Rained pretty much all day today, and at some points it rained so hard it would be a legitimate gully wersher in West By God Virginia. I had to spend some time on the road, because last night before bed Thurston chewed through my sleep apnea mask. Just the cloth part. I only noticed as I was getting into bed and just screamed “god damnit thurston” and had a solid laugh cry.
I tried to macgyver something with cooking twine, and that didn’t work, and then Joelle fixed jury-rigged up something to get me through the night with, I shit you not, one of Jack’s bandannas and KT tape for her knees. Whatever black magic she did, it worked, but I needed to replace it. So I had to drive to a medical supply place in Mesa because my fucking head is so big that the Phoenix and Tempe stores did not have the right size.
Got all the way out there, got up to the register to pay for it, and… Arizona is like one of four fucking states in the country that require a prescription for a sleep apnea mask. They regulate the machines everywhere, but the masks? All I can figure is it is either a money grab or something related to meth use or production. At any rate, as one can imagine, I do not carry around my sleep apnea prescription, so I just used my internal voice to SCREAM FUCKKKKKKKKKKK all the way back to the car.
I have one coming tomorrow from Amazon so I did not even bother calling my doctor and having them fax over the fucking prescription. I asked Joelle if she has any old nylons with runs in them and we’ll use them to fix something for tonight. God damned dog.
Did some more organizing today and made a batch of pico de gallo. About half way through cutting everything up I remembered that Joelle had a food processor that someone had gifted her and she had used maybe once. I took it down, put the right attachment in, plugged it in, and discovered that the machine has two modes- “off” and “VIOLENCE.” It sounded like one of those space movies when the ships warp drive spins up and it vibrated across the counter.
I immediately unplugged it and put it away, and I called Joelle and said “we’re selling the food processor neither one of us needs to be around that ever” and she said “ok.” Longtime readers will remember back when my father lost his thumb in a wood chipper a couple weeks before heading to the beach for the winter. I don’t remember when exactly but he was in his 70’s, the asshole. And NONE of us knew he had a fucking wood chipper.
At any rate, as soon as they were gone my sister Devon drove down in her truck, loaded it up, took it home, cleaned it, and immediately sold it. She then either mailed them a check or called them and sold the wood chipper. Dad started to protest and Devon cut him off and said he’d lost his wood chipper privileges and regardless that wood chipper had a taste for blood now.
That’s how I feel about that food processer.
Not much going on otherwise. Had a nice salad for dinner and just taking it easy for the rest of the night, I suppose.

My sleep apnea headgear has two staples through it in one place and has been stitched back together in another. I have ordered replacement parts three times but either they sent me the wrong thing or I can’t figure out what bit I was supposed to order out of over twelve different pieces because I have everything BUT what needs replacing.
At some point it will fall apart completely, but since my insurance doesn’t pay almost anything for durable medical equipment I will not be replacing it fully until then, since the pieces were a total of around $40 but the entire thing is like $150.
And pretty sure California requires a prescription too, and Kaiser doesn’t like giving to anyone but their preferred provider, which is 100% mail order and about as much fun to deal with as a manic pixie dentist.

We have a Cuisinart mini-prep, because I have no knife skills & am too physically clumsy to develop any at my age. Yes, it makes hella noise, but after several years of (okay, rare) use, I’ve yet to cut myself on it, and it purees seeds in tomato sauce and nuts for pesto most satisfactorily.
On the other hand, I finally bought a ‘nice’ sharp knife set, and the Spousal Unit refuses to go near it after he dropped his steak knives twice & ‘nearly cut a toe off, if [his] slippers weren’t in the way’. And then I managed to slice longwise through a fingernail using the nice sharp bread knife on a loaf of slightly-too-stale sourdough, so he’s muttering about getting rid of the whole set…

Just spent 5 days in southern California (Pasadena/Calabasas/WeHo/L.A.) and it was cloudy 85% of the time and rained on three of the days. People in San Diego got hit with horrible flash flooding and mud. Yikes.

In the west, rain is a cherished event. I grew up in the mid ’70s California drought – “If it’s Yellow, let it mellow. If it’s brown, flush it down” – so the wet season is always a coin flip.

I commented a few months ago that it wasn’t 10 seconds out of the box that I had sliced my thumb on a brand new high quality blade. The worst thing about dull knives is they allow us to forget how to handle a properly sharp knife.
Also, this dog’s agility run will take away some of the lingering frustration at poor Thurston.

