So the speech was moved from Jan 6 to today.
President Biden moved his speech on democracy, marking the anniversary of Jan. 6, up a day due to the incoming winter storm in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic regions this weekend. The president was set to travel to the Philadelphia area on Saturday to mark the third anniversary of the riots at the U.S. Capitol.
Here is the live link. It’s the NBC embed, if they put up one from the White House feed (or Joe Biden campaign account) I’ll add that one.
As promised, here’s the official link from the Joe Biden campaign:
I’ve scheduled this to post a few minutes before his speech is to begin. Who knows if the scheduling will work (!) or if he’ll be on time. I’ll try to keep an eye on all of it while I’m painting today (laundry room cabinets to change things up). (Good intentions gone poof! – I instead decided to make two loaves of Rye Bread)
Otherwise, open thread

C-SPAN seems to be showing Nikki shaking hands and greeting people in Londonderry, NH while we wait for Biden’s speech.
Huh.
Old School
Looks like they are running behind.
Edit: And we have music! “This program will begin shortly”
Chris
@RaflW:
Compare and contrast 2016 when CNN literally broadcast the empty podium that was waiting for Trump rather than broadcast a simultaneous Hillary Clinton speech.
Spanky
I keep waiting to hear “Your call is important to us …”
Chris
@Spanky:
They could at least make the elevator music a rickroll. Show some online culture humor.
WaterGirl
It’s on!
Never again will we bow down to a King!
RaflW
Tacky of me to comment on stagecraft. But the backlighting makes Biden’s hair look purple.
Nice to see Joe listing off the Rudy & Fox mega-dollar settlements. Turn the screw on those shits.
RandomMonster
Love that Biden just said “Trump was a loser.”
Omnes Omnibus
@RaflW: Punk AF.

“What a sick fuck!” Say it, Joe.

Biden on Trump laughing about the attack on Paul Pelosi: “What a sick…” <stops himself>

“What a sick——-”
Well done, Sir.

President Biden’s tie is very striking.

Biden is showing some genuine anger. And I’m here for it.
piratedan
happy to have him remind EVERYONE that during the attack on Jan 6th, that everyone from Faux News to GOP senators condemned the attack and Trumps actions and now… tunes have changed as people have been making political calculations and denying what took place.
MazeDancer
@RandomMonster: Me, too!
Dorothy A. Winsor
Joe is bringing it.
Mike in NC
Trump deserved the Mussolini treatment for his coup attempt. Instead he’s still literally stinking up the planet.
RaflW
“We know who Donald Trump is. We have to ask ourselves who we want to be!” Excellent line.
eta: “I’ve been doing this a hell of a long time” is also so perfectly Joe Biden. I mean it! :)

He looks great!

Chris
Great speech.
Welp, that’s it, election season is on for real. May the Force be with us.
Citizen Alan
@WaterGirl:
Personally, the saddest thing about the 2016 outcome was when I remember Obama’s speech was that stirring line “We don’t look to be ruled!” And then, it turned out about 49% of us do, in fact, look to be ruled. In fact, I suspect it’s more than 50% if you add in all the lefty idiots who want a dictator who will give them Medicare for All and confiscate all the guns.
Dorothy A. Winsor
Great speech. We’ll see how it’s received.
Omnes Omnibus
@Citizen Alan: No, it’s not 49% or more. Not everyone who wanted to was able to vote. That’s is a different problem. You moved out of MS, but your mind seems to be stuck there.

I hope SFB was watching and has a stroke….

@Mike in NC: Agreed. We can Learn something from the Italian and French- the OG revolutionaries
japa21
@Omnes Omnibus: Excellent point and why we need to increase the numbers who can vote.

For a senile guy Pres Biden seems to have his shit wired tight. Unlike his opponent speech’s that immediately veer into a Festivus airing of grievances.

My Irish is up for 2024!
NickM
It struck me how much Biden used Trump’s name over and over again – after years of not referring to him by name. It really was a dramatic shift.

@japa21:
Yep! I’m writing GOTV postcards (aka sign-ups for FL Vote By Mail) to Democratic FL voters this week, and for many weeks to come.
If FL gets a pro-choice initiative on the 2024 ballot, I want every Democratic voter to have ballot access.

Nice introduction by Justin Douglas, the newly elected Dauphin County PA commissioner we were talking about last week in the one person making a difference thread.

