Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Consistently wrong since 2002

We are aware of all internet traditions.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Let there be snark.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

I really should read my own blog.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

This post is in: Blatant Liars and the Lies They Tell

FacebookTweetEmail

Busted outright:

There is no honor among anti-immigrant advocates and liars, I suppose. After dutifully lying on behalf of the president regarding his abhorrent language (“shithole countries”), Sens. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and David Perdue (R-Ga.) were outed by the White House. The Post reports:

Three White House officials said Perdue and Cotton told the White House that they heard “shithouse” rather than “shithole,” allowing them to deny the president’s comments on television over the weekend. The two men initially said publicly that they could not recall what the president said.

Not only did these two repeatedly lie, but Cotton also impugned the integrity of Sen. Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.), who told the truth. Asked whether the accusation that Trump spoke the offending words or the sentiment was phony, Cotton lied, “Yes.” He went on to say, “Senator Durbin has misrepresented what happened in White House meetings before, and he was corrected by Obama administration officials by it.”

Anyone who quotes them in the media should note with the quote that they are blatant liars and have lied to the media before.

It’s all so normalized now that there’s no way back for the Republic. Here lies the United States, 1776-2016. It was a good run, but, hey, so was Byzantium and the Ottomans, among a great many others.

That’s asking a lot of Our Great Nation’s Only Media, though I don’t see why.

A few repetitions of “Senator X said _____ — which is a lie, and the Senator knows it’s a lie” would be refreshing though.

(In place of NPR’s usual “Senator X said _____ — and we’ll have to leave it there,” for instance.)

So let’s pause a moment and consider Cotton, Miller’s and the rest logic here. By discouraging immigration from “shit hole” countries this will somehow entourage immigration from top shelf countries, you know the places that are white an affluent like Sweden. Because you know how people just love to pull up roots when things are going swimmingly for them. It’s not just Trump who is out of touch and living in the 1850s, it’s a whole swath of the population.

I made sure to call Durbin’s offices to let them know how much I appreciated his work (and the backbone shown) not just on this issue, but in general. DC and Chicago were impossible to get through to, so I called Springfield and Carbondale. The people on the other end seemed to appreciate the calls of support. As a former staffer on the hill (well, legal fellow) ages ago, I knew that we used to tally calls for vs calls against, and how much an office appreciates supportive calls. I can confirm that at least with respect to Durbin’s office, they were very appreciative to hear nice things from a constituent.

Chuck Schumer was on Stephen Colbert’s show last night and pulled zero punches about the liars Cotton and Perdue. He called them out for the way they spoke about Dick Durbin and went on to describe Durbin as a trusted, honest friend he’s known for many years. It was great to hear him speak so strongly about the lying Republicans.

The 239 weight strikes me as odd, because (IIRC) that’s the exact same weight that “Dr. Feelgood” said he weighed in 2016.

Did the good doctor today mention statins? Dr. Feelgood said he took a “small dose” (or something) of a statin. Cholesterol numbers can look very good (for some people) when they’re on (the right) statin.

Genes are a big part of this, but so is stress and lots of other things we don’t understand. My older brother weighs at least 30 pounds more than me and has lower cholesterol numbers. And he mostly eats fast food and microwave stuff. :-/

    2. Fuck everyone for making me defend Trump when it comes to his weight. If you want to dissect his bad habits, his obvious mental health issues, his physical fitness, fine, but if you just want to bloviate about a number on a scale then fuck you. In 2012 his driver license listed him as 6′ 2″. That was already an exaggeration. Barack Obama is 6′ 1″ and clearly taller in a side-by-side comparison. The extra inches give him more room to play with in the denominator.

Three White House officials said Perdue and Cotton told the White House that they heard “shithouse” rather than “shithole,” allowing them to deny the president’s comments on television over the weekend. The two men initially said publicly that they could not recall what the president said.

It’s not even that they’re lying, but that they’re lying so badly about something so ridiculously petty. They’re not even giving Trump an out, for fuck’s sake – “Haiti is a shithouse country” is hardly better than “Haiti is a shithole country.” They’re just doing the “ah, but TECHNICALLY the lying liberal media is lying and liberal.”

@Frankensteinbeck: A public announcement that a current president is in ill health could be seen as a security issue. So I could see outright lying, in case of severe illness or impairment. It seems less likely he would shade the truth for the president’s vanity but I understand the president has the right to limit what is released publicly.

I actually could see an argument in favor of lying about this while a 25th Amendment solution is being worked on — nobody on the planet wants to hear that the President of the United States is sliding into dementia, except people who actively want to do us harm.

The problem is that I seriously doubt the Republicans are taking steps to remove him, so IMO it’s more dangerous to just flat-out lie about it, especially since the patent falsehoods may actually embolden the people who want to do us harm.

    It’s some catch, that Catch-22.

Hicks’s Wiki page is a total fluff job!

During the campaign, she played the role of gatekeeper to press members who wanted to speak with Trump, handling over 250 requests a day, and deciding which reporters would be allowed to speak with him.[14][25] Hicks also took dictation from Trump for his tweets, and then sent the text to another person in the Trump organization who actually sent out the tweets from Trump’s official account.[21][26] When in New York City, she would spend most of her day sitting in Trump’s office, handling inquiries from the press and taking dictation from him to tweet.[27] The demands of the campaign took a personal toll, as they caused a breakup between Hicks and her boyfriend of six years.

OMG, where are all the editors?

@Repatriated: The Turkish military has a long and storied history of staging a coup when Islamicists try to take over the government, putting tanks on the streets, shooting a bunch of troublemakers, getting a non-religious government elected by comparatively fair democratic means and then quietly going back to their barracks. It’s part of their inheritance from Attaturk. They had to stop doing that as it was getting in the way of Turkey joining the European Union (but it wasn’t a problem for membership of NATO since it was a convenient place for the US to base nuclear missiles close to the Soviet Union).

But I’m saying that in the normal chain of command a general can’t just call up a military doctor and tell him what to do. Plus, John Kelly is retired, so he’s no longer technically a general.

  196. 196.

    Yarrow

    January 16, 2018 at 6:26 pm

Well, the President is the Commander in Chief, so isn’t he over all the military? Can’t he order them to do whatever he wants? I know they can defy illegal orders but lying about his health isn’t illegal, is it? I can see him faking some results and ordering the military doctor to read it and answer questions about it.

I saw Sanjay Gupta on CNN say that it was highly unusual for the doctor to have the press conference and that he’d never seen that happen before. That would lead me to believe the doctor was told to do it and make it a big show and make Trump look good.

@Mnemosyne: I can see an argument for not confirming to the world via lab reports and doctor’s statement that the president is unhealthy and cognitively impaired. The world can see it for themselves, but confirming it could cause even more chaos.
