Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

The National Guard is not Batman.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

The words do not have to be perfect.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

T R E 4 5 O N

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

We will not go back.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

I have no idea why this was posted today.  All I could find was a reference to a 2020 Curb Your Enthusiasm” episode, but that was from 2020.

But I don’t care.  I love this so much.  (clip is only 35 seconds)

Totally unrelated, I just finished watching Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes.  We’re going to have a zoom on Saturday for anyone who wants to join us to talk about the shows.  So far it’s me and kalakal, and we are open to Saturday afternoon or Saturday evening.

I just finished the final season of Ashes to Ashes last night, and I have so many questions!

Anyone else interested in joining us?

Larry David is out promoting the new/final season of Curb Your Enthusiasm.  I see he “punched” Elmo on the Today Show.  ( The Muppet – not the Twitter guy.)

In a 2004 episode Larry has a mad crush on an actress he’s working with and is about to consummate the relationship when he discovers a photo of her with Dubya and he immediately becomes sick and leaves.

Anyone else watching Silo on AppleTV?  It’s a futuristic, dystopian sci-fi series and damn is it good!  It has a lot to say about class/caste systems, govt manipulation of the people by information control and it’s very suspenseful/nerve-wracking.  Very much binge-worthy and full of surprises.

Looking forward to starting Feud: Capote vs. The Swans for some trashy, catty, drama-fun.

    @Ohio Mom:
they’re actually related. They both participated in the PBS show “Finding Your Roots” where Dr. Gates and his staff do a family genealogy and a DNA test.

Each man takes a DNA test and finds out separately that they are a genetic match with someone else who has appeared on the show.

Not only were they raised a mile and half from each other in BrookLynn but they’re also long lost cousins.

@schrodingers_cat: There are a lot of old Jewish men who look and act like them. I am sure sociologists have a term for this phenomenon, where members of a sub-culture so closely resemble one another.

ETA: did you see my answer to your question the other day about being alienated from your cultural roots? That is how I’ve long felt about contemporary liberal Judaism. Never got into the Israel thing.

I’ve seen the US version of Life on Mars (which has a surprisingly strong cast), but I’m guessing this is the UK version, as I don’t think Ashes to Ashes made it over the pond…

Now I’m reminded of the time Jason Alexander went to talk to Larry David about George Costanza. IIRC, Alexander said something like: “this scene makes no sense, nobody would end up in this kind of situation, and even if they did, why would they react like this?”

David’s response was: “well that’s exactly what I did when that happened to me!”

And at that point Jason Alexander gained a deeper insight into how to play the character…