@Omnes Omnibus: Regardless of how you want to calculate the unknowable percentage of people who were prevented by suppression from casting a vote for Biden and against Shitgibbon, I stand by my belief that a shockingly and terrifyingly high percentage of my fellow Americans would prefer to live under a white supremacist herrenvolk dictatorship.
No Democrat could have ever even joked about serving a third term and received adulation from a crowd for doing so.
SiubhanDuinne
I was running a bunch of errands this afternoon, but heard most of the speech in the car, and I thought it was outstanding. Joe’s passion for democracy and his contempt for TIFG came through clearly, even with no visuals.
But as soon as I put away groceries and set up my new drawer dividers (yay for Container Store sales!!), I’ll watch the entire video.
TeezySkeezy
@SiubhanDuinne: Was that on NPR? Glad they at least ran the speech. CNN made it a headline. Not so much on other news sites.
RevRick
Just a sobering reminder that 60% of whites voted for the sick bastard. They’re with him. And we have only escaped his tyranny thanks to the votes of our black, Asian and Hispanic sisters and brothers. I am forever grateful to them that we aren’t ruled by that God-damned fascist.
different-church-lady
WaPo headline you’ll be seeing in a lot of Dem ads:

@RevRick:
Be fair. 60% of white MEN voted for him. Only half of white women did.

@Leto:
Also, the abortion preemption case.

@Citizen Alan:
I don’t think you’re wrong at all.
Don’t ever forget that story about one of Dolt45’s supporters. Her SO was hurt by Dolt45’s actions.
Her response.
” He’s not hurting the right people.”
SHE and hers were good people. He wasn’t supposed to hurt THEM.
But, all the rest of THE OTHERS..
Dolt45 hates all the right people.
They don’t think that he would hurt THEM. He would only hurt THOSE PEOPLE.
And, they are just fine with him hurting THOSE people.
I have said before, when I talk about fascism, I mean fascism for WHITE people.
Black people had an experiment with American fascism for almost a century. It was called Jim Crow.
And, yes, most White people had no problem with it.
It’s why they want to MAGA again.
Have said it before. They want to party like it’s 1923. And, given a chance, they’d do it in a nanosecond.
They miss those days.
So, unlike others, Citzen Alan..
I completely agree with you.
SiubhanDuinne
@TeezySkeezy:
I listened to it in the car on MSNBC (Sirius XM). I assume it was also on CNN and NPR, but I didn’t go looking. Bonus MSNBC: they interviewed Jamie Raskin right after the POTUS speech. Always happy to hear what Jamie has to say.
eclare
@rikyrah:
I remember the interview with that woman who wanted to hurt the “right people.” IIRC she worked as a prison guard in either FL or MS. I feel for those inmates.
Leto
@Baud: and NY AG Letitia James is now seeking $370M, as well as permanent disqualification from the NY real estate business, for the Russian asset. A lot of legal things happening today.
Leto
@eclare: there was a report that roughly half of FL prison guards were either white supremacists, or adjacent, to them. So her statement tracks.
RaflW
@different-church-lady: I had to kind of dig to find the story. It was published today, but no where easily seen on the home page. WTF.
It needs to be blasted out there: Trump will work happily and seriously to end access to medication abortion, coast-to-coast.
Omnes Omnibus
@rikyrah: 40% of white men, 50% of white women, and 95% of everyone else say no to that. That is a majority. Then we count the people whose votes were suppressed. Most Americans don’t want want the GOP is offering. We can’t let ourselves think otherwise. There are many structural problems that give them an advantage, but having the support of the majority of the American people isn’t one of them.

I just donated to the Biden-Harris campaign, responding to an email with the subject: Valley Forge. It’s a small donation, but I want them to know that I approve of this message. More of this please!

Feb 8, SCOTUS hears arguments on the Colorado ballot case.
Wonder what malarkey SCOTUS is going to invent to circumvent the clear “originalist” intent of “No Insurrectionists on the Ballot.”
OTOH, if they wanted to get back their reputation in one fell swoop, they could go with “No Insurrectionists Allowed
WaterGirl
@BlueGuitarist: I did not know that!
I joined about 15 minutes late and just fast-forwarded through the introductions, having no idea that that was Justin Douglas!

