In my post yesterday and in tweeting, I asked for resources on protests and other ways to do something about the concentration camps that the Trump administration is setting up for immigrants. Many thanks to those of you who responded!
First, call your congressional delegation, and keep calling.
In New York City, art installations represent children in cages, with audio from the camps. Police are taking the installations down. They were developed by an ad agency for RAICES, which works for refugees. More about RAICES below.
Portland, Maine, has set up emergency shelters for refugees from Angola and Congo. They come through Central America and Mexico to the US southern border, where they ask for asylum from wars in their countries. I’d love to say contact the mayor and tell him he’s doing a great job, or even send money (they need it), but his page has a funny email link that doesn’t work for me. Maybe it’ll work for you. Or perhaps this could be an example for your community.
I haven’t done any more than check out websites for the following organizations. I suspect that they are all legit, and some, like the American Friends Service Committee, obviously are.
ACLU Immigrants’ Rights and Detention Page
American Friends Service Committee is planning to demonstrate against the Homestead, Florida, detention center this Sunday, June 16. They will livestream the action at their website. The website also shows other demonstrations they are organizing In Washington, Oregon, California, and several eastern states, including West Virginia.
In McAllen, Texas, a March to End Zero-Tolerance & Family Separation is planned for June 23. It is hosted by the Texas Civil Rights Project. Twitter: @TXCivilRights
RAICES (Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services), the organization sponsoring the New York installations, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that provides free and low-cost legal services to underserved immigrant children, families, and refugees. They have offices in Austin, Corpus Christi, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio. Twitter: @RAICESTexas
Annunciation House is a Christian group (Catholic, I think) that advocates for “those with no voice.” They are acting according to the Biblical precepts that others seem to have forgotten. “Accompanying the migrant, homeless and economically vulnerable peoples of the border since 1978.”
La Resistencia – Here is their description of themselves:
NWDC Resistance is a grassroots undocumented led movement that works to end the detention of immigrants and stop all deportations. Under the umbrella of the national #Not 1More campaign, NWDC Resistance supports and follows the leadership of those detained at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, Washington demanding better treatment and conditions and the stop to all deportations.
They have Solidarity Days most Saturdays 8-11AM and/or 1-4PM outside the NWDC.
Twitter Accounts
Witness: Tornillo. Target: Homestead (@TornilloWitness) A group protesting the Homestead, Florida, detention center.
@NoKidsInCagesUS doesn’t give a description of themselves. Retweets other relevant organizations.
@BobMooreNews and @TexasMonthly do excellent reporting on detention centers, particularly in Texas.

Thanks, Cheryl.

Thanks for this information.
I do believe a lot of people care. The same people care that have been outraged since we heard of children in cages.
It reinforces my anger towards them. My determination.
And, my resolution that I want nothing to do with muthaphuckas that purse their lips to defend this evil.

NKIC is run by RAICES Texas (see the footer of the NKIC web page).

Mailto links are not exactly common any more. I wonder when that web site was last updated. 1999 perhaps?

Here is a link to help the asylum seekers in Portland Maine
Support Asylum Seekers
As many have read in recent newspaper articles, there are many asylum seekers in Portland who are staying at our Family Shelter and overflow spaces, in addition to receiving support from the City’s Portland Community Support Fund. Many have asked how they can provide support. The City will use any monetary donations received to provide shelter/housing assistance and basic human necessities.

Thanks for this thread and the info in it, Cheryl and BJers.
Iran wag-the-dog thread up next? ‘Cause it sure doesn’t make sense that the Iranians torpedoed them thar tankers…
JanieM
No More Deaths link.
Someone may already have included this but BJ is behaving weirdly for me so I don’t think I’m seeing the whole thread.
TenguPhule
@Adam L Silverman: Every soldier and merc that’s working in those camps goes to the Hague for crimes against humanity.
Fuck US military legal exemptions.

