Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

“woke” is the new caravan.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Let’s finish the job.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

So many bastards, so little time.

As long as McCarthy is Speaker, the House will never be in order.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Christ It’s Almost Fucking Over

A visual representation of how I feel after four years of Trump and a year of pandemic:

Christ It's Almost Fucking Over

I got the very welcome news that my parents will be getting their covid vaccinations in a few weeks. Just a couple more weeks, and they will be safe and able to resume their lives. It’s such a relief. I’m so glad they listened to me in the early days and took it seriously, and stayed at home and let me do things for them rather than have them go out and expose themselves to danger.

As I noted elsewhere, I know they aren’t going to live forever, but I will be god damned if this virus or by the callous disregard, incompetence, and malignant negligence from the tumor in the White House.

I hope he is in court every day of the remainder of his life before he finally chokes on a double cheeseburger and oozes his way off this planet.

It’s not really over – even if you are vaccinated – you still can be a carrier. So we all need to be careful even afterwards.

oh man, the crappy old cars I and my friends have owned.
Mid 90’s, my friend in Chicago needed something bare minimum he could get around town on. He had a very tight budget and bought a wreck of a compact, hatchback – I think is was a Nissan maybe – with hundreds of thousands of miles on it.  the interior was pretty much ripped out back to the framing and it reeked of gasoline.  Bought it for $200 maybe?  Everyone made fun of him wasting money on that car.  It not only lasted for a couple of years, he ended up selling it for more than he paid for it.

Grief.  But anger.  I can’t think of a President (I was born under Eisenhower) who would have been that bad.  Bush bungled Katrina, but he finally let the experts do their thing.   Clinton would have felt our pain and rolled up his sleeves to get something done.  Obama handled N1H1 (12,000 deaths over 2 years), but thanks to his hard work,  we had a vaccine and an approach that meant people were able to get on with their lives-I even worked in a barn of a building and didn’t have to fear.  NIxon, LBJ, even Reagan would have at least let the scientists do their thing.

Never have I had to spend 10 years (actually 10 months) in my house like this-never going on a bus, to the store, wearing masks even when I go out into the hallway).  I want my ordinary life back.  But I know I will have to wait until the adults get to dig into the files and start giving the orders.

For the last 4 years, he’s been a princeling who has been able to do just about anything he wants while funneling tons of campaign and government cash into his businesses. Because he’s president, he’s been treated with respect and catered to, even by people who privately despise him. His businesses are in worse shape than they were when he ran for office. He has made a LOT of enemies. His allies are being punished for being associated with him. Most of the people who worship and adore him are people he feels are beneath him. He is obese, old, probably had a stroke not that long ago, and is losing access to some of the best healthcare in the world. Trump will be around for 10 years max, but likely half that.

    @CarolDuhart2:

it takes about a month-and even then I would wear a mask until the rest of the idiots get a vaccine too.

It’s hard to figure these things out.  So I thought it might be to discuss when and for what reasons, to stop distancing/masking.  Here’s my take — when all the following are fulfilled:

    (1) you have the vaxx shots, and the full period has passed (typically, 2wk since second shot, 6wk since first)

    (2) AND community spread has stopped in your wider area.

    (3) and the case rate has dropped back down to where the public health authorities say that the pandemic is passed.

Why these criteria?  Sure, so you won’t die (#1).  But the rest are about making sure that anybody who hasn’t got the vaccine, will continue to mask/distance.  If vaccinated people stop masking, some others who were doing out of social shaming will stop, too.  And that will lead to deaths.  Once community spread has stopped, once the case rate comes down, this means that the rest of the population who didn’t get vaccinated, or are immunocompromised, can’t catch the bug.  Also, the vaccines haven’t been tested on children, so they’re not even recommended for <16yo kids.  Another reason to wait until community spread stops.

In a way, this is a really, really easy test.  Just wait until, basically, the case rate plummets.  When we’re back to case rates like this past summer, and the vast majority of the population is vaccinated, we can start taking off our masks.

