Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Giving up is unforgivable.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Trumpflation is an intolerable hardship for every American, and it’s Trump’s fault.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

T R E 4 5 O N

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

The revolution will be supervised.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

#BREAKING WV Delegate Derrick Evans has been taken into federal custody.

He’s charged after allegedly entering a restricted area of the US Capitol with rioters Wednesday.

A woman saying he was his grandmother came out telling us to leave as he was put in a car. #WSAZ pic.twitter.com/wK2RqFcaF7

— Chad Hedrick (@WSAZChadHedrick) January 8, 2021

For those of you who can’t watch the video, she tells the reporter that she knows he has to do his job, but her grandbabies are in the house. Then she says “he’s a fine man, and thank you Mr Trump for inviting a riot at the White House”. I’m sure she meant the Capitol — she was clearly upset, as anyone’s grandmother would be if their grandchild was being hauled off by the FBI.

I thought this little snippet is an interesting example of how the relatives of some of these rioters are going to take their arrests. She sure wasn’t blaming Nancy Pelosi or Hillary Clinton for hurting his feelings.

Also, we’ve got some real brain geniuses here:

Oh, and he had two other guns on him, one in each pocket. https://t.co/k2nzXUGAl0

Just to be clear, I didn’t post this to make fun of this woman. I think it’s really sad that her life is going to be upended because her grandkid did something dumb. I was honestly surprised that she blamed Trump.

I did, however, want to make fun of the shithead who thought the cops would just let him drive away his bomb-laden truck.

Also, I want to make fun of this, too, but this page will stop loading if I embed every tweet about how a dummy got arrested today:

@Four Seasons Total Landscaping mistermix: Me too. Good for Grandma for laying blame where it belongs.

I was going to post this in an open thread, but it fits better here:

Things l learned on Twitter today about casualties among the Capitol Coup seditionists:

    1. The woman who was trampled to death during the sack of the Capitol was carrying a Gadsden flag (Don’t Tread on Me).
    2. The 55-year-old who had a heart attack while sacking the Capitol supposedly triggered the fatal coronary event by zapping himself with his own taser (possibly in the nuts while stashing the weapon in his waistband, but I can’t confirm that detail).

I’m trying to be a better person this year. 2021 is making that really difficult so far.

PS: Just caught a clip of Biden taking questions after a news conference. When asked if he thought the Dems should impeach Trump, he said he was focused on HIS job, which was the right answer, adding that Trump has always been unfit to be president and it’s up to Congress to decide whether to remove him. Biden also said he wants a thorough investigation into the coup (yay!) and that he’s glad Trump isn’t coming to his inauguration.

    From the hated FaceBook:

    Hillary Clinton
    3h ·
Ten years ago today, Rep. Gabby Giffords was holding a constituent meet-and-greet outside a Tucson grocery store when a man walked up and shot 19 people. Six people were killed, including a nine-year-old girl. Gabby was left in critical condition.

With luck and the help of talented doctors, Gabby survived. With hard work and determination, she has healed. And with her fierce commitment to making the world a better place, she has devoted herself over the last decade to ending gun violence with Giffords. Her husband and partner in this work, Mark Kelly, was sworn in last month to continue the mission as a U.S. senator from Arizona.

We’ve all gone through so much over this last year. It can be hard to see a way forward. But Gabby put it best in today’s New York Times:

“Through hard work, intention and commitment our country will overcome the rage of those who stormed the Capitol with Confederate flags and symbols of hate. We draw strength from the bravery and determination of our first responders and frontline workers. They inspire me. We will move ahead together as I did and still do every day—one foot after another.”

The elections company Dominion Voting Systems, which has been at the center of many of President Trump’s conspiracy narratives about the 2020 election, filed suit Friday against one of the loudest amplifiers of those false stories.

The company sued Sidney Powell, a lawyer who previously worked for the Trump campaign and who has spent much of the past two months claiming Dominion rigged the election and was somehow tied to the Venezuelan regime of the late Hugo Chavez.

None of those claims are true. Dominion was founded in Toronto and is now headquartered in Denver; its machines have been used in American elections for more than a decade. Chavez died in 2013.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, and in it Dominion asks for more than $1.3 billion in damages. Powell’s “viral disinformation campaign” has destroyed the value of the business, the lawsuit says.

    We love to see it.

I’ve been wresting with what we do to recover and achieve some kind of closure on this mess.  Every time I start to write out my thoughts I get exhausted and can’t finish.  While we are sorting this all out we still have to deal with the pandemic and trying to change minds and behavior.  And I’m sure the information that the Biden/Harris team have about the coup end the state of our government is 1,000 % more terrifying.  We have to support them because this has to put enormous mental and physical strain on them.  Then there is the fact that the members of both houses of Congress have just experienced serious trauma. It affects people differently and unpredictably.  It is going to add extra difficulty to their work.  Trauma can disrupt  processing information and regulating emotions.

the Unibomber story is a sad one.  I know his brother, David, who figured it out and ultimately turned him in.  He was the one who helped negotiate the printing of the manifesto in the NY To ones for his brother to give himself up.  The deal was that the US would NOT seek the death penalty, but once they had Ted K. in custody, they reneged and sought the death penalty.  Brother David has been on the anti-DP circuit since.

@Immanentize: I knew about that.  I am very conflicted because, on the one hand, the FBI lied their asses off to David, promising psychiatric help and a bunch of other shit they had zero intention of ever providing.  That was bullshit.

On the other hand, I also know one of his victims, who was a world class cellist who got both his hands blown off by one of the bombs.  As a string player myself, I can’t think of a worse thing to do to a musician.

The way it’s worked out is OK.  If he rots and dies out there in the Supermax I’m OK with that outcome.  If they end up strapping him to the gurney and giving him a few shots I sure as shit won’t be out front protesting.

    @Betty Cracker:

Another for the list – Ashli Babbitt apparently tweeted “Nothing will stop us” the day before before being … um … stopped by something.

I don’t rejoice in her death, but I’m glad it wasn’t someone I respect and I can only hope that some of the idiots who are lucky enough to escape prosecution actually learned something from her death. Big ask, I know.

Manchin is far and away the best Democratic Senator we could possibly get from that benighted state until someone develops a cure for BSI (Bat Shit Insanity) & forces its entire population (including a whole passle of my cousins) to take it. He’s been there whenever the party has needed him. And he’ll be there whenever Chuckles Schemer** needs him again as the 50th vote to get the issue to Kamala for tiebreaking.

** Sweartadog, my smartass phone useta correct his name to this.
