The orange fascist waddled forth to pay his “respects” to Justice Ginsburg. It didn’t go well:
Trump at the court as crowd chants “vote him out” — it’s rare for this President to see his opposition this up-close and in-person pic.twitter.com/VEVkRHOkjM
— Kevin Liptak (@Kevinliptakcnn) September 24, 2020
As much as I’d relish seeing the pig perp-walked and thrown into the hoosegow, I’ve gotta say I like our chants better than theirs. And really, “lock her up” vs. “vote him out” sums up the difference between our two parties as well as anything could. There’s your choice, America: authoritarianism or democracy.
PS: I think Justice Ginsburg would have approved of Trump’s reception. I don’t believe in an afterlife, but if there is one, she’d be smiling down on the scene from The Good Place while searching in vain for her friend, the late Justice Scalia, who’s in The Bad Place. :)

I like Rod Serling’s vision of personal Heaven and Hell where both might be existing in the same room with the same people. I just had a mini-binge of personal-Hell episodes from Night Gallery a couple of nights ago. Most notably Pamela’s Voice with Phyliis Diller, in heaven, nagging John Astin, in Hell.
Any theories on why the Orange Idiot decided to pay “respects” to RBG, since he doesn’t have any respect for anyone and doesn’t do funerals? It’s not like he feels the need to drum up votes, he is not planning to win on those old-fashioned concepts like “campaigning” or “getting more votes than the other person.”
Kay
He must be horrified. He almost never ventures out of the bubble. He speaks exclusively to media, who he can easily dominate and has been for 50 years, or to his adoring crowds or his low quality, corrupt employees who are all afraid of him.

Your reference to Justice Ginsburg in Heaven searching in vain for Scalia (bc he’s in the other place) can’t help but remind me of a Twilight Zone episode that posed an intriguing possibility for what awaits Trump in the afterlife. In the episode, a newly dead wealthy man is being shown around the afterlife by a figure he assumes is one of the chief angels in heaven – who is pointing out the manner in which various other inhabitants have been rewarded by having their bodies reformed into being made from some valuable substance representative of what they most fondly craved in life. When the newly dead man asks the “angel” what new form he will likely be given – the response is “paper money in valuable denominations”, which the “angel” follows up saying that won’t likely play well with the man’s fondness for smoking cigars. The newly dead man is puzzled and distressed as he realizes his forecast new form might not be such a great thing, and wonders why he would be given such a problematic new form – and the “angel” replies: “This isn’t heaven – you’re in Hell”. I’m paraphrasing a bit, since it’s been many years since I saw the episode.
Perhaps Trump is in for an unexpectedly “interesting” but deservedly unpleasant ironic fate in the afterlife. For example, maybe he will be bound to serve as an impoverished orderly in a ward occupied by people who died of COVID and other terrible diseases.
Kay
@Ken:
Yeah, thanks but no thanks, Liz. Relying on GOP lawmakers to show some character and spine and “honor” anything is a fools game.

NEW YORK (AP) – President Donald Trump’s son Eric has until Oct. 7 to speak to New York investigators probing his family’s business practices, a judge ruled Wednesday, rejecting his lawyers’ contention that his “extreme travel schedule” on the campaign trail warranted a delay until after the November election.
State Judge Arthur Engoron said Eric Trump, an executive at the family’s Trump Organization, had no legal basis to postpone a subpoena seeking his deposition testimony under oath, concluding that neither the probe nor the court were “bound by the timelines of the national election.”
New York Attorney General Letitia James went to court to enforce the subpoena after Eric Trump’s lawyers abruptly canceled a July interview with investigators looking into whether the Trump Organization lied about the value of its assets in order to get loans or tax benefits. The investigation is civil, not criminal, in nature and investigators have yet to determine whether any law was broken.
James, a Democrat, said Wednesday’s ruling “makes clear that no one is above the law, not even an organization or an individual with the name Trump.”
A message seeking comment was left with Eric Trump’s lawyer, Alan Futerfas.

Short answer: Sure.
Longer answer: Wouldn’t it depend on how you define friend?
Someone who helps you bury the body is indeed a friend. They may also go to hell for hiding and/or abetting murder.
I was friends with a pretty devoted Evangelical. We respected each other and got along well and were friends, but his faith indicated I am hellbound as I do not believe the scriptures. So yeah, I can see a situation where you earnestly like someone and think they might end up frying on the shores of Tartarus.

For myself, I think contemplating the throne of God (one of the traditional depictions of Heaven) would pale after the first hundred trillion years or so. Maybe I could solve chess or go, working out all the plies by hand. Or if there’s room and rocks enough, try something more ambitious.

Robert Bausch’s Almighty Me, on which Bruce Almighty was loosely based, addresses that. There’s a scene where the guy who gets God’s powers visits the vestibule of Heaven. Not Heaven itself, but the place where people wait until they are ready to enter Heaven and a state of perfect bliss.

At the urging of some jackals here after I mentioned Peter Cook in Princess Bride, we watched Bedazzled (1967). It features Cook as Lucifer and Dudley Moore as a guy selling his soul.
Lucifer, in explaining why he rebelled against Heaven, pretends to be God and has Moore’s character dance around him singing praises nonstop. After a couple of minutes of that, Moore stops and says, “this is getting boring.”
“That’s exactly how I felt,” Lucifer replies.