You need a recent prescription to get a mask in Ohio too. Ohio Dad, our resident CPAP user, tells me that Medicare requires you to have specifically seen a sleep disorders specialist.
The nurse who fits my compression sleeves had to try out several masks before she found one that worked for her. I hadn’t realize that there are different versions.
And that exhausts my knowledge of CPAPs and their masks.

Lots of attention to Trump’s missteps at his rally in NH, but I didn’t realize he has also started repeating himself in the same speech. I’ll admit, I’ve been skeptical of the dementia label for him (though i agree he isn’t what he once was) but this stuff sounds just like Alzheimer’s — my Mom has it and this was an early sign.
I read it in a gift link to a Millbank WaPo article and I can’t share it because I don’t have a subscription, but here’s a quote:
“But I listened carefully to Trump that night — no easy feat because he went on for 100 minutes — and noticed that, even though his text was fed to him through a teleprompter, he told many of the same stories over and over again, repeating some lines almost word for word in the same speech, with no apparent awareness that he had done so.”
And then he gives many, many examples

Sleep apnea peeps should check out cpap.com. I just got a new machine for 50% off. Their website said I needed a prescription but I figured what the hell and ordered it anyway and it came 4 days later. I got an email after that telling me my prescription was now on file. I’ve gotten supplies from them for years. They don’t take insurance but sell for less and receipts can be submitted to insurance by the patient. It works for me.

Speaking of weather, I had to drive in the dark this morning for an early appointment in thick tule fog (which is back now that the drought is over). My Accord has fog lights so I turned them on but couldn’t tell a bit of difference in visibility, which was initially at about 50 ft but then improved as I drove further west on the highway.
So I wondered, do fog lights on passenger cars like sedans really help or are they just a cool feature that adds more $ to the cost of the vehicle? I asked the internet and the answer was all over the map: yes, no, maybe, and they only work in less than 100 ft visibility.
Any experts here to answer this burning question?

@Scout211: Because fog lights are positioned lower than the regular headlights, they can help out in terms of seeing the lines at the edge of a road or in a parking lot.
In general they are most useful at sub-10mph speeds.

I bought a pair of cut-resistant gloves of some sort of reinforced cloth (from Amazon[1]) a while back, and use them for gardening when thorns are involved, and because they are gloves, for shoveling snow. And sometimes when the cat is being particularly feisty with his murder claws.
Haven’t tried them for knife work; generally, paying 100 percent attention is best. (Can be distracted by human sounds, so if anyone is talking, the knife work stops.)

I’m very annoyed with the Post Office at the moment. I assembled a Priority Mail flat rate shipping box with gifts for a friend’s birthday. Pre-paid for the shipping, printed the label, suck it on the box and dropped off the box at the post office yesterday. As of now the tracking number says it’s “pre-shipment” and they still haven’t received it. I put it in the package drop-off bin with all the other packages that people drop off. I’ve done it before and never had this problem.
They don’t want you to stand in line if you’re just dropping off a pre-paid box but next time I think I’m going to, just to make sure it gets checked in. I can’t imagine what’s happened. Did someone steal it out of the blue package drop-off bin? Did the label get messed up somehow? Are they just slow?
I don’t know what to do. I can’t prove I dropped it off because I don’t have a receipt for that. Just the receipt that I paid. Any suggestions?

@Scout211: Not an expert, but what I’ve found is that they help locate the peripheral lane lines of the highway, or even the margin between pavement and shoulder, when the going gets tough. Welcome to rainy AZ, Cole! We’re getting it down here in Tucson, too; welcome, as it’s making up for a meager monsoon last summer.
I don’t know if you have read Rick Perlstein’s “Before the Storm”, about the Goldwater campaign & the origins of modern conservatism, but there is a ton in there on Arizona political/social history, plus it’s a great read. Helped me out when I was newcomer. 👍👍👍🤠

@Mr. Bemused Senior: Yes, the freeways are a scary nightmare in tule fog. Luckily, my drive this morning was on a county highway and the tule fog only lasted for about 10 miles and then it was just fog with about 1/4 mile visibility.
Yarrow
@Alison Rose: Thanks. That does make me feel a bit better.
@Ohio Mom: That’s my next plan. I’m not sure what they can do for me, though. I can’t even prove I dropped it off. Usually they scan them in the same day, even if they don’t go anywhere for a day or two.
I’m worried something happened to it. I always wonder if people randomly steal packages from those drop-off bins. They’re just sitting there. Pretty much anyone could. Maybe they have security video?