Also, this op-ed by a Portland columnist has this link in it for an organization called Greater Portland Family Promise.
Omnes Omnibus
I would also say read up on the basics of asylum and talk to friends, family, and acquaintances about what is being done in our name. They may be low info because living their life takes all of their time, but they may also be appalled to find out what is going on.
Omnes Omnibus
@TenguPhule: You know that we are not a member of the ICC, right?
TenguPhule
@Omnes Omnibus:
Better late then never.
And preferable to my first, second and third thoughts about what should be done to the personnel responsible.

@Jeffro:
Torpedoes which consistently explode at the high water line without seriously damaging the vessels, no less.

@Adam L Silverman: isn’t this exactly what Twitter is *not* for?

@Jeffro: I went ahead and fill up my auto today. It’s coming.

I can’t think of anyone better to run the concentration camps:

@Steve in the ATL: So twitter has a purpose..hmmm

@Mandalay: I’ll be interested to see who else will hire the lying, sullen, sneer-face.
Cheryl Rofer
@lurker dean: @Adam L Silverman:
I saw that thread and decided not to retweet it. I don’t know that person or how to evaluate what she’s saying. Some of it seems to fit what we see in the news, but other parts go beyond and are more extreme. Which is not to say that the Trump administration isn’t capable of extreme. But extreme claims require extreme proof, and there’s none of it in that thread. She did tag several of the reporters who I find reliable, so I’ll wait for them to report.
People just get stuff wrong sometimes, and other times there are deliberate attempts to mislead. There was a thread over the weekend on how water cleanup plants are run that I almost retweeted, but I had the same sorts of reservations about it that I have about this one. The more I think about that one, the more I think there’s a real possibility that it was planted to provoke distrust in the water we drink.
If what’s in the thread you’ve linked is real, we’ll hear more about it. But I’ll wait for the reporters I have confidence in.
lurker dean
@Cheryl Rofer: i haven’t followed her for long but she seems accomplished and an honest broker. but completely understand wanting to hold off for more proof. i hope it gets more investigations going, i suspect there is a lot of bad stuff we’re not seeing. people seem to be coming out of the shelters sick, and some are dying, which is not normal at all.
eemom
Fuck New York’s “finest”. Do they have nothing better to do?
Those things need to be EVERYWHERE.

@Mandalay:
goddammit, i heard “sanders is quitting” and i got my hopes up.

@JPL:
according to the Prince of Whales, twitter has a porpoise.

Thanks, Cheryl.
I would also suggest writing to the FTFNYT and the WaPo… it couldn’t hurt. Maybe to the columnist of your choice as well. And of course to your local paper.

@Adam Lang:
Ethan is a really nice person. Portland is the best city in the country IMHO.

@Adam L Silverman:
Can the press really be kept out? Has the Red Cross tried to enter these camps?
MomSense
@Adam L Silverman:
Oh my god.
(((CassandraLeo)))
@MomSense: If that’s accurate, I think this country has pretty much gone full Nazi. Can’t see much ethical difference between forcing people into environments that are too deadly for people to survive and just outright gassing them. Either way I’ll probably be donating to RAICES later this week.

Why would Iran torpedo Japanese tankers at the very moment Prime Minister of Japan Abe is in Tehran on a diplomatic mission?
That would be beyond crazy on the part of Iran… and really stupid on the part of Iran’s enemies.
Also, how do “torpedoes” cause damage ABOVE the water line? Last I heard torpedoes are intended to explode under a ship, destroying it by breaking the structure by first raising the center of the ship, and then dropping it, snapping it in two. Not what happened.
This damage we all see on TV appears to be above the waterline, small holes resulting in a long lasting, telegenic fire in the waters.
I’m thinking Saudi swimmers planted a limpet mine, magnetically attached to the hull. Perhaps Emirates? Perhaps even Israeli special ops with support from the Saudis, Muhammed bone Saw managing.
Not that I’m a special operator, whatever that means. Well, wait, I AM special, and I do operate, I just created a lamb meatloaf, a little like kibbe, a special kitchen operation. I don’t think that’s what “special operations” means, tho.
One thing I am sure of, it wasn’t Iranian operations of any sort that damaged those tankers, they stand to gain nothing from such an action. You have to look at who benefits, which is Mike Pompeo, his coterie of anti-Iranian fascists, and the Saudi royal fascists. No one else stands to benefit from this action.
