President Biden: 2024 is the first national election since the January 6 insurrection placed a dagger at the throat of American democracy. We all know who Donald Trump is. The question we have to answer is, who are we? pic.twitter.com/JZOW77RRtK

What a brilliant speech.

TFG gave a speech, also…
I don't want to make election outcome predictions, but I will make an adjacent argument: There's been a media blackout on Trump. Once the American electorate gets exposed to more of this, many will remember that they hate it. https://t.co/ymN5E7ROa8

I remember when Trump mocked disabled people in 2016.

I remember when Obama mocked Trump.

TFG is a sick fuck. We all know what Joe did not say out loud.
Betty Cracker
I agree with Ms. Jacobs in the last tweet above. Lots of Americans have forgotten what it was like to have that asshole constantly braying in our faces. They’re about to get a reminder. It’s a pity the rest of us have to endure it too, but here we are.

Biden’s speech was well received by most of the chattering class on Twitter, and since they “shape the narrative” that helps.
At the same time, tfg’s incoherent, rambling, nonsensical and mean speech got a lot of attention for being all of that; with the same opinionators all talking about how obvious it is that his slipping gears are getting worse.
Winner: Biden, by miles. Hope that continues.
Baud
While 2016 was inexcusable, the two things you could say are:
No such excuse this year.
Matt McIrvin
@Baud: Not entirely true though. I think most people still don’t understand how much worse an unleashed Trump out for revenge could be. They figure they got through his first term all right because they’re the ones who survived.
All through the worst of the COVID pandemic I remember people expressing nostalgia for the simpler days just before it hit. During those days, Trump was president. Somewhere in the back of too many people’s minds, there’s this idea that if they elect him again we can somehow un-start the pandemic and rewind the world to that. And for some reason they don’t blame him any more for how it went.
Baud
@Matt McIrvin:
I don’t think so, since he lost in 2020. People aren’t nostalgic for the chaos, except his fans.
ETA: Before the pandemic, he never polled positive.

And the SCOTUS decision to lift the injunction that prevented Idaho from prosecuting doctors if they perform an abortion as an emergency measure on a critically ill or injured woman to stabilize her, along with the other red states attempts to kill pregnant women with complications, is going to really inflame voters for the next election. People think we’ve gone back to a pre-Roe timeline, but it’s much worse. Abortions may have been illegal, but they treated non-viable pregnancies and critically injured women, they didn’t let them go septic or bleed to death before Roe.
p.a.
tRump is like the kid (I bet most of us know the type), who loses a game and, instead of moving on to the next kid-thing, just wants “one more try”. Again and again. And whose friends egg him on- and carry guns.😳
Baud
@satby:
I hope so. I hate the thought of women rolling over about what’s happening.
Matt McIrvin
@satby: The real model was the super-strict abortion laws that got passed in a bunch of Latin American countries after visits from Pope John Paul II in the 2000s. They started doing things like leaving ectopic pregnancies untreated.
TBone
@Baud: Women I know (and I am one) do not easily forget or forgive those who cause such blatant, grievous harm. Salem “witches” come to mind.

In the olden days MSM would shun those who made fun of disabilities, now they just accept it.
Baud
@TBone:
I wish BJ peeps were representative of the nation. But I will assume the best!
sab
@satby: Actually in a lot of states they did let them go septic, but back then it was considered an unfortunate but unavoidable risk of pregnancy. After Roe we realized that it was actually an avoidable result of inadequate medical care.
Geminid
@Betty Cracker: Yes, while Trump has been a near constant presence on this forum, he’s been out of most people’s lives for three years. Now he’ll be in their faces again, blaring on about how they need four more years of his bullshit.
Will his absence have made their hearts grow fonder? I don’t think so.
TBone
@Baud: Morale is so very important. I, for one, will not succumb to thoughts of anything but victory, my eyes are on the prize and I will do my damnedest to scream about this issue to anyone who can hear. They will not succeed.
Baud
@TBone:

@satby: Was just reading about Ohio’s ongoing harassment of Brittany Watts over a miscarriage. It’s sick, the way the state is torturing that poor woman. I wish she could sue them for millions of dollars.

