Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

They spent the last eight months firing professionals and replacing them with ideologues.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

People are weird.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Is trump is trying to break black America over his knee? signs point to ‘yes’.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

When you’re in more danger from the IDF than from Russian shelling, that’s really bad.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

Call the Senate

BREAKING: Sorry to say I just heard Graham Cassidy now has a plan to get to the floor for a vote this month. 1/

— Andy Slavitt (@ASlavitt) September 15, 2017

You know what to do. Here are the highlights to argue.

1) Need to cover more people not less
2) Don’t punish states for taking care of their own citizens
3) Blows up state budgets
4) Medicaid covers people at less cost and same satisfaction as private insurance

And once you call your Senators, call your governor. If this bill passes, thirty five governors will be handed massive problems that they cannot solve.

That map looks like it rewards all the states that did NOT expand Medicaid under ACA. My only question is Florida. Did Florida expand Medicaid in spite of Gov (batboy) Scott?

It obviously punishes blue states that DID expand medicaid.

Do we know if they think they actually have the votes? Yesterday they said 47-48.

I wonder if it’s true they really can’t fund the giant Trump tax cuts for rich people without gutting healthcare.

If so, this is a twofer! :)

Block their healthcare gutting, also kill their rich people tax cutting! Very efficient use of our time.

Has anyone heard anything from Bannon lately on the populist agenda? Many respected news agencies told me he was a raving populist. What was that based on? His bullshit?

I’ve called my Senators and posted on Facebook to tell my peeps to call their Senators and Governors.

In answer to M^4’s question, that’s what I heard, too, but if the theory is that they want to bring this to the floor, I don’t want to assume that they don’t think they can get the votes they need.

So it takes away 27 billion from CA and 19 billion from NY and gives 8 billion to TX?

    How odd!

    @catclub:

That map looks like it rewards all the states that did NOT expand Medicaid under ACA.

That’s exactly what it does – it takes the money saved by killing the Medicaid expansion and allocates it among all 50 states, guaranteeing that the expansion states are losers.

Rand Paul fighting for Kentucky’s Medicaid funding while pretending to be an ideological purist is a fascinating dynamic.

It is. Paul Ryan isn’t the biggest fraud in Congress. Rand Paul is. Beats Ryan by a mile. It pains Rand Paul to admit it but a hell of a lot of the white people in Kentucky benefited from Obamacare so he has to play this stupid game. It’s especially amusing because he’s a physician.

Funny how Republicans like to claim they are the party of ‘principle’. I find that odd. I thought principle meant to be upstanding and to be honest. Apparently somewhere Republicans have changed the definition of principle to ‘screw the other guy out of all their stuff’. And the MSM buys it and the band plays on……

If the phone lines are busy, text “resist” to 504-09. It takes about a minute to send a fax to Rep, Senators, and Governor. They can also do calls and letters. The service is free. I did one last night and if I can’t get through on my lunch break, I’ll do one again today.

Thank you for the talking points, David!!

When you read the NYTimes political coverage keep in mind that their lead reporters are negotiating a book deal about Trump.

Obviously they’ll have to retain their access and “bond” to earn the advance.

Trump hates them! They’re providing tough coverage! Really! That’s true! How do we know? Because they’re super-duper people, that’s why! Just ask them. EXTREMELY objective.

I made another two calls and now am in a foul mood. I hate having to list, in detail, exactly what the Republicans are threatening to do — it makes my argument to the interns stronger but it also makes me furious to be reminded of what straights we are in as a country.

I start perserverating on all the Republicans in my life (comes with the territory of living in a Cincinnati suburb) and wondering if I really want to continue to be civil to them. And then I feel bad because that isn’t the sort of person I want to be.

Well I called Portman and left a message, they never answer their phones. I was following the 5 calls Daily script and then I went ‘Ping’ and ended up being really angry, so I suspect I will be written off as not credible. I’ll give Brown a call and pat him on the back. At least I won’t go ping on him.

@Percysowner: Try Portman’s constituent hotline number — on the bottom of Portman’s homepage, where his offices are listed, it’s with the Columbus office number. It’s the 800 number. I’ve had the best luck with getting an intern with that.

But overall you are right, he has the worst office help. They have no work ethic, which isn’t surprising when you consider they are young Republicans.

And if it makes you feel better, I also lost my temper. I got through to the Cleveland office this morning and the Toledo office this afternoon. I refuse to feel bad about it. This is an issue worth being angry about. If it makes the interns uncomfortable, good.

Seriously. It’s exhausting to get up every morning and check to see if something you depend on for your health is or isn’t in the cross-hairs again, and/or if the sniper’s taken the shot. That in itself has to be taking a toll on people’s health on top of whatever else they’re dealing with.
