I hope I don’t rub anybody the wrong way by posting something orange today–because I would really like to introduce you all to Momo, the new kitten at chez majeur! She is an orange tabby of some persuasion (classic?), and 5-6 months old.
After moving to Denver, we had a lot more space, so we were finally able to get a second cat. We got her in early February, but I decided I’d wait until she was well-integrated into the household to introduce you all. Superstition, I guess. Samwise hated her at first, which was to be expected but still not fun for anyone! Now they more or less get along. She wants to play a lot more than he does, which earns her some hissing, but they generally tolerate each other. If we leave them alone we can be confident the only damage will be to furniture.
On the Denver front… things are great! Hoping to be around here more (apologies in advance), now that my six months of home-purchase-and-move-anxiety are over. It sucks not to have friends nearby but that’s okay, we’ll make new ones. The house itself is really nice, although it’s a little jarring moving from a prewar apartment with thick plaster walls into new American construction with gypsum “walls”.
The amount of space we have now feels almost embarrassing, though it’s really not that much, 1600 square feet plus an unfinished basement. But I’m writing this from the writing desk in the guest bedroom, not to be confused with my computer workstation/standing desk in the office, which is not to be confused with my husband’s workstation downstairs. What a bounty! God, we were living like peasants before.
And we have a fireplace! Or should I say, the cats do.
And I guess I can offer up some St. Patrick’s content, too. I made this soda bread recipe for a family dinner the other night. It turned out really well! (I used these high altitude adjustments and substituted dried cranberries for raisins.) It did need a little longer in the oven than the recipe calls for, but fortunately I bake with a thermometer. I think it was around 205 degrees when I took it out–which is maybe a little hot for a soda bread? not sure?–but it was perfect, if you ask me, although as is typical for my cooking it could have looked a little nicer.

Happy Friday, everyone! Open thread.

Welcome Momo!
Oh, that little pink nose is adorable.
Princess Leia
That soda bread looks fantastic!! As does your new pad. Momo must be a delight!!!
BigHank53
Orange girls are great. We’ve shared the house with several. The first one was our neighbor’s cat, but she’d wander in the basement door if it was open, up the stairs, through the cat flap, and check to see if there were any leftovers in our cats’ food bowls.
Amir Khalid
Glad to know that the upheaval of moving from NYC to Colorado is successfully concluded, and you have all that space now. If your soda bread tastes good, then it is good. Momo’s a cutie.
martha
Oh Momo, you are adorable!! And MMM, welcome to Denver and I’m glad you’re getting settled (and figuring out high altitude baking). We’ve been here for 8 years (Morrison area) and love it. I still have a few challenges with cooking at altitude, but practice makes perfect LOL.
Scamp Dog
Welcome back!

We are waiting with bated breath for a Scully status report—and pictures!
RedDirtGirl
Congrats on the successful move and new pet integration. Momo looks like she is planning an attack in that photo.
phein63
You’re good. Not only was Fat Freddy Scat orange, but the best cat in the world was also an orange stray with one tooth and no claws. IMHO.
NotMax
Hmm.
Depending on the language, momo can be translated as
• a type of dumpling
• a maternal uncle
• a king of Carnival
• a breed or genre
• a buffoon
• a moron
:)
MazeDancer
Such a sweet face. Congrats!

@NotMax: 桃, “peach”

Well *I* am not jealous AT ALL. I mean, happy house with two man-caves, two cats, and a fireplace. EVERYBODY has THAT, right?
Anne Laurie
@NotMax: From context (cat + MMM’s an anime reader) Momo = ‘peach’ in Japanese.
Welcome to the blog, Momo!
(And welcome back, MMMM — you know ginger girl cats are comparatively rare, right?)
Joy in FL
What a beautiful kitty! So glad things are good in your life.

All in good time.

I missed the post(s) where you announced you were leaving NYC for Denver. Congrats on the new house!
Major Major Major Major
@Anne Laurie: yes! About 20% of the population. Also, another fun fact I learned, all orange cats are tabbies, since ‘orange’ overrides the ‘not-tabby’ gene!

Excuse my ignorance but how do insert a picture
zeecube
Kool kat. I’ve never had luck making soda bread. They always turn out looking like cow pies. OTOH. yours looks delish.

He looks a bit like the Momo of The Last Avatar fame. Cutie pie!

Only front-pagers can insert a picture. You can include one with an email to a front-pager (see “Contact Us” at the top of the page) and explain why you would like it to be posted.

Momo is adorable! The cats look pretty companionable in front of the fireplace.

