No. The bar the extremely online pundits set is that Trump not bite an electric fence like he did in the first Biden debate.
He did not do that.

I am truly baffled by all the adoration for what a fabulous job Welker did.
She allowed Trump (and less often Biden) to respond endlessly with “10 seconds”. She had really stupid right-wing questions like “Joe, why aren’t you pushing the Democrats to pass a relief bill?” Though she did press Trump a few times for something that resembled a coherent answer to her questions.
Maybe Chris Wallace set the bar so low that it was easy for her to walk over it. But I think the overall debate was less a function of her influence, and more a combination of the mute-able microphones and Trump trying really hard not to repeat his first debate performance (with mixed results). He was calmer, but spewed an even more endless stream of nonsense than usual.
I guess somebody had to get the credit.

There’s a WSJ editorial written by a lying Trump promoter and a WSJ article saying they reviewed records and found no connection to Joe Biden.
The Intercept reporter refers to that as a “dispute”.
John S.
@debbie: Oh, I think Joe did great. But that had nothing to do with Welker’s fabulous moderation, and everything to do with Joe being prepared and having command of the facts.

An important thing to know about CNN’s post-debate focus group of 11 North Carolina “undecided” voters, where they unanimously thought Biden won the debate and 9 of the 11 were now leaning to voting Biden – is that the setting was in the college town of Davidson, NC (and Davidson College, a high-caliber relatively liberal town). Had CNN instead recruited voters from Moorseville, NC, a town just 6 miles north of Davidson and home of many NASCAR racing teams and drivers – the reaction of that different set of “undecided” voters would likely have had a very different Trumpier skew.
Don’t get me wrong – I agree with the evaluation of the Davidson focus group – Biden was better in the debate and the clear better voting choice. Rather, just cautioning y’all from elsewhere that this was not likely a good representative slice of purportedly “undecided” NC voters. The sample would have been much more accurately reflective of a critical slice of NC voters had CNN gone 6 miles south to Huntersville, a more typical northern suburb of Charlotte than Davidson.

Some pundit on MJ that I do not know said trump did well in the debate because it was his best ever performance in the campaign this year.
What a great bar they give him. grrrrrrrrrr
Kay
@Baud:
Their original complaint was also wrong. We found out last night NBC asked Rudy for the hard drive (he hasn’t produced it) and the WSJ was (obviously) reviewing the business records.
So it wasn’t true that news outfits “wouldn’t” look into it. At the time Glenn Greenwald and some of the Intercept reporters were bleating that no one would look into at least 2 news outfits were looking into it.
What they wanted was for the smear to be promoted prior to an investigation. That they didn’t get.
cmorenc
@Baud: Frankly, I’m not sure how widely beyond the nearby vicinity of Davidson CNN reached out to recruit their sample from. When a MSM network presents such focus groups, it would be helpful to putting the responses in context if more was revealed about how they drew their sample
BTW: I meant that Davidson is a high-caliber academic school and relatively more liberal-leaning small town; somehow my language about that got mangled a bit in my OP. My older daughter went to college there.
Betty Cracker
I was wrong about Trump. I figured he’d be even more feral than last time because he’s more desperate now and is seething with rage because the Hunter Biden thing isn’t blowing up like Clinton’s emails did. I thought he’d talk about that nonstop. But while he did occasionally stray into topics that are unintelligible to anyone who doesn’t live in the Fox News cinematic universe full time, he did so less than I expected.
A friend and I were texting about the debate, and she was panicky about it — she worries that it could be a reset for Trump because all the political analysis will focus on how Trump didn’t smear poop on the wall like last time so… presidential!
It’s not out of the question that this could happen, but IMO, “New Tone Trump” was way too little, way too late. And every time someone brings up the change in Trump’s demeanor, it invokes the original face-plant and reminds everyone of why they dislike him — he’s such an asshole. That’s a win for Biden.

