A little look at our new AKC-recognized breed.

Maybe Cole could lie about ‘upgrade’ Thurston Howl’s backstory?..
It’s small in stature, big on activity and known for a “smile,” and it’s ready to compete with 200 other dog breeds.
Say hello to the Lancashire heeler, the latest breed recognized by the American Kennel Club. The organization announced Wednesday that the rare herding breed is now eligible for thousands of U.S. dog shows, including the prominent Westminster Kennel Club show.
With long bodies and short coats that are often black and tan, the solidly built dogs are shaped a bit like a downsized corgi, standing around 1 foot (30 centimeters) at the shoulder and weighing up to about 17 pounds (7.7 kilograms). Historically, they were farm helpers that could both drive cattle and rout rats, and today they participate in an array of canine sports and pursuits.
“They’re gritty little dogs, and they’re very intelligent little dogs,” says Patricia Blankenship of Flora, Mississippi, who has bred them for over a decade. “It’s an enjoyable little breed to be around.”
Their official description — or breed standard, in dog-world parlance — calls for them to be “courageous, happy, affectionate to owner,” and owners say contented heelers sometimes pull back their lips in a “smile.”
They’re “extremely versatile,” participating in everything from scent work to dock diving contests, says United States Lancashire Heeler Club President Sheryl Bradbury. But she advises that a Lancashire heeler “has to have a job,” whether it’s an organized dog sport or simply walks and fetch with its owners…
Lancashire heelers go back centuries in the United Kingdom, where they’re now deemed a “vulnerable native breed” at risk of dying out in their homeland. Britain’s Kennel Club has added an average of just 121 Lancashire heelers annually to its registry in recent years, and the American Kennel Club says only about 5,000 exist worldwide…
Good for the people who love the breed. But I Cynically predict a spate of ‘designer’ doxi-huahuas, minpin-huahuas and everyday ‘little black-and-tan mutts’ being passed off by pet-site grifters (and in a couple years, by rescue sites) as ‘rare purebred Lancashire Heelers’, as well.

Good Morning Everyone 😊😊😊

I think Cole would question “enjoyable breed” to be around in the case of Thurston.

Speaking of tainted jury pools (WaPo gift link)…
Not a whole lot in the article that readers here would find surprising, but it does provide some hard data, and it’s good to see the warning front-paged by the post.
Ken
“Lancashire Heeler” is totally out of Terry Pratchett.
I do hope that the breed doesn’t suffer the curse of the AKC. I could see a couple decades of breeding turning it into a perpetually-“smiling” mess with vulnerabilities to lip tears and gum infections.

Reading up on the whole Harvard President thing it sounds like more of the game the Religious Right has been playing since the Satanic Panic in the ’80s of making up a scandal, everyone knows this is just BS, but the media enabled it anyway for reasons (likely because writing articles scolding the left is easy) and it only worked because as DougJ pointed out, Harvard is basically a Hedge-fund and the Hedge-fund Mangers on the board of trustees went along with it.

@Spanky:
Ah yes, the FBI. Sure, they could have prevented Trump from reaching the White House in 2016… simply by refraining from trumpeting out loud, at exactly the most sensitive point in the campaign, that they were reopening the investigation into HillaryzEmailz when they in fact were doing no such thing. Then they wouldn’t have had to incite a riot to make Trump look bad. But they wanted him in the White House for four years. But only for four years. Because reasons.
They’re crafty, those FBI guys.

If Thurston is anything like his sister Lovey, he can’t qualify as he weighs a LOT more than 17 pounds. Last time Lovey was at the vet’s, she was at 25 pounds. She’s a chunk.

Lovey, and possibly Thurston, are obviously Standard-sized Lancashire (PA) Heelers!

Hell, if they somehow helped the riot along, it would have been because they wanted it to succeed.
If they did, it would be hard to see what difference they made. The President of the United States had urged his supporters to show up in D.C. on January 6th because it would be “wild,” and that morning he spoke in public to urge them along. Maybe the FBI was doing what they could to nudge things along, but when the big guy is doing a lot more than nudging, so what?
Matt McIrvin
@Betty: Rufo always telegraphs his punches, saying publicly “this is the trick we’re going to do to manipulate the media into pushing our position,” and we always wonder why they would be so gullible when he actually does it. But I think they read Rufo’s tweets and think “oh boy, this is gonna be fun! Better be sure I don’t get scooped on that!” because whatever happens, it’s a reliable source of clicks and buzz.

