Belafon
Texas Tech. Neither team has won a national championship.
Mary G
@Belafon: I know nothing except it’s usually Duke and so it is nice to see new teams get in.
raven
I hadn’t watched Texas Tech until Saturday, both teams play helacious D!

I’m still hurting from Auburn losing by a point in the Final Four. I haven’t followed Auburn BB in years, but when I got into football, I followed their hoops team, too. I definitely remember their last Sweet Sixteen, and I *think* I remember their Elite Eight, so this was a huge deal for them – Auburn is *not* a basketball school (nor is Alabama really a BB state)
The Dangerman
First to 20 wins.
It’s a shame they play these last games in huge domes; shooting percentages plummet.

Blue state team v. red state team. You know who to root for.

Watching with my parents. They’re complaining that the game isn’t exciting enough.
Mr Stagger Lee
I am going with the Red Raiders, just because they are the new team, and I guess with Baylor winning the women’s title, an all Texas/Big 12 winning the titles is kind of cool considering it wasn’t Kansas
Carolina Dave
TT doesn’t score a bucket for the first 7:32 of the National Championship and when they finally do, they are down 3. Worst NC ever. I love college basketball but I may retire early to finish a book.
Mr Stagger Lee
I wonder how are all those Conservative/Republican Baseball owners feel(especially the racist maroons who own the Cubs) now that Trump has scrapped the MLB/MLBPA deal with the Cuban baseball Association, (of course the Obama Administration green lighted the deal)
Duane
@raven: That’s a lot of defense so far. First team to fifty wins?
Alternative Fax, a hip hop artist from Idaho
@Steve in the ATL: That would be not Texas Tech, then?
Amir Khalid
Which kind of university sportsball is this? Basket, foot, or base?
Steve in the ATL
@Alternative Fax, a hip hop artist from Idaho: correct—Texas Tech is too close to the willow tree
Steve in the ATL
@Alternative Fax, a hip hop artist from Idaho: plus, Charlottesville is absolutely beautiful, and liberal, while Lubbock is a [expletive deleted] dump in a deep red part of a deep red state.

All I can say is that everybody who came to the Twin Cities for the games better get out by Wednesday night. We’re supposed to get at least a foot of snow in southern MN on Thursday and Friday.
ThresherK
Texas Tech, the Red Raiders, are often given to wearing black. In the semifinal they wore red and pulled an upset. They are wearing red tonight.
Congrats to Baylor’s Lady Bears.
Duane
@ThresherK: Baylor hung on and won. Both teams played well. Good game.
Gin & Tonic
@Amir Khalid: Basket.
mrmoshpotato
@Amir Khalid: Basketball. Championship game.
Alternative Fax, a hip hop artist from Idaho
@Steve in the ATL: That’s why they’re not scoring much; willow trouble! And of course Charlottesville is lovely – especially this time of year.
ThresherK
@Duane: Yep, ND left everything out there. And I can’t remember the last time I saw that FT series at the end–down by 2, an 80% shooter misses the first one, then tries to miss the second one, and makes it.
mrmoshpotato
@gbear: A foot of snow? Hot damn! I mean cold damn!

@Steve in the ATL:
Yes, but Texas Tech has Katharine Hayhoe, climate scientist and one of the authors of last November’s NOAA National Climate Assessment. She had to go on show after show — Bill Moyers, CBS, CNN, Ted Talks — to let people know that Trump didn’t know squat about the government’s own report. Check out her blog — mostly videos — to see and hear someone who has spent years explaining the facts, both to people who appreciate facts and to people who will not hear facts, because if they did, they might have to change. ( Her contention is that people are mostly not debating against the facts, they’re debating against the idea that they might have to change. ) She’s well worth listening to.
The fist time she gave a lecture on climate science at TT, and asked for questions, the first question she got was, “You’re a Democrat, aren’t you?” To which her response was, “No. I’m a Canadian.”
If I were watching the game, I would root for Texas Tech, because of her.

