Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

the 10% who apparently lack object permanence

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

Trump should be leading, not lying.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty. ~Thomas Jefferson

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

People are weird.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

Is trump is trying to break black America over his knee? signs point to ‘yes’.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Stay strong, because they are weak.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

TEMU appears to be a kind of on-line shopping mall filled with Chinese vendors selling cheap plastic items. Exactly the sort of thing the world needs right now. Their ads are on every damn site I visit, and also appear as a banner on Google Search. Their investors-owners (whoever they might be) are spending advertising money in ginormous quantities. My guess is they’re trying to out-compete and replace Amazon.

What does everyone think of the Super Bowl ads so far tonight?

For a number of years, Super Bowl ads have been frantic, over-stuffed and over-produced. They are a part of the entertainment, I guess, but not really designed to really sell you anything. So you see some familiar faces, Arnold and Danny Devito, two stars from Cheers, Christopher Walken, Patrick Stewart. But I really didn’t know or care what was being pitched.

The ad for Dunkin Donuts with Ben Affleck and friends and family at least prominently displayed the company name and colors, but wasn’t very interesting.

The Coors Light commercial, featuring a huge, destructive train, was just an exercise in excessive production design.

The Beyonce ad would have been magnificent, and might have actually broken the Internet, had it also featured Taylor Swift. But something like that would have required some real imagination.

@Another Scott: They, the NFL, do. They’ve made YouTube take it down, so trying to find it elsewhere is really hard.

Bengals Super Bowl Memory: The Tim Krumrie Injury

Tim Krumrie will always be known to people as the player that unsettled so many stomachs during Super Bowl XXIII, suffering two breaks in his tibia and another in his fibula. But Krumrie personified a level of toughness difficult to find in today’s game. Refusing to go to the hospital after being taken off the field, Krumrie planted himself in the locker room, cheering his teammates. At one point it seemed like he’d be celebrating with his Bengals bros while wenches filled wooden steins with endless amounts of mead. You know, just like how we imagined they celebrated after wins when we were children.

Eventually paramedics convinced Krumrie that if he doesn’t get to the hospital soon his mangled leg could cause him to go into shock. There was little worry that the injury was life-threatening; not because the injury wasn’t serious, we’re just not sure if death would risk facing Krumrie in the emotional state he was in. We’re pretty sure that if Krumrie were sent as a peace ambassador to Syria, it would be the safest country on Earth within six days.

Doctors placed a 15-inch steel rod into his leg and returned in time for the start of the 1989 regular season, allowing him to continue his games played streak which would end in 1994 at 122 games. That’s right. In the middle of his games played streak, he broke the crap out of his leg, had a steel rod implanted, tied up his cleats and asked Chuck Norris to step aside. Chuck complied.

    edit: WTF WAS THAT TACKLING!?!?

He did that for 5 or 6 years before he decided it wasn’t worth it and started buying from other reputable vendors. Maybe things have changed in the past 10 years, though.

@Citizen Dave: I wonder if that correlates to when CBS made Romo stop calling plays in advance? Early in his commentator career, he’d call the plays before they happened. Did that during a Pats playoff game when Brady threw to Gronk. I know that CBS punched him in the wrist for that, and his calling changed after that. Personally I don’t have a problem with him. I have more issues with Joe Buck but that’s just me.

@Sister Golden Bear: Avalune and I absolutely LOVE the Spiderverse animated movies. Incredible animation, awesome story, the music is just too damn good, and it’s a multiverse story done right. Not complicated to follow, but it’s mainly there to help drive the overall story. It’s not the central point, which is what the MCU is failing to understand.

@Matt McIrvin:  I think it was a combination of things. The incels organized against it. It required viewers to have watched not one but two Disney+ series to understand what was going on. Also, I am not a fan of the MCU take on Carol Danvers as she seems  to have nothing interesting about her beyond the “Hey  look! Female superheroes are powerful too!”  Which, btw, was the only reason the character was originally created (Marvel in the 70s wanted to ride the “feminism fad” so they introduced female versions of several characters–Ms Marvel and She-Hulk, most prominently). All the interesting stuff about Carol Danvers such as her power loss at the hands of Rogue and how she got over it and her brief struggle with alcoholism (Tony Stark eventually became her AA sponsor) all happened decades later and none of it made it into the movies or realistically could have because of how the MCU story arc had evolved by that point.

Think SF was the better team, but just made too many errors: missed extra point, not running their great RB more. Settling for the FG in OT, etc. etc. Actually, if Ravens defense hadn’t imploded couple weeks ago, KC would never have made it.

I predict from now on, in any playoff OT situation, the cointoss winner will not go first.
