Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

Everybody saw this coming.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

This post is in: Impeach the Motherfucker!

He was pretty awful a few years ago but I guess a rising Trump lifts a lot of mediocre boats :

This had to be one of the most successful failures — one of the most triumphant defeats — in modern political history.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) clearly failed in the stated aim of her four-week delay in sending impeachment articles to the Senate: to withhold the articles and the naming of impeachment managers until, as she put it last month, “we see the process that is set forth in the Senate.” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) didn’t reveal his impeachment resolution and made no commitment to bring forth witnesses or documents.

But Pelosi’s delay seems to have blunted any hope President Trump’s defenders had of dismissing the charges without a trial. Before the speaker’s gambit, McConnell pledged that “there will be no difference between the president’s position and our position as to how to handle this.” Trump is now calling for a dismissal, but Senate Republicans say they won’t allow that.

This is about as close as a beltway asshole who treats politics like sports talk radio — picking winners and losers for everything, focusing on personality instead of performance — is going to get to a nuanced perspective. When you only control the House, you’re “winning” if you’ve been able to leverage your power to make the Senate do more then they were otherwise going to do, and get some positive attention. Both of those goals were accomplished, even though we’re ultimately going to “lose” on conviction.

This happens to be a situation where the horse-race metaphor has political weight. Now McConnell doesn’t fully control what happens in the Senate, and that was his strong point.

@Cheryl Rofer: Wonder if Amash gets a spot. Also, there was talk Nadler was going to be one – TBH, he wouldn’t be one of my picks, even if he is Judiciary chair. We need folks like Schiff – folks who are articulate, clear-cut in how they speak. Ted Lieu would be a great choice, but what do I know.

It’s almost as if Nancy knows what she’s doing and all of her critics keep turning out to be wrong.

Did any FrontPager take on this?

    Patrick Marley (@patrickdmarley) Tweeted:

He charges three commissioners $250 a day each for defying his order.

I’m hoping for newly-installed Representative Hamala Karris, who looks as if she could be the identical twin sister of CA’s junior Senator. I heard she was pretty sharp.

    @rikyrah:

Didn’t Appeals put a stay on that, shortly after he issued his contempt citation/ruling/whatever? Or have they lifted that stay? [I don’t know, I haven’t been following it very closely.]

I don’t read him regularly, but enough to suspect the trump era has slapped at least some of the stupid out of Mr “Mad Bitch Beer” (wasn’t that it?). This seems like a pretty direct slap at his former sidekick– in that very video– Chris Cillizza, who was getting dragged from one end of twitter to the other for declaring Nancy Pelosi’s defeat yesterday.

Don’t know if anyone is still reading this thread or if you’ve all left for the shitshow upstairs (poor John!), but here are the managers. Good group.

Today, I have the privilege of naming the Managers of the impeachment trial of the President. #DefendOurDemocracy pic.twitter.com/Y2613Ni3pC