@Betty Cracker: @TBone: Even if she has adequate and successful legal defense, she is still a private person who has had her face plastered all over media all over the world in what should have been only a personal sad event.
I want doctors that sent her home untreated (twice) and the nurse who reported to be civilly sued and criminally prosecuted. Both broke federal laws.
TBone
@sab: punitive monetary damages and loss of licensure at the very least. How are these people insured against malpractice?
OzarkHillbilly

SFAW
@Baud:
And yet he was close to winning in 2020 (vis-a-vis vote margins in key EV states), and he still polls far better than he would/should in a country with a rational electorate.
Unless and until Rethug voters have to pass a sanity test to be allowed to vote, we’re in danger of that mofo getting elected. Or appointed, for that matter. [“Appointed” meaning by the House.]
Baud
@SFAW:
Yes, the risk is real.
TBone
@SFAW: polls are useless and poll tests are illegal. I’m not sure why you think he was “close” except for the EC fuckery. I am confident that we in the majority will not stand for any more malarkey, we’re not monkeying around.
SFAW
@TBone:Poll tests are illegal? No shit? Next you’ll be trying to tell me poll taxes are illegal.
I may be an asshole*, but I’m not a moron**. Yes, I know they’re illegal. But polls are not useless, just not as useful as the Village likes to depict them.
The “EC fuckery” as you call it is — until NPV becomes the Law of the Land — the only thing that matters in the end. And considering that a flip of something like 80K votes in key states (GA, AZ, for example) in 2020 would have given TFG a majority of EV, you might want to rethink your snark.
* Omnes can attest to this statement
** Omnes might disagree with this statement

@SFAW:
Yep. I am confident that we will win the popular vote. I am optimistic that we will win the EC, but the reality is that TFG has a non-zero chance of winning.
That just makes me want to do more, probably postcards to some other state as I live in TN.
TBone
@SFAW: I apologize if that sounded condescending, I am not trying to insult you. I am just a stubborn mule and have had enough doom and gloom.

According to Trump’s lawyers and his social media posts, this means that Biden, as President, can do anything he deems necessary to remove the threat. Right?
SFAW
@TBone:
Thanks.
There are a number of people here who equate statements like “we’re in danger of losing to TIFG” with “OMFG!! We’re going to lose!! OMFG!!” Not that my opinion matters — as I wrote before, I’m an asshole — but it might be better if you did not fall into that trap. [NB: I have been (incorrectly) labelled as an “Eeyore” in the past because of just such equatings [sic].]
BlueGuitarist
@SFAW:
Re National Popular Vote Compact
popular vote would be better than electoral college, but NPVC is a pre-1/6/2021 idea that assumes Republicans will do the right thing. They won’t. most Republicans don’t think Democrats should get the electoral votes of states Democrats won while winning the popular vote, Republican electors aren’t going to vote for Democrats. the fake electoral certificates of 2020 make clear Republicans will send electoral certificates for Republican candidates even if state legislatures direct that the slate chosen is that of the winner of the national popular vote not that of the state.
SFAW
@BlueGuitarist:
Don’t know much, if anything, about the NPV Compact. I was just talking about a straight-up NPV.

Watching Biden’s speech on YT, I did not know that J6 convicts performed as a choir from various prisons on cell phones. WTF? Sounds like some wardens and guards need to be relieved of their taxpayer funded jobs.

No, polls are useless. The polling turned out to be dead wrong in the last two elections

@Ken: Yes. If Pres Biden and his National Security/legal team determine (and maybe the secret NSA style court agrees) that TFG is an existential and malevolent threat to the United States of America, as constituted; a ‘wet action’ can be authorized (and would be perfectly legal) to remove TFG as a threat to the republic.
SFAW
@catclub: I think I’d prefer a kitty, but aside from that …
SFAW
@Paul in KY:
Meanwhile, various RWMF elected officials, in multiple states, have floated the idea of Biden being removed from the ballot in their state, because … veeblefetzer, I think was their justification(s). In other words, the same “evidence” that they have for his impeachment.
