Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Usually wrong but never in doubt

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

It’s a doggy dog world.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Second rate reporter says what?

How can republicans represent us when they don’t trust women?

You cannot shame the shameless.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

As long as McCarthy is Speaker, the House will never be in order.

UNC board bans legal action at civil rights center
    SEPTEMBER 08, 2017 10:16 AM

After months of controversy and widespread opposition, the UNC Board of Governors on Friday approved a ban on litigation that will prevent the UNC Center for Civil Rights from doing legal work for low-income and minority groups.

The ban would apply to all UNC centers, but would effectively end the civil rights center at UNC’s law school. The future of the center is unclear; its work could continue if it becomes a separate nonprofit group or a legal clinic at UNC. The center is currently funded with private donations.

UNC board members who supported the ban said it’s improper and outside UNC’s mission to engage in legal action against other government entities such as school districts and county boards. Critics of the ban said it would harm UNC students’ legal education, hurt the university’s academic reputation and effectively shut down the center, which was founded by noted civil rights attorney Julius Chambers.

The stuck the camera up my femoral artery & found . . . nothing. No blockage, very little plaque. They did a sonogram & an MRI and can’t find a thing but they do know it was a heart attack. They think either the blockage melted away or I had an infection of the pericardium That combined with stress restricted flow. So, despite no evidence of an issue I am on blood thinners but not experience any shortness of breath or anything.

My dad asked about using an h-bomb to redirect the hurricane (shrug, old -marine everything has a kinetic solution). I said I had’t heard of models addressing the idea, but I think you’d just get a radioactive hurricane.

I left my shabby chic house with it’s shabby chic roof in St. Pete. The house is on high ground at least. I already tubbed and tarped everything I wanna keep and threw out everything else. Better to do it now instead of when it’s wet.

Evacuated to Trinity in a decent house without shutters. The sub division is well maintained so projectiles should hopefully her at a minimum. My neighborhood is old school with lotsa overgrown vegetation. I have family in the Ft Meyer area that I usually use as a backup residence. That’s probably not going to possible this time.

Nestled in House Spending Bill: Campaign Finance Deregulation
House package is unlikely to advance in the Senate, but provisions easing rules for companies and churches could become bargaining chips
    By Cezary Podkul
    Sept. 9, 2017 10:00 a.m. ET

House Republicans are backing several provisions that could reshape campaign finance rules ahead of next year’s midterm elections as spending negotiations continue this fall.

The measures are tucked into a GOP package of spending bills currently being debated in the House. While the House package is unlikely to advance in the Senate, its provisions could become bargaining chips in the negotiations leading up to the next government funding deadline, now Dec. 8.

The inclusion of the deregulatory measures in the spending package is prompting pushback from campaign-finance watchdogs, who worry they may ultimately become law.

If they do, churches may be able to contribute to candidates without fear of losing their tax-exempt status, furthering President Donald Trump’s promise to “get rid of and totally destroy” a law that forbids such activity.

Corporations would be able to ask their employees to donate to unlimited numbers of trade associations’ political action groups instead of limiting employee solicitations to one group per year.

Other measures included in the bill would continue to prevent the Internal Revenue Service and the Securities and Exchange Commission from implementing rules that would affect political activities of 501(C)(4) nonprofits and publicly traded corporations, respectively. And the government would again be prohibited from requiring federal contractors to disclose their political contributions and campaign expenditures.

These multiple provisions—called riders—are frequently inserted into appropriation bills as a way to pass controversial policies without having them voted on individually, since they will “ride along” with a larger spending bill.

Just got an email that my university will be closed tomorrow. It seems a bit of overkill since they are now saying that Irma will be west of us (Atlanta) and we probably won’t get hit too badly. But I’m not complaining! The spousal unit is now praying that the institution of higher learner where he works will also close.