Since this is an open thread, here’s a happy bit of pet news. Our 19-year-old tabby, Minxie, wandered away from our house on Sunday. She’s mostly deaf, partly blind and very skinny. Overnight temps dip into the 40s these days and we feared the worst when we couldn’t locate her. A kindly (but unknown) neighbor found her under a bush, dehydrated and weak and took her to the county animal shelter. I found a notice on the shelter’s found pets site on Wednesday night with photo. It was her! We picked her up on Thursday morning and she’s doing well and clearly happy to be home. In these days of continued bad news with COVID, Trump and overall Republican fuckery, this was a big dose of cheerful news that really lifted our spirits.

@MisterForkbeard: All he cares about (besides, of course, himself) is his base. He feeds their sense of victimhood with the “uncivil” hoots he got, and/or he’s seen as “paying his respects” as a counter to the fact that he jubilantly talked about her replacement as they pulled the sheet over RBG’s face.

@Mallard Filmore: Assuming they’d be saved in the first place, they’d definitely have an advantage in getting from the vestibule to Heaven.
One of the somewhat grim things about Almighty Me is that there is no Hell. If God doesn’t choose to save a person, they have no afterlife; they’re gone and even God can’t bring them back. Personally I’d prefer having a Hell, if it were there to give people one last chance (as in Niven and Pournelle’s rewrite of Inferno).

I, for example, will be voting for Joe Biden but I will also be voting for sheriff, in a hotly contested race that will have maybe 15,000 total votes and it will be tight. The two candidates are going to want the votes counted and they may not agree to the national GOP plan to litigate their way to victory. Multiply that by however many races.

Instead, I simply scanned the arguments pro and con, took note of which way H.L. was pointing, and directed my own vote 180° away from his stance with the certainty that I was on the side of the angels. I miss the sumbitch.

And how is Team Trump planning this incredibly complex scheme? They planned the pandemic response like this- Jared called a bunch of rich people he knows and put them in a room and told them to work their free market magic. That was pretty much the extent of the planning. Even the rich people in the room knew it wouldn’t work, and it didn’t, in fact, work. At all.

@hueyplong: Pelosi’s comment in both cases — impeachment initially and censure now — was “he’s not worth” the effort/trouble, which is an Interesting way to put it. It’s almost like she knows that with Trump, all the self-puffery and desperate craving for adulation are to cover up the core truth that he knows about himself but can’t bear to acknowledge because it would destroy him, i.e., his father was right about him all along: he’s worthless.
Immanentize
@Burnspbesq: yes, but that could take weeks to settle. Lawyer sends, “not appearing, taking the fifth” communication the day before the scheduled GJ date. @Betty Cracker: Organized crime food vs organized religion? The Methodists served up wonderful food at their dinners and potlucks when I was a kid, before everyone started worrying about dieting.

There was a great Twilight Zone about an elderly woman afraid of death. She gets a visit from a nice young man, played by a very young Robert Redford. They have a lovely visit, and in the end he reveals himself as Death, and she realizes it doesn’t have to be scary. At least that’s how I remember it.

@Betty Cracker: Exactly. Pelosi lives in Trump’s head.

My neighbors, registered Republicans are voting absentee. They also let me know that there is no way that they will be voting for 45. She didn’t need to volunteer that info but she did. So the T campaign can’t count on all R votes, even if they are absentee.
Ken
@opiejeanne: You are making the common mistake of identifying the Methodists as an organized religion.
(Just kidding, and speaking as one. If anything the UMC is an over-organized religion. Witness this year’s re-scheduling of the quadrennial General Conference because there is no provision in the Book of Discipline for remote meetings. We could amend the BoD to allow them, but that requires a General Conference…)

So funny. I just got a text from Biden campaign for “legal professionals” to volunteer.
I’ll volunteer but more importantly I’m pleased they’re planning and in Ohio, so that’s optimistic :)

@RedDirtGirl: “Nothing in the Dark“. Gladys Cooper played the woman and was excellent. There was a sort-of remake for the 1980s series with Janet Leigh which took the premise in a slightly different but still touching direction.

@Betty Cracker: i have to believe that Pelosi’s statement is a massive trolling of Trump’s narcissistic self. Since he wants to be the center of attention, be it good or bad, she removes the one thing he craves above everything else, making it about him. In fact, disses him as a lightweight and says so out in public, before the press… so she makes it a public point of ridicule and if nothing else, draws fire away from other damage he could be performing by giving him the publicly embarrassing wedgie.

@Quinerly: Esophageal cancer is or or has been the fastest growing type of cancer in Caucasian men in the last decade. My sister’s long-term companion died at the age of 50 from this disease. By the time he was diagnosed, it had metastasized to his brain. When that happens, for most cancers, the treatment is palliative only. His doctors would not recommend aggressive treatment because it would destroy the quality of whatever life he had left. I don’t wish cancer on anyone, but especially someone with young children.

@Kay: A formal rebuke does what, exactly? Parlimentary/House rebukes are for people who care about norms or people who pretend to care about norms and Trump is neither. Why play that game?

When you lose Carly Fiorina to the opposition, I think you’re nigh well and truly fucked.

I have happy pet news too. A lady who adopted two male labrador retrievers from a group through me more than 10 years ago asked me last week for help finding a new home for her now senior boys, because she’s going into assisted living after a health issue surfaced. Labs generally live only about 12 or so years, so they’re very old now and most rescues know they’re volunteering as basically hospice care so most rescues pass on that (as did mine because we have absolutely no foster space at all). But after beating the bushes in 3 states, I found a rescue that not only would take them but keep them together in the same home, with 36 hours to spare. I’ve been dreading telling my elderly friend that her dogs were not getting placed and now I don’t have to! Yay!
