I just filled out my vote-by-mail ballot for California’s March 5th primary. Will drop it off in a ballot drop box later tonight.
Scout211
Thanks for the reminder. Ours are sitting on my desk and we need to get them filled out and dropped off.

@Scout211: I’m dropping mine at the local county Registrar of Voters downtown Monday. Hand it to a human and all that. Looks like the poling place near me isn’t going to be there on election day.

Our 14 year old border collie just went over the Rainbow Bridge this afternoon. He passed at home on his own. My mom was devastated. I’ll be sending a picture to WaterGirl here in a minute.
NotMax
Not even about the lamb?
Elizabelle
@Yutsano: condolences to your family. Hard to say goodbye to such a good doggo.
Yutsano
@Elizabelle: Thank you. He was definitely a good doggo. He used to watch my nephews up until he couldn’t walk anymore.
EDIT: if it wasn’t for the fact that they live in the desert I’d look at getting them another Newfoundland puppy.

@Yutsano: I’m so sorry.
BigJimSlade
@Yutsano: ohhhh, my heart goes out to you and your family.

In regards to the thread earlier today that mentions the pie filter a lot, I’m making, for the first time, a cherry clafoutis tomorrow to bring to a Super Bowl get together :-)

@TBone:
It’s a twister.
Elizabelle
@Yutsano: He was herding them. I do hope another good dog is in your mom’s future. (And yours!)
They improve life immeasurably.

I got something to say. Sliced spicy Buffalo chicken, Stilton blue and jalapeno cheddar cheeses on a toasted roll with butter, mayo, lettuce and tomato.
With a hot creamy tomato soup to dip it in. That’s all.

@Yutsano: My condolences.

Excellent update. Very informative.

I still need to experiment with how full I can fill puff pastry for Cherry Explode’ems. Stop it, underfilled cherry turnovers.

Oh, so you’ve been to the Foodland bakery department.
On the other hand, when they do (intermittently) appear – at another market – the coconut turnovers are firm and fully packed. Drawback is too much cloyingly sweet glaze on them, though. Wind up scraping most of that off.
Yutsano
@HinTN: Thank you. Mom is still upset.
Yutsano
@BigJimSlade: Unpitted cherries or GTFO.

Scamp Dog
@Yutsano: My dog of a lifetime was a Border Collie. She had two puppies right after I got her, spent a week lost on the Pawnee National Grasslands before finding her way to a farmhouse, confronted coyotes whenever we ran into them, and was the best dog at all of the training classes we went to. I still miss her.
May his memory be a blessing.

@NotMax: Mmmmmmm thank you.

However, they don’t pay their smaller musicians well, and I want to support things that are not necessarily top ten.

@Yutsano: my condolences to you and your family. i’m sure you have so many happy memories of them.

@Alison Rose: Good doggie! A couple of border collie stories I like to recall — in the early days after 9/11 there was a run on search dogs of the usual breeds for this work, so someone tried border collies. Who proceeded to herd the airport passengers. Then there was the farmer who toured the croft in a pickup with his b.c. at his side, when, near the highway along the property line, he spotted a lost lamb. The man exited the truck to get the lamb, leaving the dog behind the wheel. Hilarity (with no injuries) ensued.

My wife and I are going to the Allentown Symphony Orchestra tomorrow afternoon to hear them perform Richard Strauss’ Don Quixote for viola, cello and orchestra; Mozart’s Overture to Don Giovanni; and Bizet’s Suite from Carmen. I understand there will be sportsballing later in the day, but I’m a UConn college basketball fan, so….

@Yutsano: Condolences to you, your mom, and all your family Yutsano! 14 years as a beloved family member is heaven to our pets, and he had that with your family.
Kelly
@Yutsano:Condolences. Some dogs are just mother creatures.
Back in the 1970’s, when my nephews were toddlers, my folks had a short, fat spaniel looking mutt, Freckles. When a child was at the cling to the furniture stage of learning to walk she would lean against the couch offering her back for the child to grab tiny handfuls of fur for support. Then she would carefully walk the child around the room.

