Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

All hail the time of the bunny!

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

Humiliatingly small and eclipsed by the derision of millions.

When we show up, we win.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

DISGUSTING.  Women are non-persons.

Well, Mikey is probably very fond of the idea of a slave labor force. If we could return to that, then we wouldn’t need Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid. Or OSHA. Or labor laws. Think of the cost savings for corporations.

Republicans are suing to try to force them to say that if it passes the state of MO will lose over $12 billion due to the loss of “taxpayers”, and they’re also claiming without evidence that it will cause the loss of Medicaid money. On the other hand, there isn’t anything we can do about this debacle. Democrats aren’t going to get to choose which incompetent fascist Republicans designate to run for Speaker, so for the time being all they can do is continue to vote for Jeffries.

In the unlikely event the GOP ever designates someone who isn’t 100% toxic, then the Democrats can consider whether they want to help put an end to the circus. Unfortunately, if they put someone across the finish line, they will have some responsibility for what follows. Can any Republican be trusted?

Texas Republicans Ban Women From Using Highways for Abortion Appointments

Lubbock County, Texas, joins a group of other rural Texas counties that have voted to ban women from using their roads to seek abortions.

This comes after six cities and counties in Texas have passed abortion-related bans, out of nine that have considered them. However, this ordinance makes Lubbock the biggest jurisdiction yet to pass restrictions on abortion-related transportation.

During Monday’s meeting, the Lubbock County Commissioners Court passed an ordinance banning abortion, abortion-inducing drugs and travel for abortion in the unincorporated areas of Lubbock County, declaring Lubbock County a “Sanctuary County for the Unborn.”

As Suzanne and others have pointed out, your only value to conservatives is as a forced birthing vessel. Or an Axlotl tank, in Dune parlance.

In short, not a group known for self-awareness or introspection.

Seems as if the far right Republicans think their time is now to run things.  No longer will they be led by Establishment types.  Trouble is, they don’t have the votes to push one of their own over the goal line but they have enough votes to stop anyone else from crossing the goal line too.  And that leaves us stuck in a mobius loop.

Unfortunately, if they put someone across the finish line, they will have some responsibility for what follows. Can any Republican be trusted?

First off, I doubt any GOP that negotiates with Dems is going to get elected to speaker. It would have to be spontaneous from the Dems and even then that speaker rule is in place and they can get ousted pretty fast.

That said, no candidate for Speaker should get Dem support without having some strings attached. Strings that the freedom caucus will not like.

Johnson also arguably has the most viciously anti-LGBTQ history of any House member. And that’s saying something.

Among other things, he was pushing a federal “don’t say gay” bill last year that would ban any mention of LGBTQ people not only within the federal government, but also any public entity that receives federal funds, including schools, hospitals, etc. Needless to say he also wants to overturn marriage equality. Earlier this year he claimed that it was illegal to fly a rainbow flag at the White House.

Prior to running for public office, Johnson worked as senior counsel and national spokesperson for the viciously anti-LGBTQ hate group, the Alliance Defending Freedom, where he filed multiple lawsuits against same-sex marriage, same-sex adoption, and same-sex marital benefits.

@scav: There’s still quite a bit of belief out there in inborn disability being a punishment for parental sin, especially among evangelicals.

    @rikyrah:

They’ll have to live with that.

And they will, happily. Because they’re pampered children who are just as sociopathic as GOP voters. But they don’t want to admit it because socially they’re liberal and don’t want the moral responsibility of actively supporting Republicans.

Passively supporting Republicans by undermining Dems and not voting at all is apparently fine.

@Citizen Alan: Some white conservatives do seem to really like the idea of adopting non-white babies and raising them as good conservatives, away from what they imagine as a pathological culture. It’s a sort of missionary/white-savior attitude. The kids usually end up getting a rude awakening at some point.

@TriassicSands:  Johnson would likely pass a law making homosexuality (etc.) punishable by death. I wonder how many Republicans would vote against that?

As candidate for VP, Governor Mike Pence of Indiana was asked a number of times if homosexuals should be thrown in jail. He could never give a simple honest answer to that question, but just danced around it.

@smith: I didn’t say it made sense. They think shutting down the government is a good thing because that’s what the MAGA base thinks. They don’t care how “normies” see it.

@Citizen Alan: I very much doubt I assumed anything well-intentioned or positive in outcome for the little cross-clutching forced breeders.  I was so wild-eyed as to momentarily posit the creep meant exactly what he said and intended the birth of able bodied workers and not puling infants that need care.  They’ll also only skim the cute cream of the white crop for their in-house pets.

@Bill Arnold: Exactly. Hurricane Otis is a demonstration of what climate change means. When you warm the entire globe, even by seemingly tiny amounts, you put what turns out to be titanic amounts of energy into a titanic chaotic system.

Chaos has known qualities. The range of the craziness it CAN get up to is limited by the amount of energy in it. Raise that limit and, now and then, you see glimpses of a new normal, and this is such a glimpse.

Surprise sudden cat 5 is just the beginning of what a globally warmed climate system has to show us. Call it the new normal ‘cos we’re gonna have to live with it or die surprised by what we didn’t think could happen.

@Sean: It’s something to watch, that’s for sure. If the anti-MAGA, anti-Trump wing are properly disciplined, the best thing they could possibly do is smack down Trump’s new guy with an even higher margin than Jordan failed by. Just keep whacking moles.

Otherwise, it’s gonna be some kind of mess, who knows what. Could this Johnson have massive legal exposure for insurrection activities? Could the Dems know about this? I’m at a loss at this point, can’t figure out what’s up with all this.

They just passed 70 R votes and not a single R vote for anyone but Johnson.

85 and not a single other or present vote.

By this point in previous elections the candidate had already been rejected.

    @Goku (aka Amerikan Baka):

Why? It’s no secret the GOP is extreme these days. That’s why they’ve been underperforming in elections in the past few years.

Well, this guy is especially bad because he was a primary architect in the House for getting his colleagues to sign off on the false electors scam. That is a really big problem for democracy.

    @way2blue:

Because CHRISTIANITY.  Per the Old Testament, New Testament, Church teaching, and JESUS HIMSELF women are under men.  They must submit to their husbands.  Patriarchy is demanded.

Women having any say in anything, not doing what they are told, or even speaking up is profoundly anti Christian and anti Jesus and goes against the core of that religion completely.

If we are going to have Christianity men must decide everything.