@John S.: I agree with you John. The bar is very low for the media congratulations to the moderator. I happened to have NBC on and both Chuckles and Mrs. Greenspan heaped praise on their colleague.
I watched an hour show on Prime during the debate, then caught the end. It was scheduled for 90 minutes and she was just hitting climate change around 90 minutes in, so a big fail on simple timekeeping.
These debates are worthless. There has to be a better way. Let the candidates have total media access one night to say what they want; if we want to do the back and forth, have them in separate places or something. The gladiator style is worthless. Hoping President Kamala does it differently.

@OzarkHillbilly:
The Wikileaks philosophy, the reason Wikileaks didn’t need to follow journalistic checking and safeguards to protect the accused, was (allegedly) because Wikileaks was just a mechanism. They steal the information, they post everything they robbed. The accused then knows what they have on him. They don’t edit – just dump. Okay that was bullshit but that was the original justification.
America’s Mayor didn’t do that. He either took or received the stolen communications and then released some of them in a manner timed to harm Joe Biden. Hunter Biden does not know what they will release and claim is his. He doesn’t know what they have.
Here’s what would happen to Hunter. He claims one or more of the emails and texts. The following week Rudy releases doctored texts or emails or photographs. Now Hunter would be in the position of disclaiming those. That’s the trap. The Intercept wants him to walk right into it.

Our Media Betters weigh in:
Kay
@different-church-lady:
It flies in the face of the whole “transparency is the only regulation needed” philosophy.
Rudy isn’t transparent. For the thing to work both sides have to release everything. They are asking for this situation- “we release which parts we feel like releasing, you, the accused, verify it, and then we release the other parts we feel like releasing, edited and timed to be as damaging as possible”
No one would go along with this. It’s wildly unfair. It’s like a criminal prosecution with no rules and no protections for the accused. They have to either use the set of rules that come with journalism or use the set of rules that come with prosecutions. They can’t operate in the middle of those two things with no rules. That’s not fair to the accused.

The majority of republicans won’t answer polls for many reasons. The pollsters contact the same people over and over and usually only the dems respond.
So there we have why the polls are wrong & trump is winning.
LurkerNoLonger
@John S.: I’m 41, I can see that happening.

We are doing “contactless” lit drops for Dem candidates here in central VA, and the weather’s nice, and it’s been so good to get out again at the doors.
And even though we don’t knock: the voters see us and come out and ask questions about voting procedures. So good to be talking to them again, even from a slight distance.
Mr. Kamala, Doug Emhoff, was here Wednesday to speak about healthcare access. He seems like a wonderful low-key guy with a sense of humor, and makes a short but effective speech. He seems to be enjoying the campaigning.
It’s always kind of cool to see the big Secret Service SUVs roll up.
And now, we will give them better government executives to protect! Classier people. Who care about the SS’s health, too.

So I watched. I think they keep asking him back, convinced they have found something he has no answer to – and he wins again.

I couldn’t take looking at Trump’s face so I left the room about 10 minutes in and listened to it from the next room. So I missed all the faces people are talking about. What I was hearing was infuriating enough. Managed to scare the dog by yelling “Liar!” at one point.

I guess you never noticed that we’re all liberals here.
different-church-lady
@Ceci n est pas mon nym: I did the opposite: watched the picture with the sound off. Biden was smiling and laughing at Trump’s accusations, and Trump looked like he always does when someone else is speaking, like he wants to attack the other person with a fork because he’s so bored.

I don’t watch Fox, just see occasional clips that come across my feed ….
Has anyone else noticed that their makeup is decidedly more orange than it used to be? I am not joking, I think they are trying to normalize Trump’s look.

I just looked at that video again – trump pushes her in the back as he throws away her hand. No woman deserves to be treated like that in public (or in private). Little wonder he has lost the housewives of the USA.

