Oops, it’s Savannah Guthrie who’s moderating the debate – I updated the headline. I guess Trump was just shitting on Toddler on general principle.

Also, Trump brags about ordering an extra-judicial killing by US Marshals. No link.

For some reason I thought the town halls were yesterday and nobody noticed. I guess I have hot takes to… look forward to… tonight.

NBC deserves what it gets for allowing Trump to get free time during the same time slot as Handsome Joe. Just as the ink dried on this dirty deal, Trump mocked and insulted NBC and Guthrie. Trump shits on everyone and so NBC deserves the humiliation. Too bad their execs are incapable of feeling shame for promoting this a-hole.

Biden should just postpone his town hall by an hour and then they can sit there with his audience watching Trump’s town hall together and commenting, mocking, and fact checking extemporaneously “Mystery Science Theater” style on live TV, and then after they’ve all watched Trump lie, they can move on to Biden’s town hall in response.

IMO, giving Trump air time will not help his campaign. Trump did what he wanted to in the first ‘debate’ and thereby persuaded most of the viewers that, yes, he really is a blustering, lying asshole. Getting him in front of an audience outside the Trump cult and in the real world is unlikely to help him. But we shall see.

Trump will provide an ample buffet of excrement. Now, a real troll move would be NBC saying at the last minute that Savannah has tested positive for COVID and has to be isolated and Joy Reid will be standing in for her. It would be fun if Trump had Rudy come with him to confirm the bogus Hunter Biden NY Post smear. They could explain and elaborate the story, and we could watch it evolve in real time. It’s already evolved substantially, but the story arc had endless possibilities.
Like, Hunter Biden, who the owner never met because he had to leave for awhile, could have actually bumped into Hunter Biden staggering down the street, and Hunter Biden said “I left some computers at your shop because I want to recover criminal emails that I want to hide”
And then, like, the owner realized something was wrong, and wrassled Hunter to the ground, but the owner fainted from the Hunter Biden drug fumes and ran off. And then a little old lady said… to the owner… that was that bad Hunter Biden, I bet he’s up to no good with that pizza basement buried out in the Ukrainian woods, I bet he’s trying to hide emails about that… on computers!
The Moar You Know
@MattF: I’d normally be upset about this save that it’s a fucking lie.
The Marshals so far as I can tell just did that all on their lonesome. Which is a wholly different kind of outrage.
Hilarious upshot: Trump just threw them under the bus by shining a spotlight on their criminal conduct so as to boost his “cred” with his violence-worshipping death cult.

Until now, it hasn’t been an issue for me, as I can’t think of a single show on that network I yearn to see. But I really wanted to watch Joe’s town hall tonight. @PPCLI: They (meaning HSD, certainly Tr, perhaps some in the FBI) decided to equate what they call antifa** with terrorists. This simplifies so much (all those rights and things) // especially since most in the US have ignored what happens to accused terrorists.
** and they apply the term broadly and dangerously; in Oregon, Tr and HSD and that CBP-associated group labeled or assumed protestors as antifa at first w/o bothering to prove anything at all
Pre 2016 election, I remember a court case (SC iirc, not sure) about a US citizen’s accused association with a terrorist-associated group (by sending a donation to a group overseas that did welfare work). It seemed dangerously close to application to civil liberties. I mentioned here that Trump and his SC court nominees could do serious harm to our freedoms of speech and association, but was told it wouldn’t happen. (weak bitter laugh)

My apologies. On re-listening to this, I should have been a bit more careful. Trump has told the same story a bunch of different ways in recent days, but in the instance today that I was referring to, though Trump is bragging about what happened, he appears to be saying that the US Marshals decided on their own to extrajudicially kill the accused, and Trump is evidently glad of it. Trump says “We sent in the U.S. Marshals and in 15 minutes it was over…They knew who he was, they didn’t want to arrest him and 15 minutes that ended.”

@WaterGirl: This is cool, because it insures that trump finds out.
The Washington Post now has a story on it. link

@Mary G: What I like best about those numbers is that they are just 2 and 3 points away from 100. It’s all the undecideds who can turn things upside down in a heartbeat.

If the powers that be at NBC has any spine at all, they’d absolutely fill the crowd with people of color and strident Biden fans, and then print up pointed questions, with followups, for those people to memorize and ask Hair Furor in retaliation for his shitting all over them at his infection event this afternoon.
They don’t have any spine, though, obviously, so as everyone else has pointed out, they will eat everything put in front of them, with a smile on their face.
I do hold out some level of hope that a town hall questioner gets medieval on him, calls him a liar to his face, or dials up the shaming that Dotard spends every waking moment trying to avoid.

So pleased that trump saw the Sasse ads. According to the Washington Post

@planetjanet: That was just for early-early voting. A lot more opened up yesterday, I believe. We’re planning to early vote at our local precinct in the next few days.

That’s from last August, the last time Sassy talked shit about cheeto.

@Jay: Thank you for clarifying. I was aware of the Marshals behavior, and that it was an out & out hit job. shitwhistle bleating that he ordered it is the new thing, and is obviously a lie, he’d a been bleating about it the moment it happened if it were anything resembling the truth.
Add it to the list of US institutions tainted by these two-bit soulless ratfuck criminals that will require mucking out when the dust settles.