@Leto: oh man, that is going to set off the small fingered vulgarian something fierce. Trump businesses not operating in NYC would be a blow to his ego like none other.
David ⛄ 🎅The Establishment🎄 🦌 🕎 Koch
@MazeDancer: they’ll say he hasn’t been adjudicated in a trial as an “insurrectionist”
what’s telling is how they take this case immediately instead of letting it work it’s way up the federal appeals courts, while they declined to take Jack Smith’s immediate appeal on immunity.
cain
@MazeDancer: Will Thomas bow out? His wife was a clear insurrectionist.
Captain C
@cain: I don’t think Thomas would recuse if his wife was on trial for first degree murder and her defense was: “I’m the wife of the bestest Supreme Court Justice ever and that means I can legally do whatever the hell I want!”
WaterGirl
@cain:
Plus – though I don’t recall where I learned this – most big businesses anywhere have some sort of presence in NYC, so even if they aren’t BASED in New York, they still wouldn’t be able to do business with Trump.
If that’s actually true, then Trump truly may be on the receiving end of a death blow. Business-wise. We can only hope.
Ruckus
@NickM:
He didn’t need to say it before.
But now that SFB is flaming out and didn’t pay the gas bill – for his last 10 yrs at least. Which means he’s got no heat left.
We talk about presidential age here but remember that SFB is only 3 1/2 yrs younger than President Biden and has lived a life of unreasonable eating habits, lousy weight control and ignorance.
President Biden has taken good care of his health and well being along with being seemingly at least two or three tads smarter than SFB. OK eight to ten tads smarter, aware and willing to work for all of us, not just his wallet.
eclare
What was the pattern on Joe’s tie? I couldn’t make it out.
lowtechcyclist
@WaterGirl:
It means that Trump had very publicly NOT been going whole hog on banning abortion, but apparently he’s come around and mended his fences with the antiabortion movement. And of course they will be trying to ban abortion in more states and possibly nationwide in 2025 if Trump wins.
MazeDancer
@David ⛄ 🎅The Establishment🎄 🦌 🕎 Koch:
They could say he hasn’t been convicted. Ignoring that the Constitution doesn’t require that.
cain
@Captain C: Thomas doesn’t think any rule applies to him anyways. We should just keep docking his pay and piss him off some more.
lowtechcyclist
@David ⛄ 🎅The Establishment🎄 🦌 🕎 Koch:
I thought appeals from state supreme courts went directly to SCOTUS, and the only question was whether they’d grant or deny cert. Am I wrong about that?
cain
@WaterGirl: Indeed – it would be the end of all of Trump’s U.S. operations. Operations he’s been working on since the 70s. His entire identity is wrapped up in his businesses.
It will destroy him utterly.
smith
@David ⛄ 🎅The Establishment🎄 🦌 🕎 Koch: I’m pretty sure he was adjudicated an insurrectionist in CO by both the trial judge and the CO Supreme Court. He was not convicted in a criminal trial, but he is an adjudicated insurrectionist based on those findings, just as he is an adjudicated rapist based on the findings in the E. Jean Carroll case.
lowtechcyclist
@MazeDancer:
They could say “we’re reversing because fuck you, that’s why.” Given the quality of their legal reasoning since they got their 6-3 majority, it’ll pretty much amount to that.
smith
The problem is, the Constitution says nothing about how to determine when someone has met the criteria for insurrection. There has to be a clearly understood procedure, otherwise it opens the door to all kinds of malicious mischief. I can imagine, for instance, the Traitor States disqualifying any Dem who ever voted for gun control, on the grounds that they participated in an insurrection against the Second Amendment.

Boeing asks FAA to exempt MAX 7 from safety rules
Old School
@eclare:
Looks like nothing specific. Looks like a shield with some lines.

That is scary. There is no way I would fly on any model MAX.
WaterGirl
@glc: Oh yeah, nothing makes me want to get on a vehicle that is FLYING IN THE FUCKING SKY like knowing they want an exemption from safety rules!
In what world would it make sense to give them that?
WaterGirl
@eclare: I see that we are on the same page on this!
eclare

Thanks! I couldn’t enlarge a photo that I found, but I could enlarge that one.

Boeing has gone downhill wrt safety ever since it merged with McDonnell Douglas and let the finance people have more influence than the engineers.
Dan B
@eclare: Boeing moved HQ to Chicago. The engineers have almost zero influence. We don’t fly anymore.
eclare
@Dan B:
Yeah, it’s really sad. I imagine much sadder for the engineers and safety people who work or have worked there.