This is true; however, they want you to think they don’t have any agency. They act like they have to write about these things because everyone else is writing about them. They refuse to acknowledge that they often set the agenda just by what they choose to write about.

@Krista (RedKitten That Was): Oh Lord, I’m so sorry. We used to have two huskies, they shed dust bunnies constantly.
Salty Sam .
As I understand it, this is just AKC recognition of an older, established breed so that they can compete in AKC events. It isn’t a newly created breed like all the “xxx-a-poos”, etc.
And I completely agree with you on not supporting “new” breeds. I prefer “accidental cross-breeds” (mutts) myself. Heck, mutts are as much a “new” breed as anything recognized by the AKC.

The politicfact screen grab is their summary of the claim
politifact counts for Nixon, Reagan, Trump 147 people indicted
For Carter, Clinton, Obama 2
absurdly, politifact rates the claim that 99% of indictments were in Republican presidential administrations “half true” even though by their count 99% were in Republican administrations because they object to counting the number of counts in indictments rather than the number of people indicted.

I think that, except for his doggy soulmate Lily, Cole is really a cat person. He thought Rosie was an asshole, he thinks Thurston was an asshole. What if they are just regular dogs, and the mismatch is that Cole’s expectations of dogs can be summed up in one word?
Lily. (tearing up as I write all that. I 💕 Lily)

@BlueGuitarist: From your numbers, 98.65% of people indicted were in Republican administrations, which rounds to 99%. So I rank Politifact’s “half-true” as “wholly false”.

Are you an alcoholic? Looking for some way to stay off the juice? I mentioned yesterday how the metallic taste is overpowering. I’ve now also learned that it makes beer and dry red wine taste beyond godawful. @BlueGuitarist:
In Politifact’s defense, the claim they are rating says nothing about percentages:
Captain C
@Old School: If your defense is that “only” 142 people got indicted, on 317 counts, you’ve still lost. Also, it shows that Republicans tend to hire multiple offenders.

Ken
@Old School: That sounds even worse for Politifact, since the claim specifically says indictments, not people.
Old School
@Captain C: Politifact’s argument is that Robert Mueller’s Russian interference investigation indicted 34 people, but 25 were Russian officials/intelligence officers. Similarly, 68 people were indicted over Watergate, but only 28 were part of the Nixon administration.
Eyeroller
@comrade scotts agenda of rage: Interestingly, I lost my taste and smell when I had Covid, but only for a few days and it could have been due to sinus inflammation more than the virus. I did detect a mild metallic taste from Paxlovid but it was barely noticeable. I don’t know why it affected me so much less than it seems to affect many others, but it’s not a universal side effect.

@comrade scotts agenda of rage: the only thing that worked for me to mitigate the awful taste was one Hot Tamale candy, every 17 mins.

The claim lists 215 indictments for the Trump administration. Politifact counted 81 charges against Trump associates – and six indictments. (I should point out this post is four years old.)

@Rileys Enabler:
Heh heh, I’ve discovered something similar in terms of masking the taste, in this case Halls Lemon cough drops. Similar approach to your Hot Tamale candy approach.
I’ve noticed that the tsunami of metallic taste begins about 45-50 minutes after the dose and it remains really strong for at least 6 hours. It slacks off over the next 6 hours (until the next dose) but never really goes away.
I wanna stress, I’m not complaining (mostly). This cost me nothing, my plague symptoms are mild and hopefully this will ensure no long covid crap. Having medical access like this is one reason we moved back to Denver from Podunk Junction, Misery.

So after 19 years posting on DailyKos without incident (including being a paying supporter), with no warnings I’ve been put in a 1 week timeout (cannot do anything active on the site) in response to a story about the Israeli government having clandestine meetings with the African nation of Congo and several others for the potential acceptance of Gaza emigrants.
Apparently the DK rule is that comparing Israel to Nazi Germany is immediately subject to timeout. Never mind that the diary’s title was “Israel’s Gaza ethnic cleansing plans continue to unfold“.
Stupid censorial stuff like this is why I’ve stayed out of I/P arguments, but I’m also really upset about being singled out. I’m considering not going back.
Ohio Mom
@comrade scotts agenda of rage: Yes, I noticed that the bad Paxlovid taste waxed and waned in sync with the dosing schedule. I hardly ever drink alcohol so I can’t comment on that phenomenon.
Last year I had a rebound case after finishing the Paxlovid, this year it was smooth sailing. Both years, it kicked in right after the second dose.
All in all, I’m very impressed with this miracle drug.