The thing is, I don’t think the worst thing about this is that NBC is rewarding Trump for refusing to follow the rules, and basically making it a replacement debate where he doesn’t have to face the other side. The worst thing is that the purpose of his town hall is the same as his purpose in making the first debate unwatchable — to try to keep Biden from getting any message out at all. In this case, he’s doing it by demanding that his event be opposite Biden’s, which there is no legitimate reason to agree to.
Yeah, it’ll probably hurt him in the polls like it did the first time, backfiring because so many people are voting against Trump instead of for Biden. It’s still wrong and infuriating.
Geminid
@BruceFromOhio: the man whose killing Trump brags about was named Michael Reinoehl. He was charged with second degree murder for killing a right wing winger in Portland, and was shot in Washington by local cops acting as part of a U.S. Marshall’s task force. Reinoehl gave an interview to a Vice News reporter the day he was killed, and said he was defending a friend. Both shootings got a lot of coverage, and the local and national reporting is worth checking out.

On the general subject of television personalities, I greatly enjoyed this article in the Post this morning:
Fox News veterans face a hurdle in the job market: Having Fox on the résumé
I posted a one-word comment: Good.
I especially liked the part where some of them find themselves with few options and go to Newsmax or OAN.
sdhays
@germy: According to his tax returns, “The Apprentice” was the only real money he’s made for pretty much his entire life (since pretty much everything else either was a disaster or essentially converting Daddy’s money into his own). The Apprentice could have been made without Donnie Dump. He didn’t make it a success.
For some reason, they chose a guy who was actually hemorrhaging money and had just gone through a long list of bankruptcies and they not only paid him over $400m, they revived his brand so that he could scam some more.
StevetheWeave
How about at the last minute, NBC pulls Savannah Guthrie and substitutes Rachel and Ari Melber? Does Trump pull out because he’s scared?
JPL
@Baud: Will hugs be allowed, if so then most definitely.

@jl: I figured she just doesn’t care. I would get the same responses from my g.o.p. Senators and Rep. when I lived in Fla.
However, she is my elected Senator and it is my right to contact her and let her know how I feel.
If a petition or some other organized pushback arises, I will be onboard with signing it. I will also be onboard with showing up at her office, with a group of constituents and letting her know how we feel.
sdhays
@StevetheWeave: That would be funny. Have Savannah Guthrie there so that he comes in and gets on camera, and then have her leave and get replaced.
They’ll never do it, but watching him seethe and maybe even trigger a tantrum would be awesome.

Olbermann is all over the Sasse sass today.

@Redshift: it really is the ultimate talking-over-Biden, them letting him have a ‘dueling’ town hall of his own.
Everyone be sure to write/email/tweet at NBC and tell them they suck; other than that, just let it go – almost no one is watching, and we just need to run up the score where it actually counts.
(Personally I hope trumpov crows about higher ratings tomorrow and once again takes his eye off the ball about what’s really important)

Sasse has positioned himself as the “sane” republican who will arise from the ashes of trumpism, win the republican presidential nomination, and guide this country to a bright new conservative future.
JPL
@germy: There’s a little glitch, since he didn’t vote to impeach. When it comes down to it, he’s a coward.

The Thin Black Duke
@germy: As I said last night in another thread, lightweights such as Sasse don’t worry me. Charlie Baker does. Which is why, to my mind, it’s important to hold onto the Senate longer than four years, especially if Baker runs for President in 2024. I really don’t see Biden doing two terms, and I expect to see the toxic presence of misogyny rearing its ugly head again when Harris announces her candidacy.

@BruceFromOhio: “it’s called “an election.” Four years should be plenty of time to organize.”
With all due respect, a citizen’s duty to advocate for good governance does not stop after the election. I think that kind of passive, and overly obedient attitude towards democracy and our elected officials in this country is one of the reasons we are at the point of losing it.
I’m contacting her office to complain and demand that she resign, even if that signals an unfortunate lack of deference and decorum on my part. I guess I just don’t know my place.
Geminid
@debbie: The man killed by law enforcement Sept. 4 was Michael Reinoehl. He was wanted on a second degree murder charge for a shooting in Portland August 29. There is plenty of available reporting on both shootings if anyone is interested and wants to Google Reinoehl’s name. Reinoehl also was interviewed by a Vice News reporter the day he was killed, and he spoke about the earlier shooting.
jl
@Geminid: Apparently Trump’s many crimes are ‘old news’ now, not worth reporting.
News actors like Todd think it is more important to challenge Democrats with incoherent babble in order to fish up a ‘gotcha,’ get something ‘hot’ out there for balance, or some sort of posturing dumb show to pretend he is a journalist.
Wyatt Salamanca
Savannah Guthrie will eat so much shit it will make your head spin like Linda Blair in the Exorcist.

Repeating myself from earlier today, my preferred “twist” tonight would be for NBC and ABC to merge their programs and hold the two-candidate town hall originally scheduled. Ideally they enforce time limits and mute the candidates when it’s not their turn to speak, including when the town hall participants are asking their questions.
Geminid
At the time both killings were big news in the Portland area, and got some national coverage. They are back in the news now because trump claims credit for something he did not do. He’s bragging, and possibly trying to bait the anti-fascists.
