Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

All hail the time of the bunny!

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

People are weird.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

I am pretty sure these ‘journalists’ were not always such a bootlicking sycophants.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

The ‘Rona Hits Home

This post is in: COVID-19

FacebookTweetEmail

In the past 24 hours, I have learned of 8 people in my town of 300 who now have tested positive for coronavirus. The closest are the neighbors across the street- she is on day seven, her husband just got a positive result yesterday.

So, like all the other small towns and villages in red states, home crap home now has an outbreak. I am fine, and my parents are fine and still under lock and key, although I do have the same damned head cold I have had for ten days (it comes and goes), but that is an every year occurrence this time of year and my pulse oximeter reads 99% with a pulse of 60 and my temp is consistently 97.5. Speaking of, this made me laugh because for me it is true:

The 'Rona Hits Home

I can handle physical pain like it is no one’s business (I mean I did drive myself to the hospital with an arm shattered in 20 places), but I get a fever or have a cough and am convinced I have lung cancer or am dying.

I had a cold last year that wouldn’t go away. Seriously, I had periodically recurring symptoms from November up until March. Then I broke down and used a netti pot and it cleared up pretty quickly. I have found that it helps with my allergies as well.

I do however boil the water first in a tea kettle. Odds you get something nasty from your tap water are low, but not low enough for my taste.

I don’t know if this has been mentioned yet, but Chuck Grassley, 87 years old, now also has “the Rona”. And things are so bad in Iowa that Dollar Store Sarah Palin’s Dollar Store Sarah Palin, Gov. Reynolds, has actually issued a mask mandate. He’s fortunate he’s in Washington and not back in Iowa. The case counts are just astronomical, almost everywhere in the country.  We are rethinking not just our plans for Thanksgiving but even the basic stuff like how often I go to the store (might go back to 2x/month until February).  My son’s soccer tournament for this coming weekend is about to get canceled, too – his coach is pressing the league to cancel, calling it a “Covid petri dish” and he’s basically right.

The Michigan refusal to certify event is infuriating. Notice it’s Wayne County that’s being denied. Wayne County is Detroit, but it’s also the close in suburbs, including the Grosse Pointes. The R member (chair?) of that electoral certification board is from Grosse Pointe Woods. She says she’d be open to certifying parts of Wayne County other than Detroit.

How can people look at this crap and not decide Rs are trying to undermine democracy? To steal the election they lost?

Stay safe, Cole. This is hitting home in a lot of places.

My sister has been keeping us informed on an elderly lady, kind of a formerly family, in-law sort of situation. This lady was Covid positive a couple of weeks ago. Sis says “she must have caught it at the grocery store because she doesn’t go anywhere but the grocery store and to church.” Okay. A few days later her husband, older and with serious respiratory issues, gets it. “He must have caught it from her (likely) because he doesn’t even go to the store.” But he goes to church, which is a no instrument, singing church, in case it matters. Turns out my young relative and her family, who are currently living in the same house as my seventy something sister, are attending church with these elderly, Covid positive folks. And lo and behold, as of a few days ago a whole bunch of people in the church are Covid positive, too.

Did she catch it at the grocery store and spread it to the congregation, or has it been quietly circulating in the church for weeks? Don’t know, doesn’t matter. The moral of the story is, stay the hell out of crowds, esp. indoor, singing crowds. And wear your damned masks. I’m actually considering double masking since things are heating up here, and seems like everywhere else, too.

I know how you feel, Cole.  My allergies and chronic sinus problems are playing havoc on me this year, leading to headaches, runny nose, sneezing and coughing.  People look at me funny now at work, when they rarely noticed my troubles before.  But the university tests staff and faculty who are approved for on-campus work about every three weeks, so I know it’s just a typical fall for me.

I really want this to be over.  These stupid mother fuckers who think they are superheroes whose magic power is being impervious to deadly viruses have made that impossible.  Ugh, so sick of all the shit.  Wish I could be like  John Oliver and just blow up 2020.

The county I live in (Crow Wing) is the most bitch red county in the state of Minnesota. Our cases went from 400 a month ago to 2,603 as of today, and I can’t help but think those rallies tr*mp had over in Bemidji and Duluth in the last days of the campaign had something to do with it, since our local redcaps followed them around like deadheads. All the administrators of our area hospitals are super concerned because their ICUs are maxed out or really close. We’ve already had cases of people getting helicoptered out to be intubated in the Twin Cities or Rochester because all the ventilators were in use.

@John Cole: last week, I started having a sinus drip right before going on my birthday trip this year.

I’ve had it happen before, where I had a bit of a sinus drip a night and it turns into this bad nasal ingestion.  Sometimes the nasal congestion goes away quickly, but other times, the nasal congestion goes to my ears and I have this ear congestion as well.

Once it became really bad and I ended up with a dual ear infection.

This time, the ear congestion lasted longer than before, but it got better, but thanks to all the coughing, I’ve got laryngitis pretty bad for a couple of days.

Usually, I just wait it out and I go to work after the sinus congestion lays off a bit, and just wait patiently for the ear congestion and laryngitis to go away.

I knew it wasn’t COVID, just the same sinusitis I always get round this time.  Now because of COVID precautions, I couldn’t go back to work until I had a negative COVID test.

Even thought I knew it wasn’t COVID, I was soo worried that the test would be positive even knowing what I know about the virus.

So the negative test was great, but for the past 10 days while I was waiting for the test results it was nervewracking.

I went back to work yesterday.  I still have laryngitis, so I sound worse than I feel, but I’m glad to not have COVID

So my major advisor from my undergraduate days died on Friday. He was extremely generous with his time and intellectual resources with his students.  He was only 53 and they say he died of a heart attack in his sleep. But the thing is, he was an extremely active man who did a lot of kayaking, river rescue and cross country camping trips in his spare time.