That’s certainly what I plan to do.

@Spinoza Is My Co-pilot: I think normalcy won’t return until everybody has had a *second* vaccination, for the new higher-transmission strain, probably toward the end of 2022. Even then we will be in a nastier world than before – there are too many nutjobs to eradicate, and even people who’ve had it can catch it again and die. We will have to maintain a higher level of precautions than we did in the Before Times. Some things are probably gone forever, like open buffets.

Things will ease up some towards the late spring but we will still need to be masking and outdoorsing. We might be able to run schools again if we can get improved ventilation and have students eat outside/at home/separated.

It’s still an open question whether or not the mRNA (Moderna, Pfizer ) vaccines are “sterilizing” and will block transmission.
The clinical trials measured only symptomatic cases, and noted an almost complete absence of severe cases as a side effect. The bet is that they will block transmission, but there is concern that the nasal epithelium might not get enough of the antibodies, and that that’s from where the virus mostly spreads. (From memory. As penance I’ll find primary sources.)
Until this is clear (it will be studied through contact tracing), it would be good to continue to wear masks as “source control” blocking forward-facing unfiltered exhalations.

Probably, since the vasculature delivering antibodies will be common to all (human) vaccine recipients. The mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccines are remarkably effective, so less effective vaccines might have more trouble (with spread by vaccinated people) if this is indeed an issue.
But we don’t know yet. I’m an optimist and am betting that they will block transmission. (And will wear a good mask until this is clear.)

Bill, you’re adding another good reason.  I didn’t mention this because, to me, it should already be enough, that by wearing a mask I show others that they also need to wear masks.  Until the outbreak in my area is *actually* suppressed -and- I have a vaccination, that’s what I’ll do.  There’s ample evidence that people wearing masks causes -others- to do so as well.  And that’s good enough for me.  But you’re *absolutely* right to add that another reason to wear a mask, is that we don’t *actually* know that being inoculated means we can’t infect others.

@Bill Arnold: It’s not established whether the vaccines are sterilizing, but a British study of regularly tested healthcare workers found that those who had COVID antibodies, indicating they’d had COVID, had a 3/4 reduction in catching SARS2, and a 7/8 reduction in symptomatic disease. Certainly much better, but not sterilizing. I think it’s unlikely that any vaccine will be more effective at producing immunity than an actual infection, so it’s very unlikely any will be fully sterilizing.

WASHINGTON — The time has finally come for President Trump to find a permanent space at Mar-a-Lago for his $50,000 room-size golf simulator, not to mention the 60-inch television he proudly displayed above the dining room table, his collection of Brioni suits and the first lady’s matching Louis Vuitton luggage she has hauled around the globe.

I see, in some Resolutions of Town Meetings, a Remonstrance against giving Congress a Power to take, as they call it, the People’s Money out of their Pockets, tho’ only to pay the Interest and Principal of Debts duly contracted. They seem to mistake the Point. Money, justly due from the People, is their Creditors’ Money, and no longer the Money of the People, who, if they withold it, should be compell’d to pay by some Law.

All Property, indeed, except the Savage’s temporary Cabin, his Bow, his Matchcoat, and other little Acquisitions, absolutely necessary for his Subsistence, seems to me to be the Creature of public Convention. Hence the Public has the Right of Regulating Descents, and all other Conveyances of Property, and even of limiting the Quantity and the Uses of it. All the Property that is necessary to a Man, for the Conservation of the Individual and the Propagation of the Species, is his natural Right, which none can justly deprive him of: But all Property superfluous to such purposes is the Property of the Publick, who, by their Laws, have created it, and who may therefore by other Laws dispose of it, whenever the Welfare of the Publick shall demand such Disposition. He that does not like civil Society on these Terms, let him retire and live among Savages. He can have no right to the benefits of Society, who will not pay his Club towards the Support of it.
