Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

We are aware of all internet traditions.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

“woke” is the new caravan.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Friday Night Open Thread

There’s a shitload of breaking news about Trump and Ukraine and other shit, but it’s Friday night and it can wait until tomorrow. Not like anything is going to happen to him tonight.

The leaves are starting to change and drop here, finally, and it has been cool and overcast all day. I’ve had to start taking sinus meds again because this is the time of year I get allergies, when all the leaves drop and get wet and moldy. Time to prepare for the long dark months. Get the SAD lamp out of the closet, take the ac unit out, find the space heater, start taking vitamin D, and buying flowers once a week so I don’t get too depressed. The usual.

Anything exciting going on your ways?

I’m sitting here with my iPad watching a HS football game in Camas, WA. My daughter is in the marching band so i come to all the games. Friday Night Lights baby.

The football players are all wearing pink socks. The Komen thing has filtered down to the HS level.

Rest in Power to an Icon… Miss Diahann Carroll.

I’m really too young to know her from Julia, but Julia does have a special place in my heart. My own gran, who’s also 84 years old, is a retired nurse and had been a nurse for my entire life until fully retiring after having a stroke bout 10 years ago.

Julia was a Black woman, mother and nurse, all things my granny was at the same time. Also too, the first actually Barbie doll my mom ever had.

Rest in Power to not just a Black icon, but an American icon and trail blazer!

    1. Diahann Carroll, the first black woman in history to star in her own TV series, has died at 84.

We overuse the word legend these days, but calling Diahann Carroll a legend feels like an understatement.

Yesterday, made a cake which purports to be the world’s best chocolate cake . My test panel today (various coworkers) concluded that it was very good, but best in the world may be just a tad exaggerated. I’d agree. Still a good recipe though, and not hard to make even for a beginner at cakes.

I went hiking here today which I highly recommend:

The park is home to three campgrounds, sandy beaches, scenic sand dunes, an iconic lighthouse, wetlands, marshlands and forests. The park is situated between Hamlin Lake and Lake Michigan with several miles of beautiful shoreline along both lakes.

It’s feeling fall-ish here in Nor Cal as well, and for our family the change of season came with a dreadful respiratory thing. Three of us spent the day in bed and the third is completely fine and unaffected and currently jumping up and down incessantly on the downstairs couch, so go figure. Today I’ve been sucking on zinc and compulsively, miserably checking the headlines. Cole, I’m impressed by your winter self-care regimen. How do those SADD lamps work? I’ve always been sorta curious about getting one.

    Baseball stuff:

Does anyone have any idea what announcers Smoltz and Costas are talking about re the relative importance of home runs in playoff games as opposed to home runs in the regular season? They said that you don’t worry so much about solo home runs in the playoffs.

Did I slide into an alternate universe? Have I had a stroke? Am I on “Candid Camera”? What is going on?

@Hungry Joe: regular season they will stick with a pitcher. At least until the middle innings. Playoffs they go through a lot more pitchers. Especially in close games. That’s the only way I see the games as being played different.

They may also be pitching more for strikeouts in the playoffs. Risking more solo home runs trying to keep runners off base. But I don’t know.

No, I’m white and clueless I guess. I of course knew OF her. Just didn’t really know what she did other than the cameo stuff and talk show stuff when she was older. I didn’t watch much TV when I was young as my parents were religious conservatives so I didn’t really start watching TV or many movies until I left home in the 80s and by then it was the Seinfeld era. I looked at her filmography and it is huge but most of it I haven’t seen. I mean I never really even watched Dynasty. Much less 60s TV.

The weather was great today here in my little corner of NoVA. High of about 78°, and it felt energizing to be out and about. I think we are done with the hot weather. It got up to about 94° on Wednesday, but it has been cooling rapidly since then. It’s 55° now, and I had to close the windows a while ago because the breeze coming in was a little too cool. And yet you managed to miss the point of your own citation. Here, I’ll help you out:

Beulah was canceled at the end of the 1952-1953 seasons. From there, black characters in effect disappeared from television, with only small and occasional roles surfacing. The next television program to star a black woman in the title role would be Julia in 1968, starring Diahann Carroll.

In your eagerness to be a pedant, you missed the actual facts.
