“Three cadets at the U.S. Air Force Academy who have refused the COVID-19 vaccine will not be commissioned as military officers but will graduate with bachelorās degrees, the academy said Saturday.
Academy spokesman Dean Miller said that a fourth cadet who had refused the vaccine until about a week ago, decided to be vaccinated and will graduate and become an Air Force officer.
In a statement, Miller said that while the three will get a degree ‘they will not be commissioned into the United States Air Force as long as they remain unvaccinated,’ He added that a decision on whether to require the three to reimburse the United States for education costs in lieu of service will be made by the secretary of the Air Force.”

We really do seem to be on the downslope of the BA.2 wave here in the Northeast. I think how badly it hits a given area tends to depend on how many people didn’t get Omicron in the last wave.
I think the CDC should be recommending a second booster for everyone just to reduce transmission–the vaccines obviously don’t prevent it entirely but the antibodies have some effect.

‘@NotMax: My position on monkeypox hasn’t changed — yet.
From current reports, a whole lot of (mostly) men who’d never been vaxxed for smallpox took the ‘covid is over’ opportunity to get in some of the hot-party global adventuring they’d put on hold for the last couple years. Some of them came back and developed a rash on their faces and/or swimsuit areas, and quite sensibly went to their doctors for treatment. The doctors, primed to alarmism by the pandemic, got a little OMG WE’RE DOOMED about a (usually!) very mild virus, mostly because they’d never seen it before, and it was *supposed* to be confined to Darkest Africa.
It certainly *could* get worse, and quickly. But *right now*, my personal biggest fear is that the usual suspects will start trumpeting that ‘we’ need to lock up all them Gayz RIGHT NOW, cuz lookit the gross Biblical plague ‘they’ are unleashing on innocent white Westerners!1!!!
Biden’s not wrong to respond to questions, but I wish he’d make the point that if those reporters were so hellfire worried about Global Plagues, they could do some actual reporting about the GOP Death Cult blocking funding for dealing with the *actual* pandemic at this very moment.
Wag

I donāt know where youāre getting your information about monkeypox being a mild disease from. The cdc website includes this quoteā ā The illness typically lasts for 2ā4 weeks. In Africa, monkeypox has been shown to cause death in as many as 1 in 10 persons who contract the disease.ā

Smallpox was not as deadly as Covid either but people died from it. Having been born before most vaccines I can still remember having a lot of illnesses that have mostly been eradicated by the use of vaccines that limit overall exposure and therefore effectively block transmission.
Vaccines do not prevent you from being exposed and actually transmitting the disease, they make it far less likely to get a hold in your body and therefore less transmittable, so the disease does not spread like wildfire. They also make the disease a hell of a lot less likely to affect you as badly or even kill you. But it takes a very high percentage of a population to stop a very transmittable, rather deadly disease. Fucking Covid morons make that not work near as well and kill, in this country – millions.

I’m still dreading flying. I didn’t, once vax’d and while most people masked most of the time (10% noses out at DEN most times I flew the past year; plenty of people eating or drinking slowly to avoid masking in the gate areas…)
But: I drove Mpls-CO for a 3 week visit, and that sucks too (16 but-in-seat hours each way, hotel each way halfway).
And while we looked into to, driving Mpls-PDX is not gonna happen this year (that’ll be Delta, but the same free-for-all applies).
We also sprang for First a number of times to avoid being in a set of three seats with a rando. But that was during low demand and F would cost like 90 bucks extra (or some miles) per person. Worth it.
Fares now are thru the roof.

“Republicans are turning thumbs down on Covid funding”
Traitors.
We get emails from the high-school principal letting us know of students and staff who have tested positive. This past week, there were 32 students and 2 staff members who tested positive.
Back in December and January, we had about 50 combined students and staff testing positive each month, when Omicron was rampaging. So we’re getting clobbered worse than during the winter.
I’m sure one big factor is: up until the end of February, we’d had a mask mandate in place. The Board of Ed decided to scrap that at the beginning of March, so of course hardly anyone wears masks at school anymore. So instead of Covid-positive kids mostly keeping their germs to themselves at school, they’re sharing with other students, and with staff.
Hello, exponential growth. And fuck you, Calvert County Board of Education.