We had lunch in a Burmese restaurant that we visit frequently and it was absolutely packed; many of the people there appeared to be Burmese. It’s a tiny place and we have never seen anything close to the number of people eating there (or waiting for a table). Someone said that the visitors were mostly Florida refugees! Somehow they figured out how to find one of the two Burmese restaurants in Atlanta (and ours is better than the other one) soon after arriving.

Broward GOP uncovers a nasty secret about its young party secretary

The Broward County Republicans are in turmoil today after revelations that a freshly elected member of their executive board is a man who once was charged with attempted murder in the savage claw-hammer beating of a then-classmate at a Los Angeles prep school for multi-millionaires’ children.

Four months after 28-year-old Rupert Tarsey was elected secretary, party officials have found out the young philanthropist and supporter of President Donald Trump is really Rupert Ditsworth.

And a decade ago, the then-Beverly Hills teenager was charged with attempted murder in Los Angeles after hitting Harvard-Westlake School classmate Elizabeth Barcay over the head at least 40 times, splitting her skull open.

    […]

The grandson of Jason Tarsey, owner of the historic Dunes Hotel in Las Vegas, Tarsey was arrested in 2007 after the violent incident in a car near the private school.

Tarsey, according to published reports, invited Barcay, the daughter of a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, to ride with him to Jamba Juice after a big exam.

Tarsey eventually parked the car and allegedly pulled a hammer from a backpack. He then started hitting her over the head, opened the passenger’s door and pulled her out while choking her before driving away.

According to the Times, Tarsey’s parents rushed him into psychiatric treatment as Barcay recovered painfully and eventually attended the school prom in a wheelchair.

At first, California prosecutors filed the case in juvenile court, but it was dismissed. They tried it again in adult court.

“In the end, I pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor,” Tarsey said. “It’s not the charges that matter, it’s what happens in court.”

Tarsey, 6 feet 2 inches tall, claimed self-defense.

@rikyrah: That’s his story. Leaving out that he pled guilty to a felony once he got out of the institution his parents had hustled him off to. Apparently ended up getting time served for the hospital time, but the civil settlement probably would have made a trial difficult.

The fact that he’s running for any sort of office and pretending there was no felony shows there is some serious creepiness going on.

@rikyrah: That’s exactly what someone who is not a Republican would say. See, Trump is neither Republican nor Democrat!!

    @rikyrah:

I found the poster too frightening. Nope. I live too close to the woods to go a movie about clowns abducting people in the Maine woods.

@rikyrah: It broke a box office record so I guess loads of people are excited about “It”. Not me since I don’t watch horror movies. The last one I endured was “Beloved” with Oprah and Danny Glover. That was way more than enough of that genre for me. I love Stephen King’s non-horror stuff though. Read “The Dome” recently and it was mega long but pretty good.

Irma is not funny at all, but that photo certainly is.

All I could think of was; Does the camera make my ass look big?

Haven’t read the thread yet, hoping there is no bad news that will me me look like an ass for posting my silly comment.

@Hal: I wasn’t sure what I was looking at so I started reading the comments. Holy shit, no wonder you guys say never to read the comments. So much hate.

WG: “So much hate.” opie.: “so much stupid.”

It’s that special blend needed to make a true conservative.

I don’t comment too often but I love this site and you it all the time.
I’m in West Palm Beach dug for the duration. So far it is just really windy and rainy but we’ve had Tornado warnings almost every half and hour or so.

I’ve got my 96 year old Dad here with me because he lives on the Island and they evacuated his place on the ocean on Thursday so we are making the best of it.
With the shutters up it feels like night all the time but we still have electricity and the cable/internet connection is working so …there is that.

@Sondra Fabe: Glad your dad can be with you, sending good thoughts your way. Wow, 96. I hope he has a home to go back to. Change is hard enough without being 96!

Jacksonville is starting to feel it. Lots of wind and rain. Saint Augustine beach is starting to flood. Jax beach is a mess.
Glad to be stuck at the hospital

@Schlemazel: Ain’t that the shit. Late to the thread here, but if you read it, “Healing vibes coming your way. “
