First, a quick reminder that a LIVE reading/performance of Mustang Bobby’s play starts at 3pm today:
The performance of “A Tree Grows in Longmont” on Silver Tongued Stages starts at 3pm ET, and of course Medium Cool – where the play will be the topic of tonight’s discussion – will start at 5pm ET, as always.
Update on 5/4: the upload took longer than expected, so the play was late starting, and we missed the window for discussing the on Medium Cool yesterday. The play will be the topic for Medium Cool, just a week later, on 5/10.
Click play below to watch the play!
Here’s the thread from Thursday in case you missed it:

Woken up at 01:45 by my phone: for some reason the National Security Council texted all of Malaysia at that ungodly hour to remind us the Movement Control Order is still on. I already knew that, damnit! Can’t get back to sleep yet, so I played Mary Chapin Carpenter’s latest Songs from Home performance on YouTube. It was posted only a few minutes ago.
She seems to be a nice person. I like her.

Alas, I will be an Essential Front Line Grocery Clerk this afternoon/evening. If it’s available recorded when I get home after ten, I’ll check it out.
WaterGirl
@thruppence: Yes, it will be available on YouTube, even after the fact. Sorry you have to work!
something fabulous
i am here too! support your local (?!) playwrights! Waiting for it to load, or whatever…

Work beats involuntary unemployment, I think, though we take a lot of measures to lessen risk…

WhichOne’s Pink had some burps on their show Thursday night,
something fabulous
@raven: yep its whatever your local time is. mine says 12p.
raven
@something fabulous: how do day do dat???
WaterGirl
@raven: That’s ’cause you’re Eastern time and I’m central. YouTube knows where you live!
raven
My problem is that this is nappy time and me and the Bohdi are on the porch in front of the fan and slowly. . . .
Yutsano
Hey look a theatre production starting late! That never happens right?
raven
@WaterGirl: I put my “yo” in the chat but zip!
WaterGirl
Just got email from Mustang Bobby, aka Philip. Here’s a link to the whole series if you want to entertain yourself while we wait. It really is a live performance if it’s starting late, right? :-)
Suggest you open the whole series in a different browser window or browser tab, though, or you won’t know when this one is starting.

raven
@WaterGirl: no linky
WaterGirl
@raven: I just asked our playwright about that, i’ll let you know what he says.

@raven: This has to go better than that Sondheim thing the other night. Never did see anyone actually singing …
If the reading will be up on Youtube after the fact, might just enjoy that tomorrow. With a cocktail. Presumably after the noon hour, but …
WaterGirl
@raven: oops, fixed!
Mustang Bobby
It’s taking longer than expected for YouTube to load the film, so I apologize for the delay. The good news is that it will be available at any time once it is up so you can watch it at your leisure.
This happens a lot in theatre. :)
something fabulous
@Yutsano: ikr? ???
WaterGirl
@Mustang Bobby: Don’t forget the play is the topic of BG’s Medium Cool culture thread tonight at 5pm Eastern! So hopefully folks won’t wait too long to watch it :-)
BGinCHI
@Mustang Bobby: I should not have eaten that bucket of popcorn so fast.
BGinCHI
If the play doesn’t load in time, Medium Cool will be me and whomever, speculating wildly about what happens in it.
WaterGirl
@BGinCHI: Hey, I didn’t get any popcorn!
Steeplejack
@Mustang Bobby:
My playwright friend always says that the biggest thing she learned is that most of the drama happens offstage.
BGinCHI
@Steeplejack: Bullets Over Broadway.
BGinCHI
@WaterGirl: Checking the couch cushions…..hold on.

Noises Off.
raven
@Mustang Bobby: So is it just audio or a vid too?
Mustang Bobby
Update: the director is reloading it and it’s going quicker. I’ll keep you updated as it goes. Hopefully it will be done soon so we can talk about it at 5 with BGinCHI.
Mustang Bobby
@raven: It’s both a film and with audio. In Technicolor! :)
BGinCHI
@Mustang Bobby: Well, if it’s Technicolor I’ll put pants on.
Delk
Are Tea Dances still a thing? ?
raven
@Mustang Bobby: It can take some time for YT to render video.
SiubhanDuinne
@Steeplejack:
Somebody backstage is throwing up right now. Don’t ask me how I know this.
WaterGirl
@SiubhanDuinne: hahahahaha
SiubhanDuinne
@Delk:
Oh, how I wish! I’m ridiculously besotted by all those interwar traditions.
NotMax
@BGinCHI
Some pants scream for Technicolor.
:)
SiubhanDuinne
While we’re waiting, an off-topic question: is it Frankensteinbeck who writes as Richard Roberts (Don’t Tell My Parents, etc.)? I’m sorting my BJ authors in the Kindle app ?
SiubhanDuinne
@Mustang Bobby:
Stop fighting, you two! It’s new SOUNDMOVIE!!
BGinCHI
@SiubhanDuinne: Talkies will ruin the motion picture business.
WaterGirl
Okay, change of plans for tonight’s Medium Cool – we now have another topic scheduled for tonight, and we will talk about Mustang Bobby’s play NEXT WEEK instead.
That will give everyone a week to watch Mustang Bobby’s play.
Thanks, everybody!
NotMax
@SiubhanDuinne
Timefiller: another number from that odd-but-it-works Mikado.
Somewhere, Mr. G and Mr. S are slapping their foreheads and expostulating “D’oh” over never thinking of including shake your booty choreography.
:)
SiubhanDuinne
@BGinCHI:
Ay jist cain’t STANNIM!
I just cahn’t STAHND him.
Ay jist cain’t STANNIM!
SiubhanDuinne
@NotMax: That’s really great! There is (you will not be surprised to learn) an entire sub-genre devoted to Gay Gilbert and Sullivan.
The chorus here is terrific. So often it’s a thin and reedy sound. But this is rich and wonderful.
something fabulous
All right, mes ami(e)s, I gotta go get ready for my shift over at the rescue. Hope to catch it [yikes! so to speak!] sometime before next week’s discussion, instead. Stay well, all!
SiubhanDuinne
@WaterGirl: At this point, that makes sense. Thanks for your (and everyone’s) flexibility!
WaterGirl
@SiubhanDuinne: Okay! Good thing this was an Open Thread to begin with. :-)
NotMax
@SiubhanDuinne
If you poke around YouTubeville, there’s also scenes from the same company’s H.M.S. Pinafore and Pirates of Penzance.
NotMax
@NotMax
The staging of the opening number of Pinafore in such a limited space is especially clever, IMHO.
SiubhanDuinne
@NotMax: It’s great set design and very effective staging. Thanks for sharing these.

Hello, there,
I am a longtime lurker– back since Cole’s famous “you suggest Italian for dinner and your date suggests hubcaps and…” observation during the Bush (?) years. So, yeah, looooonnnngggtime lurker. Mustang Bobby, I look forward to seeing your play! I work at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (with, surprisingly, one of Cole’s childhood pals) where I run a program called American Revolutions: the United States History Cycle, https://www.osfashland.org/en/artistic/american-revolutions.aspx . And OSF also gave birth to a program of modern verse translations of Shakespeare. So if you are itching to see some great actors take on a new translation of Twelfth Night tomorrow, you can! In any case, take care of all yourselves… https://playonfestival.org/production/first-reads-king-john-with-hero-theatre/ (Yes, it says King John, which was great, but it’s still a Twelfth Night link…)
Miss Bianca
Way late to the thread (I was playing with my horsie in the beautiful sunshine) – was the live read all there is, or has it been recorded?
(*waves at Mustang Bobby*)