@Betty Cracker: I live next door in Pembroke! I am amazed he is coming here. But my native american people here have gone all in on trumpism. (I dont understand it either..other than racism) You really have family nearby? My condolences..LO
ETA-That the lumbees have gone all in on Trump is actually a good sign..we’re a lagging indicator..always late to the party…

@TS (the original): I thought it looked like he pushed her, also. They are both filled with hate and anger. They deserve each other.
TS (the original)
@WaterGirl:
It was quite a shove. And although they surely do deserve each other, given she was wearing extremely high heels & has not been well, she could have ended up on the floor. … And he would have laughed.
PPCLI
@Jeffro:
You heard it! Thank you! I thought I was losing my mind. I heard him say “good” just after a mention of child separation, and I thought that would make his appalling remarks on child separation (“sure, we ripped them away from their parents, deported the parents, and have no hope of finding most of them. But the children are being kept in good conditions”] the top headline.
And I haven’t heard reference to that “good” anywhere. I thought I was losing my mind or my hearing or both.

Glad to see up top that someone mentioned the talk-time disparity. Not a huge gap, but indicative of how Kristen Welker kept letting Trump respond and re-respond to everything, going well over his “10 seconds” and getting the last word in way too many exchanges.
I don’t get the “winner of the evening” praise for Welker. The debate went better than the previous one, but much of that was baked in by the rule changes. And some of her questions were Miss America pageant material. As I said last night, she was a C+ at best.

@Baud: It sounded like “good” to me at the time. But then I start saying to myself that it must have been “go on” because no one could be that kind of monster and then I remember that it is Trump and “good” seems likely but even he can’t be that awful so it must have been “go on” but then Trump….
Steeplejack
@Baud:
“Go ‘head.” Ambiguous enough not to make a big deal of, especially given the surrounding carnage in the rest of the debate.

@Omnes Omnibus:
Let’s go to the video tape!
I didn’t hear it in real time. I just want us to be accurate, even though Trump deserves unfairness.

He said good. That’s exactly what it sounded like and what his facial expression looked like.
PPCLI

@Baud:
I can’t wait to watch this “subsequent moviefilm”. It’s for sure going to be nonstop potty talk and I’m fine with that.
Omnes Omnibus
@Steeplejack: @Baud: Steep might have it. But I still wouldn’t rule out “good.” That might just be my expectations based on Trump’s previous actions and statements leading me astray.
Baud
@Omnes Omnibus: It certainly wouldn’t surprise me in the least if he said “good.” A front pager should post the clip and then we can take a poll.
PPCLI
@Baud:
@Baud:
I agree that we should check the tape. The worst thing would be if discussion of Trump’s openly sociopathic attitude to the children he made fatherless and motherless would get obscured in a debate about one incidental word.
Baud
@MomSense: I might watch the Borat thing after we know we’ve won the election. Too stressful now.

@MomSense: Me too. I watched him on Kimmel this week and I think the pandemic is hurting his ability to be obnoxious. I’m not sure we needed another Borat (see Anchorman sequel), but will watch it. I liked his Ali G and Borat stuff. Bruno, no.
His commitment level is off the charts. Still recall one of scenes from Borat involving his #2 in a bag at the dinner.
He could probably do some really interesting stuff as himself.

Aaron Rupar probably has it. He does a good job of slicing and dicing Trump’s appearances into bite-sized video clips with explanatory text.

Checking in to say I thought the asshole said “good”. But I suspect if he did the Lincoln Project would have it in a commercial before lunch today. Also, I didn’t record the debate.

