Despite their best litigational efforts, the raging statewide ‘uptick’ in coronavirus cases (lines for testing, overwhelmed hospitals, deaths, truck morgues, all that tedious detail) made it impossible for the Texas GOP to hold its planned convention in Houston last weekend. So — at the last possible minute — they switched over to an all-virtual format, where the best minds of their leadership united to find solutions…
Like that was gonna happen. Actually, they threw simultaneous overlapping tantrums, and then went looking for witches to burn. From the local Statesman, “Glitches, turmoil dog Texas GOP’s virtual convention”:
The Texas Republican Party’s virtual state convention stumbled its way toward a messy conclusion Sunday that could leave its legitimacy in doubt.
“This convention will be challenged in court and should be challenged in court,” Amy Hedtke, who along with retired Army Lt. Col. Allen West was challenging Texas Republican Party Chair James Dickey for reelection as the concluding business of the convention, told the American-Statesman…
The party’s virtual convention was necessitated by the last-minute cancellation of a live convention in Houston because of the city of Houston’s public health concerns about holding a mass gathering amid a resurgent pandemic.
Scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the virtual convention, thrown together in short order, was troubled from the start.
Thursday’s opening session ran aground amid technical difficulties, leading to a day of dead air apart from a couple of statements from Dickey and former chair Steven Munisteri, and 30 minutes of prerecorded programming that included a four-minute message from Gov. Greg Abbott.
The party’s executive committee canceled Friday’s session to give it more time to work on a fix.
Saturday’s session was plagued by complaints about credentialing problems, although Dickey said those issues didn’t deprive the convention of a quorum or legitimacy.
Sunday’s general session, scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m., got off to a particularly inauspicious start, occurring even as convention committees — including platform, legislative priorities and rules — were still engaged in what would be hours of work before being sent to the full convention general session for debate and approval.
Earlier in the session, prerecorded video messages from Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and U.S. Sen. John Cornyn were locked in a battle with the platform committee deliberations for control of the Facebook livestream feed…
After the odd opening, the general session recessed to allow the committees to finish their work, with the rules committee finally wrapping up after 5 p.m. and suggesting the convention might not finish its work until very late Sunday or early Monday, if it could maintain a quorum.
Concern about disenfranchised delegates was widespread throughout the convention…
And in the end, their “legislative priorities” turn out to be voter suppression, forcing everybody else to live by the shibboleths of their own narrowly-interpreted Christianism, protecting monuments to treason, and of course MOAR GUNS EVERYWHERES!!!
One can only hope this fustercluck is a portent of the RNC’s national convention, because the rest of us could use the entertainment.

Thank God, an open (political) thread! I’ve been about to burst.
I turned on MSNBC a few minutes after 6:00 to check in with Ari Melber. They were showing Trump bloviating from his press conference, which I assumed was a rerun clip. Then I realized that it was live, and subsequently that Trump didn’t start until about 5:40—over half an hour late—and then ended abruptly before 6:10.
I watched as much as I could stand, and what enraged me this time is the complete failure of the press corps to do follow-up questions. The format doesn’t allow an individual reporter more than one shot, and in every case Trump gets away with spouting complete bullshit and then going on to the next—unrelated—question. Arrggh! I feel like (some of) these reporters spend way too much time crafting long, elaborate questions that are really going to “win the news cycle,” and of course they don’t, because Trump’s answer rarely has anything to do with the substance of the question.
Here’s what would win the news cycle: Today a reporter asked Trump why President Obama was to blame for homicide deaths in Chicago during his administration but Trump wasn’t to blame for deaths in his administration. (This was after a long screed by Trump about having his storm troopers ready to come in to quell the “murders and heinous crimes” in American cities “plagued by violent crime.”) Trump went through a litany of bullshit, saying that Obama was “asked to come in” and Trump wasn’t—“the mayor is a Democrat” (smirk)—and said that mayors and governors should be asking the feds to come in because of the terrible loss of life.
The next reporter asked some question—I think about China—that was such bullshit I can’t even remember it. What would have killed would have been if that reporter asked: “Why is this issue one that you say requires federal intervention when the pandemic, which is killing far more people across the country, is one that you said should be left to the individual governors?” Mic drop. I would love to hear Trump talk his way out of that one. Probably would have generated some “win the news cycle” quotes.
This goes beyond merely “fact-checking” Trump. Somebody needs to force him to explain his bullshit positions—which he is utterly incapable of doing. Won’t happen, but a guy can dream.
ETA: Oh, jeez. Ari Melber finally came on live, and in an intro to the “Joe and Barack” video he name-checked Peaches and Herb—pronounced “erb.” GTFO, Ari.

