Up next:
1.) Finish mulching and preparing existing raised bed
2.) Install new raised bed (wood pile to the left)
3.) Plant annuals and early crops
4.) Powerwash deck
5.) Replace 3 bad board on deck
6.) Restain deck
And then we move on the the path which is going to be an absolute nightmare. I like the new color of the shed better than the retina burning yellow.
chopper
that’s a fine lookin’ shed. and you didn’t break any bones painting it!
sfinny
I love the yellow shed. It is such a happy color.
Denali
Looking good!
wasabi gasp
Lots of social security check potential.
SiubhanDuinne
It’s all beautiful! The yellow shed is a better color than the one you sampled the other day.
My recent road trip took me nowhere near you. Will try again in a couple of months.
SiubhanDuinne
@sfinny: Yellow has always been my favorite color, and John’s shed is why.

A powerwasher works just as well to peel the skin right off your toes or hand as it does to peel dirt and mildew off decks and walls. Just a split-second of inattention, and I carved quite a nick into my left thumb while powerwashing our front porch last week.
CaseyL
Adorable shed, lovely yard; you’re making the house a nice little paradise, John.
spudgun
Now that’s pretty! Much better yellow than the first one.

Evening BJ.
Tonight was my last Monday class…turned in my research paper and gave my presentation on it…I’d like to think it was the best presentation of the night…but I don’t want to toot my own horn…but I felt really comfortable giving the presentation than I thought
Next up …one last Thursday class, and then that take home exam…I’m gonna try to finish this weekend…so then I’ll be done with school for the Spring semester…then it’s off to London and back for summer school.
Barbara
@lamh36: It sounds like you are living your best life!

The shed looks cheerful. I like the color. The garden is shaping up nicely too. Well done!
Aleta
Very nice color. Yellow’s hard to get right but that one looks perfect. Bet it will look nice in snow or in gray weather too.

So … director and film writer John Singleton died today. He was only 51 died after complication from a stroke.
When my sister was a student at SUBR John Singleton came to campus to speak at a lecture series about 6 years ago. She said he was really nice, sweet and humble. She says he told her she had “Poetic Justice” hair…lol

The event was a part of a lecture series at SUBR in 2013…where he discussed his filmography!

@SiubhanDuinne: Personally my favorite color is green, but certain yellow things make me happy. Like the Forsythia in April.

That 32-page paper that I was volunteered to read after a full day of solo caring for two toddlers wasn’t submitted on Tuesday, or Wednesday, or… On what should have been a completely predictable schedule, it became a 36-page paper that was submitted at around 5:00 pm on Friday. But today my son told me he’d received an A on it. Since it’s basically the culmination of about 18 months of work, that’s very good. So now he’s one final exam and one project submission away from being done – hopefully by this Friday, since he has an airplane ticket out of the country for Saturday.

All looking good, the yellow is perfect, the bird feeders well placed to attract visitors to the raised beds, and the willow vigorous and ready to whomp. Just need a pic of Lily.

@lamh36: Don’t hide your light under a bushel, stand tall, pull your shoulders back, accept the accolades that your acheivement merits!
I am in awe of your reach – making no sacrifice between academics and travel. You’ve given major^4 a real run for frequently traveling jackal, and your pursuit of this graduate degree while attending to family, foofarah, and an everwidening global footprint and all with elan.
Sending you all the good that comes with study and a well lived life.

@sfinny:
I adore forsythia. Only here in Jawja we usually see it in late January-mid February.
TaMara (HFG)
Back yard looks great….that shed just makes me smile.
ETA: And it’s snowing here…like big wet flakes accumulating on everything. Ugh.
laura
Also, the yellow shed is lovely.
feebog
Yellow color is perfect. Now quit slacking off an mow the lawn.
Aleta
I know someone who painted his fish shack fluorescent orange. Zowee. It shows up better than the rest in the fog though.
NotMax
Stain or treat the underside of the new boards before putting them in place.
sfinny
@lamh36: So sad to hear this. Loved his movies and can’t believe he is gone so soon.
Viva BrisVegas
No backyard is complete without a Hills hoist.

Same shade of yellow which Biden is using for campaign rally signs.
Coincidence?