Speaking of college, I’m back from class…I know it’s been a long time since I was an undergrad in college, but when did it become acceptable to walk into class late, I’m talking like 15 min…I mean it’s graduate level evening classes and I know folks have to work…but the working folks seem to make it on time…is puntcuality a bad thing for da youths…
James E Powell
Texas Tech has started both halfs – halves? – playing like dullards.

As a Purdue fan I am still in too much pain from the loss in the Elite Eight to Virginia. I am so used to them crashing out earlier than predicted so I am glad they did well, but that was right there and it got away!
Mr Stagger Lee
@BC in Illinois: And Buddy Holly!
Amir Khalid
@Mr Stagger Lee:
And the late great Bobby Keys, who played the sax solo on Brown Sugar and toured with The Rolling Stones for decades.

Lord let me tell ya’ll bout my coworker…former supervisor (lets call her FS)
She has a college freshman daughter (let’s call her R) who a USA team tumber…so ok…the daughter goes to the ER cause she has a sore throat or something…and I guess she’s also dehydrated, so they gave her something for the sore throat and gave her IV fluids for dehydration.
So my coworker says the IV machine starts making this noise…and R starts screaming/fidgeting saying her arm hurts where the IV is, so FS runs to call a Nurse. Nurse comes rushing in. So R has anxiety disorder and a history of panic attacks…so she has a panic attack and apparently started seizing…they had to sedate her. They did scans and stuff and told FC they tell FC that they believe that a bubble from the IV fluids was introDuced into R’s arm. They kept her sedated in hope that the bubble was absorbed by her body. Once they did that, they bring her out of sedation.
So she was in a medically induced coma for at least 24hrs, and then brought out once they were sure there was no longer a bubble. She woke up and was in the hospital for at least 2 more days…she’s home now, but apparently she having trouble with her left side movements. She can walk, but with a noticeable limp on her left side and she’s having trouble opening her left hand once it’s closed.
It’s so…surreal…she went to the ER w/a sore throat and…wow.
It’s really sad, this young lady is/was ann Olympic level athlete…a champoin who had been tumbling since she was 5 (she’s 19 now)! She was looking forward to one last national competition and one last international competition and that not gonna happen now.
It’s like…wow.

@lamh36:
That’s hard. My sympathies to your friend’s adughter.

Breaking News from LA’s channel 9: A mysterious package with an envelope containing white powder was sent to the Hollywood home of Eric Idle. Some rooms were evacuated but they are letting people back in now.

@lamh36: I think that attending class is viewed as totally optional these days – they pay for the education and can choose to attend if they want to. Students do expect the materials for the course to be available online, as well as the lecture on video. Which is pretty reasonable given the amount of money they pay.
WaterGirl
@lamh36: oh my god, lamh. that is horrifying and terrifying. are they hooked up with the appropriate specialists?
From Both Sides Of The Pond
Taught at Texas Tech for a year. Absolutely fantastic department (history) to be part of – most supportive and encouraging environment for both research and teaching in my career. Of course, that’s because it had to be to survive Lubbock. Absolute hellhole in its politics and attitudes, along with being so flat people would build little hills in their yards to provide some elevation changes. I used to joke that the only thing breaking the wind sweeping in from the Rockies 300 miles away was whatever prairie dog happened to be standing up between here and there…
Could’ve been worse. Could’ve been Roswell, NM
ThresherK
So, 1:30 on the clock, very close game, five timeouts available (combined). Does this game end before 11:45 Eastern?

@lamh36: Oh dear, what a sad story.
But I don’t think FV and R can wait on getting a second opinion from a new doctor who is not affiliated with that hospital. The continuing motor issues makes me think maybe R needs to see a neurologist for follow up. Soon.
It’s rare that a doctor tells you directly that another doctor screwed up, especially if they are in the same system. So I wouldn’t expect that, though I might consider a consultation with a medical malpractice lawyer.
I imagine FC and R are still shaken up and not psyched it go into warrior mode, but they don’t have a choice.
Good luck to them.
ThresherK
Overtime? Well, my original guess is off the table.

VA by six, 30 seconds and a hill to climb for TT. And the Cavaliers are shooting FTs again.