There are current fights in Texas where toxic asshole separated/divorced dads are trying to use the courts to exert their rights to over-rule HRT decisions by their ex-spouses and non-custodial children.
In other words, get your ass tossed out of your marriage because you are a toxic homophobic asshole and then go to court to try to overrule life decisions made by your non-custodial children and former spouse.
That’s what the legislature is trying to protect. Those “parent” rights
And I expect they are probably also going to try to extend this attitude to any LGBT children who are under state foster care.

I got lectured (yelled at) by an otherwise decent Christian about how his religion requires him to “testify” in public, and any interference in his ‘testimony’ about how only Jesus is God is ipso facto “suppression of his free speech *and* his religious freedom”. Not a local expert, but the TX foster care system is notoriously bad even by low U.S. standards — ‘traditionalist’ child abusers keep getting excused for crimes up to & perhaps including murder, while LGBTQ couples are forbidden to so much as apply for foster-parent status. Because JEEBUS! and also MAH TAXES!!!

In the US, it’s called “bundling”, in Canada, the UK and other Parliamentary Systems, “Ominibus” bills.
For both practical, and agenda related reasons, 100+ spending/budget approval bills are lumped together in one package. ( the record was a Con’s bill in Canada, where 1875 spending packages were lumped together into one 2,857 page bill). The idea is you get “all” the funding passed (good and bad) in one deal. The bad news is you get all the funding passed bad and good, in one bill.
HHS, if the Senate carries, ( which they will, after doing some line item veto’s on the good stuff) will be well funded, ( a raise if you want to call it that) into 2021.

Ok…who wants to hear bout my interview today?
First off, the parameters of my interview changed overnight and most of ya’ll aren’t aware. It was supposed to be a Skype interview, but it ended up being half in-person, and half-Skype call.
Background on that, I reached out to my Mgr and Immediate supervisor to disscuss with them where I was in the process and get interview advice. Both are supportive, but my mgr is VERY supportive. She’s an older African American woman, and she believes in mentorship of ANY young professional under her pervue, but she also sensitive to the challenges of being a “diverse” hire. I spoke to her yesterday morning. I thought she’d just talk to me for a few minutes, but she actually spoke with me for 30mins and even gave me pointers on the type of questions they will likely have, and on the type of questioner each interview person is! She went over the actual “script” they used when interviewing for the Supervisor position (she’s newly MGR, but she’s already had at least 2 new young supervisors added to her roster).
She didn’t realize I was doing the Big Boss interview, but when I told her she said “oh I guess that’s why…asked me to clear out the conference room for the in-person interview”?
I said “ah..my understanding is that this would be a Skype interview”. She said “oh. well I received an an email last night from…saying to reserve the conference room for Wed at 4pm. So you may want to check ur email and anticipate the change”
Sure enough I got an email and a text at about 1:30pm yesterday saying “Hi LAMH, this is HR. I will be at… in person for our interview at 4p tmw. D.. arranged for us to use the Conf room.” The email said the same and added that she’d be there in person and we “would dial in the other two Big Bosses” while in the conference room ??.
So I had to not only prep for a Skype-like interview, but also prep my outfit and appearance more than say I would fof a Skype only interview.