@lamh36:
I believe you were awesome.
If you wish in the world to advance,
Your merits you’re bound to enhance,
You must stir it and stump it
And blow your own trumpet,
Or trust me, you haven’t a chance!
Duane
When you say “the path” is that a physical path in the ground or a spiritual self-development kind of path?
SiubhanDuinne
@lamh36:
Such a young man. That’s profoundly sad, to go so soon. May he rest in peace.
jl
I thought the shed was already painted yellow.
Oh, well… as long as we get another pretty Cole yard pic out of it, everything is fine. Thanks.
Leto
Good looking yellow. Adds a nice amount of color without being an emergency beacon.
@Duane: All these questions, and more, will be answered on next weeks, “Balloon Juice presents: John Cole’s This Fucking Old House!” Check your local listings for show times.
lamh36
@laura: oh…thx.
I’m admittedly more tired than I usually am…but I pushing through it and trying my best to live my best life, but also try to do a lil bit more.
after this year though, I may slow down a bit on the travel…keep it down to 1-2 “major” trips a year…
Ron
Good job! Such an improvement. Hope your drainage is OK.
wenchacha
Hey, what a nice first sight of the page as it appears! Looks grest, Mr. Cole.
piratedan
i dunno, it seems to me that the willow has moved…. a bit closer to the house….
Mart
I dunno, the Willow looks a little close to the shed…

@lamh36:
Loved his work on “The Race Card” episode of The People v. O.J. Simpson.

Squint just right and there’s vincent d’onofrio squatting near the green beans.

@lamh36: Nice work and safe travels. It sounds like you’re having a great time!

@Aleta:
I’m guessing the shack was painted that way for visibility, rather than aesthetic appeal.
opiejeanne
@lamh36: Did you find some walking shoes for your upcoming trip?
opiejeanne
@lamh36: Wow! Take a bow. In fact, take several bows. Quite an accomplishment.
Your trips have made me a little envious. We didn’t go to Europe until we were retired, partly because we had three kids and the youngest one finally flew the coop not long before that. She fed our cats and kept an eye on the house when we took our first trip.
trollhattan
@oatler.:
Shed 1 cleverly disguised as a…willow!
Sab
Is Cole going to plant ivy? He never let us know his decision.
ETA: very very nice color for that shed.
Yellow is difficult. Much better than the weird pale yellow with green tinge I picked for our bathroom 10 years ago. So disheartened by my choice that we are afraid to repaint. After all we could always do worse, and we did very badly the first time.
Not so for Cole. Second try was right on.
Mnemosyne
@lamh36:
Neither of us ever met him, but Singleton was a couple of years ahead of G and me in film school at USC and was already a star.
It’s a little extra scary for us because we’re basically the same age as he was. ?
Doug R
@Mart: 7: Move Willow away from neighbor’s property to avoid lawsuit from branch damage to neighbor’s roof.
Sab
@Mnemosyne: So many amazing talents try to power through heart and blood pressure and other health issues. Hollywood is ruthless. Don’t do it . It will kill you.
Mel
@sfinny: @SiubhanDuinne:
It’s a buttercups and warm sunshine kind of yellow, isn’t it? It will be as lovely in wintertime against the snow as it is now amidst the greenery and the garden beds!
Mel
@lamh36: Congratulations!!
Please don’t doubt how excellent the results of all your hard work, creativity, and preparation were! I am absolutely certain that your presentation was terrific. You should be so proud of all the things that you have accomplished!
I am always amazed by how you manage to balance all the elements of your life with such skill, grace and positivity. Enjoy your upcoming travels, and keep making time in your hectic schedule for the things that give you joy! You deserve them!
Dorothy A. Winsor
@lamh36: Congratulations to you! Well done.

@Sab:
Unsolicited advice: I found a great pale yellow about 20 years ago that worked so well the name has stuck with me: Duron Sugar Cookie. Duron’s gone (bought by Sherwin-Williams?), but if you Google it you can find the “formula” at other paint brands.
The thing I found about yellow paint is that you have to find one with a white undertone, rather than green—which you unfortunately discovered. The Sugar Cookie was a nice but not strong yellow during the day but trended toward white under low or no light.
Cathie from Canada
@Steeplejack: More advice — if you are painting something darker over a lighter original paint, have the darker paint tinted from a white base rather than the clear base that paint stores usually use. We didn’t know this when we painted an accent wall a darker colour and we had to paint FIVE (5) coats to get the wall covered without the original colour showing through!
One thing we can thank Sarah Richardson on HGTV for teaching us.
PIGL
FWIW, I love the yard’s new look, too. That particular colour would not occurred to me, but it really works.
Caracal
@sfinny: Agreed, good color (for a shed)

Unsalted butter. The best. Looks great, Cole. ?