@Ohio Mom: Against all odds Mrs. Spanky and I managed to dodge a close and prolonged exposure on Christmas Eve, but one thing has perplexed me, especially in the week we were waiting for the hammer to drop: If the home test shows positive, how do we get Paxlovid? Will my PCP prescribe it from a phone conversation with us? And how do you folks get it from the pharmacy? I don’t think ours delivers, but if we’re both positive I don’t want to go into the store.
Eyeroller
@Spanky: You should be able to get it over the phone from your PCP. In my case, I contacted a telemedicine group that has a contract with my insurance company because I decided to get it on a Sunday, and I got a prescription in a few hours. CVS would probably have delivered it, but by the time it was ready (next morning since the script didn’t arrive till they’d closed) I was feeling like I could leave the house, so I masked up and went to the drive-through to pick it up.
Matt McIrvin
@Spanky: The first time I got it, I did a telemedicine consultation with my PCP’s office, and they put a nurse practitioner on (someone who’d examined me before, so he did know me) who basically told me, “It sounds like your case is mild, the purpose of Paxlovid is to prevent complications or death from severe cases, so I wouldn’t recommend it… but if you keep insisting, I could give you a prescription.”
And I didn’t press the issue, but maybe I should have. And it might work for someone else.
Burrowing Owl
@Spanky: I set up a video visit w my provider and got the pax prescription from that. As for picking it up, is there a pharmacy with a drive through window you could use? Hope you stay well.
comrade scotts agenda of rage
@Spanky:
I went thru my medical group’s portal. Went to my local office’s part, got an “urgent care” appointment for the same day. Video appointment with a PA. Discussed everything, they sent in the prescription.
Per an above comment, they were okay with approving it “because of my age”. That will be a talking point during any appointment.
You then coordinate with the pharmacy about pickup. Mine indicated they’d bring it outside but I had my wife pick it up.
Mai Naem mobile
@Missouri Buckeye: You won’t be the first not to go back. DK sometimes comes across like HS. Sometimes I want a ‘like’ button at BJ but that kind of upvoting helps ruin a site like I believe it’s done to DK. I haven’t been back to the site in years but I had a lower three digit user number. I was there when Kos had Howard Dean on the site taking questions in IIRC ’03.

I just have tended to be a lurker the last few years.
Spanky
Thanks, everybody! No worries this week, but if the time comes, it looks like my first stop will be a call to my PCP, and I think he’ll be able to recommend the best local source, and direct the prescription there. Our preferred pharmacy does not have drive-thru, but the local CVS does.

@Matt McIrvin: It’s not been shown to be particularly effective except for those of us over 65 and/or with comorbidities. It is intended to keep a mild case from progressing so for an individual, you can’t really tell whether it worked or not. For us oldsters it’s more of a precaution. And medically “mild” means “no shortness of breath or low blood oxygenation”; one can still be pretty knocked down and it’s “mild.”
EthylEster
@satby: I agree about FIFA. But I think many/most football fans know that and don’t endorse FIFA decisions. But supposed dog lovers snap up new breeds as soon as they are available. It’s the individuals I am complaining about, not the associated organizations.

I don’t know if you can be off topic in an open thread, and maybe you already know this, but Amazon is instituting mandatory “limited” ads into its video streaming service starting January 29 unless you put up another $3 a month to be ad free. (!) I do not subscribe to a premium video streaming service to watch ads, but to absolutely avoid them. So many ways they could improve, much of their selections are trash, navigation is terrible, it’s hard to find anything (ad free) that is watchable, and the portions are so small! Blech! @Spanky: I think you’ll have to go to a doctor; we went to urgent care. You could use the pharmacy drive thru window if it has one. Hubby ended up not taking it since he had a mild case; his pharmacist told me that Paxlovid can have some pretty severe side effects so he only recommends people who are trying to stay out of the hospital take it. Just this morning as I was contemplating my “designer” breed dog (a Cockalier – Cavalier King Charles/Cocker mix), I wondered why I’ve never heard of a Poochi (Poodle/Chihuahua mix). It made me laugh. Combining two tightly wound breeds, prone to hysterics – miniature/toy Poodle and Chihuahua – what could go wrong?
