    On Facebook, I’ve been posting a Song of the Day, and since today is Valentine’s, even though I’m permasingle-by-choice, I had to share the song that would’ve been my first dance song if I’d ever gotten married:

    For one thing, it’s a sweet and simple love song, but for another, HER VOICE. This woman is phenomenal. She sings, she writes her songs, she plays multiple instruments (guitar, banjo, ukulele, and probably more), and her music incorporates elements of folk, gospel, bluegrass, soul, blues, and then some. And you have never heard, nor will ever hear, anyone who sounds like her.

    Never underestimate the wrath of an ex, and ex’s current hookup.

    A father was shot and killed during a custody exchange of his 4-year-old daughter, Colorado deputies say. The 36-year-old was meeting with his ex-girlfriend for a custody exchange of their 4-year-old daughter in Parker on Sunday, Feb. 11, the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release posted to Facebook on Feb. 12.

    During the meeting, the woman’s fiancé got into a “physical fight” with the father, deputies said. The fiancé pulled out a handgun and shot the father, who was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to deputies.

    After being called on scene, deputies said they found the suspect, identified as Jeffrey Church, 26. Church was arrested and is facing first-degree murder charges, deputies said, adding that an investigation is ongoing.

    This past Christmas, one of Jonathan Mauk’s three sons gifted him a dehydrator. A “meat and potato kind of guy,” Mauk often used it to make beef jerky, his eldest son, Matthew Mauk, told McClatchy News in a phone interview on Feb. 13.

    The 59-year-old, who lived in the same San Bernardino home his mother bought in the 1970s, drove to a nearby Walmart in Highland to pick up some more curing salt to make a new batch along with his favorite soda, Pepsi, Matthew Mauk said. As he was backing up his car in the parking lot the evening of Feb. 5, though, he hit a car behind him, Matthew Mauk said witnesses told him. Jonathan Mauk got out of his car, his son said.

    “He was apologizing, admitting fault, and the person turned around and shot him,” Matthew Mauk said.

    Jonathan Mauk died on scene, San Bernardino Police Capt. Nelson Carrington told The Press-Enterprise. The San Bernardino Police Department didn’t immediately responded to McClatchy News’ request for comment on Feb. 13. The suspect, identified as Shawntece Marie Norton, drove away but was arrested the following day, San Bernardino police told KCAL News. Norton, 37, is being held without bail and is facing a murder charge, according to online jail records.

    At her arraignment, Norton pleaded not guilty, the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office said in an email to McClatchy News. She is expected to appear in court again on Feb. 15.

    Slow news day? Here’s something good to nosh on: Wisconsin lawmakers adopt new legislative maps that could undo gerrymandering

    Wisconsin lawmakers voted on Tuesday to adopt legislative maps drawn by the Democratic governor, Tony Evers – inching the state closer to undoing the extreme gerrymander that has ensured Republican control of the state for more than a decade.

    The pair of votes in the Republican-dominated state assembly and state senate are a sign that the years-long battle over Wisconsin’s legislative maps may be finally drawing to a close, giving Democrats a chance to win control of the state legislature in upcoming elections for the first time since 2012.

    The vote is the result of a December ruling from the Wisconsin supreme court that the current state assembly and senate maps are unconstitutional, ordering the state to adopt new legislative maps before the 2024 election – and setting a mid-March deadline. Republican and Democratic lawmakers, the governor and multiple third-party groups submitted revised maps to the court for consideration, and in a 1 February report, consultants hired by the court to review them said that the GOP-drawn maps maintained the partisan gerrymander and “do not deserve further consideration”.

    The maps still need to be signed by Evers to go into effect. Evers previously signaled he would sign the legislation if it came to his desk.

    A Marquette University researcher, John Johnson, found that Evers’ maps still give Republicans a slight edge at retaining their legislative majorities, but by a much narrower margin than the current maps.

    Maybe not perfect, but definitely better.

    However, they DID change the language of the enabling legislation, such that the new maps would not kick in until November of this year, leaving the old maps in place for special or recall elections taking place before then

    Hate to say it, but the GOP rule makes some sense. If you have a special election with the new maps, you’d potentially have two reps representing the same geographic area, and other areas with no reps.

    @OzarkHillbilly: New York’s redistricting committee should be presenting a new set of Congressional district maps soon. They meet tomorrow. The expectation is that this map will be more favorable to Democrats than the one drawn by a special master for the 2022 midterms.

    Tom Watson- the professor not the golfer- is one good source for this type of New York political news. I think he’s @TomWatson on Twitter, maybe other platforms too.