I live off Yale and Wadsworth in Denver – been here since 1979 and never even considered living anywhere else. You get 4 real seasons, dry air (I loathe humidity) and a backyard called the Rocky Mountains 😉..those kitties are cutie patooties!!!

ARGH! Never have I been happy with any batch of Irish Soda Bread 🍞 I have made. Le sigh.

Oh & Momo is adorb.

I demand someone post a picture of a green cat!

Speaking of which, can anyone here teach me how to move a photo from an Android phone to a Windows 11 laptop?

Time to summon the cats by turning on the fire! While we watch Scream 4 for some reason.

@Amir Khalid:
When I want to do this, I “share” the photo with myself via email, then open the email on my Windows machine and download the photo.
Can’t wait to see photos of Scully!
MazeDancer
@Amir Khalid: Email it to yourself.
ETA – Wolvesvalley already suggested the easiest way.
Major Major Major Major
@MazeDancer: you can also send it to yourself on messenger or discord or what have you, if you have those.

@Amir Khalid: I usually just use Gmail on my phone (inside a browser):
Fire up Gmail on your phone
Compose a new message, Attach the picture. (You don’t even have to “send” the email – it will be in your Drafts folder. Or send it to your Gmail account.)
Open Gmail on your Winders machine
The mail with the attachment will be there (in your Drafts folder, or in your InBox).
There are probably more elegant ways, but it’s quick and always works.
HTH!
Cheers,
Scott.
Timill
@Ruckus: Or you can include a linky thing…
Steeplejack
@Amir Khalid:
As others have said, you can send it to yourself as an attachment to an email. That’s the easiest way.
In the camera app on your phone, you can open the list of existing photos, go to the one you want, then click the “share” icon (looks like “<” with knobs on it). From there you can select the “Gmail” icon (or the generic “Email” icon) and send the picture to yourself.
I send Gmail messages to myself because Google presents a lot of interesting articles to me on my Android phone but does not do the same on my Win10 computer. I’ll copy the article URL on my phone and include it in a mail message to my computer, where I can read it later.

Momo is breaking all the cuteness meters! Did you name her after the Michael Ende book? Samwise looks quite sleek in front of the fireplace.
Redshift
Since the recent pet thread, I managed to get a photo and video of Joe the bunny doing the banana dance! Plus bonus footage of him inhaling parsley, which is also very cute. @EarthWindFire, are you around?
CaseyL
This seems to be New Cat Season. Welcome, Momo!
I like the intensity of her gaze. Were you holding something interesting, to get her to look at the camera, or is that intense stare for everyone?
Congrat on completing the move to Denver, and living in a palatial estate :). In my experience, no matter how big your house is, you will fill it up to the brim sooner rather than later.

Nope. We’re good. 😁

Momo is an absolute cutie-pie. Thanks for translating her name. We named our first orange kitty Polly Peachum. She was a total sweetheart, and lived to be almost 18. I hope Momo has a long and wonderful life with you.

Thanks everyone!
Gemina13
Momo’s a sweet little dumpling. :)
I’ve heard orange tabby girls are pretty rare; one of my oldest friends has one, and the vet remarked on how special Athena is. Naturally, my friend cracked up, because Athena is also as dim as the Aleutian peninsula on a December afternoon. Sweet, though. Very affectionate.
rikyrah
The new cat is cute🤗
Major Major Major Major
@Gemina13: ‘orange/not orange’ are the two versions of a codominant gene that lives on the X chromosome. So to be orange with no black/brown, a male only needs one version of ‘orange’, but a female needs two.
eclare
Momo looks very sweet, love the name! About one hour in to the new Boston Strangler movie on Hulu. A little heavy handed at times (we get it, most women did not work outside the home at that time!), but pretty good.
Gemina13
@Major Major Major Major:
Kinda like for calicos, except that it’s the males who miss out on the coloring.
Major Major Major Major
@Gemina13: sort of… it’s not nearly so skewed though. Chromosomally normal males can’t be calicos.

Orange tabbies are the best! I had my little Ivan a few years back. Rescue kitty that was slightly brain damaged…was probably oxygen deprived very young before he came into my life. Very sweet soul. Tiny, shy little guy.
Momo is quite the looker! You done good.

We gots one of them orange models too, the boy version. Orange cats seem to be a bit rowdier than other kitties. I’ve had a few and they seem to be more personable and ornery but then again I love them all. At 1,600 sq.ft. you have room for a few more!! We have three in less space so get to work ya pikers! I’m glad to hear that you have survived your ordeal and will have some time to waste here.
We have a vagabond guest out in my shop too. I just gave her some treats and have to laugh because her eyes never look all of the way open, like she is stoned. She looks like Jim Breuer’s cat.
Mel
The soda bread looks delicious! What a beautiful texture, and the cranberries make it look even more tempting.
Your new kitty is adorable. What a sweet little face she has!

