Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

This blog will pay for itself.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

Today Was The First Day That Really Felt Like Spring

It was warm with a breeze, nice sun, and I got a ton done in the yard. It was nice. This spring has been unusually shitty with cold waves and more rain than usual, it seems.

I hope for more days like this.

We were in the 80s today, and it was muggy.  I don’t really call that spring.  But WV may be a little bit behind IL.  I like the 60s and 70s to last a long time.  80 is too hot for me.

I am selfishly hoping for a week of rain because I just put down grass seed.

Helped power wash the deck at my house. Total pain in the ass to do, but it’s done. The weather was beautiful

Wow, I didn’t leave the house today. I skipped our daily walk. I guess it was a mistake.

It was lovely today here in northern Virginia.  We spent most of the day indoors, but got outside for a while and it was swell.

Temperature Thursday morning: 22°. Temperature this afternoon: 84°. I could have done with a more gradual change.

Lovely here, too.  Spring is here at last.  ’Bout damned time, too.  And now we know it’s reasonably safe to go outside, too.

Nice ride across the NE Maryland countryside today. Pretty sure I wouldn’t do it, but it was pretty fun watching an Amish dude chasing his cows. Those cows were bigger than our Ford Edge.

This place seems to have a person for nearly every occasion, perchance any chemistry professors hanging around?

I have a freshman niece fuming at an online timed chem course and there is no actual human support available. She is not happy. She did come out of her room to eat, however, so that’s good.

As for spring, one thing I’ve noticed is how prominent the birdsong is in the mornings and evenings with much less vehucle traffic.

Almost 80 degrees up here in Manhattan, with a little bit of humidity. Ran in the morning riverside before everyone came out to disregard social distancing rules / spirit. Also got a case of 24 double IPAs delivered home. Yay me.

We got our first really warm day here, mid-80s.  I have been cautiously joking that the first 90 degree day we get will tell me if this is the year I have to get a new AC/furnace.  I have been nursing along this 27 year old system for the last several years.  With just a little heat today, I think I have my answer.  Will be calling an HVAC guy on Monday to get the first estimate.  Never had to do this before, so it will be a big learning curve.

Low sixties on the North Side today. Took the convertible out to run errands.  I most definitely did not take direct routes.

On the last leg I drove by Wrigley Field. They are running a food pantry from there. The line of cars was over 2 blocks long. ??

@planetjanet: Consider a variable speed air handling unit. More efficient and quieter, since it’s not all-on or all-off. Pricier, but worth it. I’m guessing that there will be a *lot* of zero-interest/delayed payment options as well. Carrier is well-regarded, but so are Trane, Mitsubishi (partners with Trane), Lennox, and Goodman.

@WaterGirl: WaterGirl, I’ve been watching my Northern Lights azalea closely on your behalf. For a couple of weeks now, the bud scales at the tip of each twig have swollen and been tossed aside by the emerging bright green leaves. Now there are even larger buds that I think will be the flowers!

    Hope yours is doing well!

We had our nice weather last weekend. Today it drizzled on and off, but I set out the red cabbage seedlings anyway because that’s perfect weather for transplanting and I must be turning into a Washingtonian or something because the locals don’t bother with umbrellas or, most of the time not even jackets

@stinger: Yes!  I have some blooms this week!  Part of one side is struggling – but even those sticks are starting to leaf out.  It’s a little sad overall, but it made it through the winter, and this is it’s first spring.

First they sleep, then they creep, then they leap.  Looking forward to next year, and the year after that.

We just got a big rain tonight :-( but if the blooms are still there I’ll put a picture in a comment in the garden thread.

@Eric S.: Here in rural Tennessee, those of us who still have the means have been donating dollars in plenty to keep these working to meet the huge demand. It feeds people AND it pays the local growers.

That’s right — the first few years are really about growing their roots, so they can withstand dry spells and cold winters better. I’ll hope to see a pic of yours tomorrow!

Weather today a bit too hot and sticky, with practically zero wind. Had to turn on two fans in the living area, creating a cross-breeze to get to something approaching acceptable that doesn’t involve dripping with perspiration unless sitting or standing stock still.