I got to the lab early and sat in the lab conference room for bout 7 min before the HR lady showed up
The HR lady dialed in the Houston Lab Dir and the Regional Lab Ops Dir and the interview formally began at about 4:05, ended bout 5:15.
The first 5-10 min were discussing my resume and past experiences and w/the Houston Dir discussing the role and what he’s looking for. He said he was def impressed by my Microbiology resume.
They asked me about my comfort with large production labs vs hospital labs.
Then they asked me if I had and questions about the position before we begin, and I asked for more details about this being a “2nd” supervisor position since they already have a supervisor and what he expected of the dual supervisor situation (2/4)

The actual “behavioral” question part of the interview didn’t start till bout 4:15/4:20. I saw that she had the script that my MGR coached me with, but she didn’t really ask all of those questions. She only really asked 2 out of the 5 and she did ask variations on the other questions, so the prep REALLY helped.
The Houston Dir had at least 2 questions, one pertaining to problem solving, which I answered ok, the other about technical QA which was likely my weakest answer. But I think I answered it well enough.
The regional Dir, who I’ve met before, but I doubt I made much of an impression, really only asked 1 scenario question: What would I do if me and the other supervisor didn’t see eye to eye and how would I handle it. I said something bout listening, compromising, but if I had, I would go up the official change of command as put forth. (3/4)

After 2 more “behavioral” questions (that I had luckily prepped for), they asked if I had any questions.
They’d already answered most, so the only one I really asked was what next in the process and if I move forward was there a plan in place for me to at least visit or somehow virtually see lab in person. They said they would def want to do that and they’d have to think about how they would do that logistically.
The final questions from the HR Mgr. was what my plan of action in would be say, my first 90 days or something if I was offered the position to get acclimated to the lab and the staff. This was a question I had prepped for the previous interview
asked me what training, or something do I think I would need to adjust to the leadership position. I told them that I am pretty confident in my technical skills and abilities, but as obvious from my resume (and I recalled mentioned by my Mgr. that I needed to strengthen) outside of my education and training, I’d be new to personnel management so training and/or mentorship in that area would def be welcome, even though I know I can handle it.
The final question was from the Regional Mgr., asked me if I’d been to Houston recently and she mentioned traffic. I said, I lived in DFW (I know she lives in Irving which is DFW) so I think I can handle Houston traffic if I had to.
One of the final, final questions asked was if I was offered the position how long I would need to relocate. I told them at least 1 month to give my current job time to acclimate and to get all my ducks in a row.
Anyway, I did the best that I could do and even if I don’t get the position, I def think I did my best (4/4)

The clip is just over a minute, so I can neither confirm nor deny what many people, many top people, the best, are saying that in a part they clipped out, he said, “I did so good, Daddy said I could have a third scoop of ice cream. Nobody ever got a third scoop. Not MaryAnn, not Freddie, or the other girl, or whats-his-name. Only me. Three scoops.”

@dmsilev: I learned from my older brother years ago (when we hit Toys R Us) that there were a few companies that basically sold cheap Lego knockoff sets, which he of course gave to his kids at Christmas. They no longer communicate, for whatever reason.

@Argiope: As I said, I’ve met one of them before, but as part of a group and she seemed nice enough. The HR lady, I’d never met I believe and the Lab Ops Dir who is over the lab ops where I work, was the other one on the phone.
The HR lady seemed nice and the Lab Ops guys seem nice as well.

I appreciate your views and that would be interesting, but reporters and their bosses love Trump’s hateful & idiotic bloviating. They do not want to pin him down to anything we might call the truth. Everyone from the NYT to local organizations have expressly disavowed “finding the truth” as a part of their mission.
The only way to win a Trump news conference is to ignore it. Reporters should not go, networks should not broadcast, people should not listen. It will never happen, but that’s the only way to win.

@Kay: The VRA includes a provision to release a jurisdiction from required pre-approval of changes to voting procedures IF they stay clean for 10 years.
The new VRA should apply this to ALL jurisdictions – equal dignitude of the states – and then in ten years only the recalcitrant/recidivist usual suspects will have pre-approval requirements. I know this from reading RBG’s dissent – pointing out that all the jurisdictions that were being ‘punished’ had earned it.