@chris: I think there is probably a North Carolina electoral truism: As go the Lumbee…so go the Lumbee. But I’d be interested in how the vote turns out November 3rd. Most rural counties seem to be 2 or 3 to one republican vote to Democratic. I heard a good Biden ad aimed at rural voters when I drove across eastern North Carolina. If the Democrats can turn 3-1 into 2-1, and 2-1 into 3-2, it can make a difference in a state like North Carolina. Or Kansas.
Ceci n est pas mon nym
I heard “good” as well. It doesn’t really matter. Some percentage of non-jackal listeners will have also heard “good” and felt the same visceral shock we did. And that will peel off a few more. Even though the MAGAts will also be saying “good” around their breakfast tables today.
Biden was very specific. On reopening he said “these are the things we need to happen and these are the ones that government has to subsidize because it’s too much of a burden for schools and small businesses.” Trump just had “we have to reopen. Open everything. It will be fine. Teachers won’t get sick. Plexiglass in restaurants? Pshaw.”
It was clear Trump was all mouth noises and Biden was well-thought out and in command of the facts.
But I’m permanently scarred by Reagan-Carter 1980 where all our media betters declared that “there you go again” was just as good as knowing stuff.
Omnes Omnibus
@Baud: Agreed. He obviously thinks taking refugee kids from their families and keeping then in camps is good whether he used that word to punctuate the discussion. That one thing alone is enough that Trump and everyone else involved in it should be pariahs. That isn’t policy differences, errors, or anything like that. It is straight-up criminal inhumanity.
Baud
@Omnes Omnibus: IIRC, Biden used the word “criminal” to describe it.
I think the kidnapped kids had largely been forgotten about, so I hope people are reminded (and react with the same horror we feel).
Omnes Omnibus
@Baud: Biden did call it criminal. And he was right.

Maybe it’s my dialect, but I sometimes use “brain” and sometimes “brains”. (My dialect is not zombie.) In Baud’s original it would be brain: “Don’t drink as much, your brain will thank you”. But in other contexts, and still referring to just one person’s organ, it would be brains: “His brains were splattered across the wall.”
Skepticat
I agree, and you may well have heard me screaming “Use the button!” when she let Chump ramble on. Joe restrained himself when he started to reply out of turn, as liberals seem to do, all while Rethuglicans refuse to be constrained by the rules/law/truth/civilized behavior. I don’t want to see us lower ourselves to their level, but “they” see it as weakness and take it as permission to ride roughshod over truth, justice, and the American way. It is to weep.

Anybody know the timing of when appeals for campaign cash stop? I’ve gotten at least a dozen texts screaming about how WE ARE GOING TO BE CRUSHED BY A RED TIDE just this morning since coming into the office. From such various candidates as Biden, Harris, Kelly, Hagar, Shapiro, Lamb and another several freshman House reps. I’m tapped out until payday next Friday (unless I want to quit eating, drinking wine and putting gas in my car, which I do not), so I’m guessing they’ll be done by then?

A nice peaceful action this morning as the Pences’ dropped off their ballots in Indianapolis (listing the Governor’s mansion as their address. Indiana law says if you intend to move back to Indiana you can vote here. A little unclear how the address thing works, I think. He obviously doesn’t own the Gov. residence. Though I guess he could say he plans to run for Governor again and live there. Or Mrs. Pence could.)
Anyhoo, this: “Annie Gresh, 42, of Noblesville, was among a handful of protesters dressed as handmaidens outside the City-County Building. She wore a red handmaiden dress with a long skirt and a bonnet.
“We are so against this administration and we want to turn the tide,” Gresh said. “Instead of a blue wave, we want to see a blue tsunami.”

I got so tired of explaining to white BernieBros that, no, per my experience living in Chicago in the 90s, this was not something that was rammed down society’s throats, that in fact BLACK COMMUNITY LEADERS were among those pushing for this legislation, because the drug and gang violence was so off the hook in their neighborhoods.
I could never get them to take that notion seriously.

@Betty Cracker: I think the reset only brought back into focus the sheer evil of putting kids in cages. Trump has never owned it that explicitly. His narcisstic nonsense about his “big beautiful health plan” is also going to make some people realize that there’s really truly no backup plan. The only significant negative effect of Biden’s oil comment is that it’s triggering people’s PTSD from the Comey letter. But I think helps shore up some of the dummies who vote Green Party, especially if Trump tries to paint Biden as a radical environmentalist now. I also think Biden’s super clear promise on citizenship for undocumented people will help with turnout.
