So as to put you a ease I’m probably older than your Mom and today is my 48th Wedding anniversary. Remember clearly what the weather was like 48 years ago, It was very hot, and the air was heavy and still, even though we were a couple hundred miles inland from the Atlantic. This was the day Camille made landfall in Mississippi. As we were headed to the mountains, that made no impression at the time..

Mine got it half right. They had a cocktail party when I was 3 and someone found me drinking out of the glasses that people set down. Mom said I was positively drunk. Every since then when I drank I had wiskey. Beer if forced, wine only on occasions. Of course they were too busy to take pictures.
Alas tis no more. My drinking days are over.