@Yutsano: I’m so sorry. Hugs to you, your Mom, and the rest of the family. There is no pain like losing a much loved animal: we know it’s going to happen someday, but that doesn’t make the grief any less.
It’s late, and so probably too late for this thread, but I could use some advice:
I torqued my knee a little doing some invasive-plant-clearing at a park. I’ve already iced it once (which seemed to make it hurt more), and took some Aleve. It doesn’t hurt to bend when I’m sitting down with no weight on the leg, but it’s generally achey. Seems to be coming from inside the knee.
I won’t panic unless it’s much worse tomorrow.
But advice is welcome.
NotMax
@RevRick
Mom went to see the new ‘modernized’ production of Carmen at the Met recently and came away unimpressed.
Music unchanged, however in this version instead of Carmen working in a cigarette factory she works in a munitions plant. And Escamillo is not a toreador.
eclare
@CaseyL:
I have never hurt a knee, but when I hurt my Achilles, ice was the answer. Fifteen on, fifteen off, fifteen on. Elevated. Yes, the ice hurt, but it helped tremendously.
One of my former bosses was a linebacker at UGA. He said he never would have survived without ice.
But there is a lot more going movement wise with knees. Give it a few more days of ice and taking it easy? Then call a dr?
surfk9
@Sister Golden Bear: I came of age in Salinas. I moved there when I was fourteen. One of my first lessons was to always have layers. The weather in Salinas is the same as in the City
CaseyL
@eclare: Thanks! Ice is back on (well: a bag of frozen berries) and I had forgotten about elevating it.
Oh, if nothing works, I fully intend to call a doctor.

Sounds good! Elevation helps.

@Yutsano: I’m so sorry, Yutsano.

@CaseyL: Ah, you know the frozen veggies (berries) trick too! No need to buy actual ice packs.
Hope it feels better in the morning. Take it easy.

Aaron Rupar(!) throws in the towel.
BigJimSlade
@BigJimSlade: Sounds inspiring :-)
Yarrow
@CaseyL: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. With ice, make sure there is something between the ice pack and your skin, like a thin dishtowel. You can damage the skin if you put the ice directly on it. 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off for ice. You can ice for the first 24 hours. If it isn’t at least a little improved you might want to get checked out.
Sister Golden Bear
@CaseyL: @Yarrow: I’ll second Yarrow’s advice. A bag of frozen peas is ideal for icing your knee. Ask me how I know.
Also, if you can tolerate ibuprofen, I’d do a day’s worth of that, since it’s an anti-inflammatory. Just be careful because it’ll mask the pain, and potentially led you to over do it.
sab
@CaseyL: When my husband had his first back surgery they recommended making icebags with a dishtowel, a gallon ziplock bag and a 50/50 water/ rubbing alcohol solution. Soak the dishtowel in the solution, zip it into the bag and then freeze it. It sort of freezes cold but it doesn’t get really stiff like an all water icepack. We always have three of them in the freezer.

I lived in Marin county for almost 6 yrs. It was an amazing place. I enjoyed it quite a lot. Actually only went into SF 2 or 3 times during that time. But in my travels when I worked in professional sports I traveled to 46 of the states, have seen a number of National parks all over the country and places I would never have expected to see when I was a kid. I’ve traveled through much of Europe and enjoyed most of it. And much of this country is actually is pretty nice. And yes there are exceptions, and most countries have at least some.
Bruce K in ATH-GR
Since it’s an open thread, I opened the home page of the New York Times, and was gobsmacked to see an article headlined: “Why is age such a big problem for Biden, but not for Trump?” Of all the unmitigated gall…
Tony Jay
@Bruce K in ATH-GR:
Been said a bajillion times. It’s pure trolling with a side of reputational gaslighting.
If you pushed one of them up against a grimy toilet wall in the back of a Heartland diner and demanded an explanation, they’d probably stutter something about just following the public’s lead in deciding what to cover. But once the third finger gets flushed around the u-bend and Mr Pincers moves His snippy attentions south, they’d sobbingly admit that ‘the public’ is just a euphemism for the narrative handed to them in their twice yearly ‘Themes & Direction’ meetings with senior editorial staff.
Being extra-bitchy about the targets of their faux reportage is probably just a coping mechanism.
Tony Jay
@CaseyL:
I did my right knee on Boxing Day while stopping myself slipping on an ice rink. Didn’t hurt much until later that evening, but Jeebus H. Christ did it hurt that night. The only way I was able to sleep was by tucking a pillow behind the affected knee and lying on my back with it bent and elevated.
Things I didn’t do.
1) Ice. Bags of something frozen wrapped in a kitchen cloth works fine.
2) Ibuprofen. Brings down the swelling.
Boy, was that a night.
sab
@sab: I realize that assembling this is impossible when you are already injured. But these icepacks have served us well for the last ten years. Others should think about it. We all trip and fall and injure ourselves.
prostratedragon