    I kept thinking of covid.

    I’m still in shock.

Meanwhile: I’m trying to talk sense into my mother who really wants to go “help” her friend prepare Thanksgiving dinner. Sure there will only be “6 people.” She’s over 65. My dad is over 70 with sleep apnea, blood sugar issues and a whole host of medical problems. He’s itchy so he went back to work at the hospital even though he’s retired.  My brother goes out to eat every other day and will literally do everything he’s legally allowed to do.  He went to a Bucs game last week.

Meanwhile, the most risky thing I’ve done since March is have my eye doctor treat my fun auto-immune condition that likes to flare up under stress.  I get groceries and medications. That’s about it.  Maybe I’m the one who is nuts.

Yeah, there’s been quite an outbreak in my county, too. We suddenly have 50 cases – 17 in the past seven days alone. I am steeling myself to watch the footage of the Board of Health meeting from this afternoon, wherein all the Republican county officials who were just fine with allowing superspreader events to take place – and are only just now getting on board with universal masking up not being a liberal hoax – are going to spend 2 1/2 hours bleating, “how did this HAPPEN? What are we gonna DO?” (Narrator voice: Nothing to the purpose).

Ugh. Meanwhile, my theater is still closed. At this rate, I will be amazed if we open up at all in 2021. : (

@zhena gogolia: you can go on the quest direct website site and  order an Active Covid nasal swab test (as opposed to the antibody test that detects if you had it in the past). No doctors order needed. Costs about 130$  you can chose to have it sent to you to do youself at home or you can pay for the test and make an appointment. I plan to do this and have already ordered my home test. Just was informed by my work that a second person so far this month,  has tested positive in my building. While I have been told we would be informed if we had been near the positive person, I am literally all over the building every day. I would rather take a test than keep wondering.

    […]

As Karen Tumulty quips in the Washington Post, it sounds like IT WAS A PERFECT CALL, THEY’RE TRYING TO IMPEACH HIM OVER A PERFECT CALL! (We are paraphrasing Tumulty.)

Raffensperger told the Wall Street Journal he and his staff chose not to take any of Graham’s “advice” because “we have laws in place,” by which we can only assume he meant he did not want to COMMIT CRIMES like the senator appears to have been suggesting.

Oh well, we guess President Biden’s attorney general can get to the bottom of all of it, should they be so inclined.

My colleagues and I are no longer sharing the office space, we’re rotating days so that only one person is in the office at a time, I don’t love that from a personal security point of view.

I took SuzMom to the grocery store (Aldi) this evening around 7PM. It was not very busy, which was the general idea. I’ve been trying to do any shopping at off hours. I like Aldi, but I usually alternate my shopping between there and Trader Joe’s. I think Trader Joe’s has been doing a better job with the Rona protocols. @Bill Arnold: It is all complete bullshit.  What they are talking about is that the roster of signed voters does’t exactly match the number of counted ballots in a specific precinct.  Which frequently happens for a variety of innocent reasons.  Someone could sign into a polling place and then see the line and decide they don’t have time and just blow it off.  If they didn’t follow through and cast a ballot the numbers would be off.  Likewise, counting machines could have spit out a ballot or had two stick together or something and the count could get off by one the other direction.  It isn’t any actual evidence of fraud.  Just the small amounts of imprecision involved when millions of people vote.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: I worry about bizarre low-probability scenarios a lot, but I don’t understand how this “force it to the House” strategy is supposed to work!

I’ve repeatedly checked the text in the 12th Amendment about this. It says that to win outright, you need a majority of the votes of electors appointed. It doesn’t say you need 270; that’s just how many you need if they’re all appointed. If they’re not, the threshold goes down. You can’t prevent a majority by just keeping them from being appointed!

(Unless, of course, you end up with an exact tie, but that’s not what they’re talking about.)

  211. 211.

    Kent

    November 18, 2020 at 12:05 am

@Matt McIrvin:  It also assumes that the House will just roll over and certify the coup attempt as valid.  Pelosi can just withhold certification of the electoral college result if they find it illegitimate and the resulting stalemate will produce acting president Pelosi on January 20 when Trump’s term expires.

That essentially happened in 1876 when there was an electoral college standoff and Congress eventually kicked to to a commission to resolve.  The Republican Hayes ended up winning essentially by bribing the Democratic House with the offer to dial back Reconstruction.

Bottom line.  The House only has to let it go to a vote of state delegations if it wants to.  Pelosi and the Democrats can stop it before that happens.

Thirty seconds later, he pitches a fit and goes inside to get the manager with about ten people behind me in line.
A few minutes later the manager comes out. I take off the mask, show him that it’s taped and they finally let me in. I immediately run into a shopper wearing a bandana. I started using white tape after that.

My friend said the “crew members,” or whatever they’re called, are good about safety procedures even out of sight of the customers, and the company keeps them informed with all-staff meetings when policies change or someone tests positive. (They had two back in March-April, none since then.)

The other two stores I go to, the substandard Safeway and the super Giant, seem to have pretty good procedures and customer compliance. I still try to get in and out as quickly as possible.

Disgusting, Despicable, grossly inhuman. That’s my short rant. I don’t want to hut=rt my tentacles typing the longer rant.

@Nicole: oh it’s true, gloriously true. Rudy said something like “I imagine it means transparent” and the Judge is “no, it means not transparent”. i listened to the second session after the break and just cringed/laughed through the whole thing. not a good sign when the Judge goes “Are you writing this down? That’s what lawyers do, they write things down.”