@Yarrow: Depending on how the weather has been by you, things are running behind with all shipping because of floods or ice. That includes people getting in to do the work. I dropped off a box this morning with a home-printed label (printed last night). Let the clerk at the PO scan it, got the receipt.
Got to work, checked the tracking site, it said “label printed, waiting for package”. WTF??
That was the same message for about 6 hours.
Then, it finally said that it had moved to a distribution center. So, it’s actually moving and in their public-facing system now.
I assume that your package is fine. :-)

@Quinerly: I am sure you will get tons of suggestions — I noted last week that Organ Pipe National Monument is amazing. Saguaro National Park is, as the snark says, cool if you like cactus. ;)
I will recommend some stargazing. Tucson is a dark-sky city and the University of Arizona (Bear Down!) is one of the best schools for astronomy in the world. I would see if there is a Star Party happening when you are going to be in southern AZ and try to make that. There is a big astronomy community there. Even better if it is out deep in the desert, west of the Tucson Mountains. The desert skies are usually very clear and if you are out far enough, super-dark.

@Quinerly: cool types of things to do in SE Arizona/SW New Mexico
For items close to/in Bisbee…
The Copper Queen Hotel/Museum which has done what they can top keep it looking like it’s heyday in the 1880s. There also a tour of the Copper Queen mine itself if you’re interested.
Bisbee itself is a bit unique as it’s built into the hillsides of the area outside the mine, so driving around and shopping around can involve a bit of stairs to go to and from. A thriving artist community is there with painters, weavers, craftspeople dealing in wood, stone, metal and minerals.
It also serves as the home base for a series of JA Jance stories set in Cochise County (with Sheriff Joanna Brady).
Tombstone is a bit touristy with the OK Corral themed “attractions” so if you don’t mind that, it’s just about 20 miles away.
To the SE of Bisbee is the border town of Douglas, it’s a struggling place not exactly on the beaten path to anywhere, but if you take AZ 80 eastbound out of there, you drive around the south end of the Chiracahua Mountains into New Mexico. There’s a small remote desert wildlife museum outside of Rodeo that’s worth a peek and Rodeo itself while is nothing big, has a great view of the eastern side of the Chirachuas which are impressive. If you stay on that road, you can take the turn to Twin Forks and get back to Interstate 10 and then head west back into Arizona. From I10, if you’re into exploring, you can take the Portal Road exit to Portal which is in the heart of the Chiracahua Mountains itself. While I’ve never been myself, I’ve been told its quite pretty.
If you go west out of Bisbee towards Ft. Huachuca, you can take AZ 82 across to Sonoita and Patagonia. Out that way is the Elgin Area where there is a modest Az Wine country. Sonoita is horse country with lots of beautiful vistas. Between Sonoita and Patagonia is Patagonia Lake Park, its a state park with a walking trail and its rarely used in the winter. I’ve heard that the Dos Cabazeas WineWorks is fine (not a vino guy) and if brew is your thing, the Copper Brothel brewery are both in Sonoita.
Let me know if there’s something specific you’re looking for and I’d be happy to share what I know….
South of Sonita is another state park (Parker Canyon) that is seldom used and also quite picturesque.
Quinerly

@piratedan: thanks for all of this. You didn’t have to put in the thread. You hit pretty much all my areas (see my response to Suzanne). @Quinerly: well the Tubac Area also has a couple of wineries that are still in business as well and in the center of town there’s a nice little shopping area that also caters to all sorts of locals crafts and artists, everything from local honey confections to local chocolate and items that have been repurposed into art.
If you have the time, a trip to Madera Canyon is worth it, simply because a lot of birds winter there, so if you into observing wildlife, it’s something of a marvel. Also close to Tubac is the Titan Missile Museum if that’s your thing.
While you’re in Bisbee, I would make sure to try the Bisbee Breakfast Club at least once, there’s one in South Bisbee…

Fog lights (yellow) are designed to light up the immediate area in front of you (think wide and low). They make lines in the road stand out better and enhance your low beam lights to improve close in vision. When properly aimed they don’t blind oncoming drivers, which is a nice feature.
Too many people think that they cut through fog and no, they don’t. If the fog is thin then yes they will but they work best with a smart driver who knows that driving fast in the fog is an accident looking for a place to happen. I find they work best on darker roads with less traffic, the more bright lights there are around the less effective they are.

Combined with the stability offered by Jack’s bandanna the stretchy knit of the stocking allowed for maximum mask flexibility.