Look at that happy engaging innocent face on Momo! Just remember ,that like all cats, Momo is planning to kill you! ///

@mrmoshpotato: I think he’s referring to not wearing orange on St Patrick’s Day.

@Major Major Major Major: What a cutie! Congrats on your move.

Once took a tour of a soda pop factory.
When it first emerges from the vats, orange soda is green until enough additives infused to bottle it in the expected color.

Joining the chorus: what a pretty kitty! And looks like a sweetie, too.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen an orange cat that wasn’t adorable. Though I do also follow the FB group “All orange cats share one brain cell”—and not only for the pictures.
And congratulations on a successful move, Major Major Major Major.
LiminalOwl
@opiejeanne: The RWNJ on whom I had a crush in college always wore orange on St Patrick’s Day.
ColoradoGuy
Welcome to Colorado, Major! I’m north of you in the suburb/exurb of Erie, due east of Boulder and just off I-25. Yup, four seasons for real, and some days we get 50F temperature swings. Fortunately, thanks to dry air and brilliant, high-altitude sunshine, snow melts fast instead of sticking around for weeks like it does back East.
Speaking of the bright sun, UV levels are very high here, so be sure to wear good-quality sunglasses on bright days, to protect your eyes. You’ll find you tan very fast here, at any time of year.
P.S. Beware of coyotes. They are abundant and can be quite aggressive towards small animals. Prairie dogs are harmless and quite entertaining.
Welcome to the West!

@Amir Khalid: If you have a Google account on your Android, save it to Google pictures. Then it’s available in that folder on any machine you log into with your Google account.
Or at least that’s how I did it. Edit: ok, so I wrote this after 3 people said mail pictures to yourself, but before I saw Redshift’s same explanation.

Anti woke ninny Andrew Sullivan waves away DeSantis’ shutting down speech in Florida using state enforcement as “anti woke stuff” while portraying a two hour workplace training in diversity as an existential threat to the country:
If, God Forbid, the 17 elite anti woke ninnies remain hugely influential and published daily in major media we’ll be stuck in this woke panic forever.
Baud
@Kay:
Sounds like Sullivan realizes he can’t get pregnant.
ETA
This is why I stopped reading conservatives a long time ago. It’s not intellectually satisfying and oftentimes it’s straight up lies.
Kay
Americas great “public intellectuals”. Good Lord. What cheap junk:
The ninnies believe Donald Trump and Black Lives Matter are comparable. Because the one and only “thought” they produce is “THIS is just like THAT”.
We really need better elites. Ours are low quality. I think it’s the nepotism and lack of competition. Has produced a whole generation of middle aged mediocrities.
Kay
@Baud:
I wasn’t aware the antiwoke crusaders had turned on Kamala Harris. I should have known though. Completely consistent that they would back DeSantis over any Democratic woman.
Bitter, brittle middle aged Right wingers. The next generation of Fox viewers. They’ll migrate off Rumble right to Fox.
Baud
@Kay:
To my knowledge, Harris isn’t any more women than Biden. I wonder why they would single her out.
Kay
@Baud:
Substack and Rumble are the perfect business model for them- they don’t hire anyone else, they don’t pay or deal with anyone else and it creates little echo chambers where their subscribers all agree with them and tell them how great they are. Go read the comments on any of these essays- it’s 100% fawning “ditto!”
I read a Freddie DeBoer essay where there was ONE critical comment and DeBoer was thin skinned enough to respond personally to that ONE comment and shut him down. Free speech and debate!
Of course they couldn’t work for “newspapers” with “editors” and “coworkers” or “colleagues” like ordinary mortals. This level of contrarian genius demands they work alone, with no outside evaluation.
Baud
@Kay:
I always wonder how many of their subscribers are real people.

@LiminalOwl: My RWNJ brother used to wear orange on St Patricks day just to ne an asshole.
However I dis so yesterday, inadvertently. I have a bunch of shirts with black or tuxedo cats on them. Wearing bandit scarves, or trompe d’oeil ( sic sp?) black cats climbing through stripes on the shirt .
So since it’s almost Spring, I thought I’d wear the one with the ginger kitty jumping through denim. I did give him my grandmother’s shamrock stick pin to wear as an earring.
My office is mostly Catholic and mostly East European in background, so no one batted an eye at my orange kitty with the shamrock earring.
I was really surprised that my grandmother even had a shamrock stickpin. She hated her Irish grandmother. And her Irish grandfather who left just before the Famine felt he was lucky to get out of Ireland alive as a sixteen year old orphan.
