The Post spends a looong time [gift link] going through the politics, resentment and inferiority complex behind the Rhode Island Hall of Fame, as it is torn apart by the decision to add Michael Flynn to the list of notables:
In December, it emerged that Flynn — a Rhode Island native, retired lieutenant general and former national security adviser who pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI and was later pardoned by Donald Trump — would be inducted into the Hall of Fame at its annual banquet this spring.
At least nine members of the organization’s board resigned in response. Some of this year’s other inductees said they would decline the honor. The husband of one of the board members who had resigned reported the group’s former longtime president to the Internal Revenue Service.
As a kid, I remember visiting the North Dakota Hall of Fame, which is literally a hall in the basement of the state capitol. The first inductee was, obviously, Lawrence Welk. Peggy Lee also made the cut. Anyway, it’s one of those strange characteristics of little states that they have to honor people whose first step towards fame and fortune was leaving the state. (Peggy Lee, for example, says she fled to escape abuse at the hands of her stepmother.) I don’t recall any recently-pardoned criminals in the ND HOF, but I haven’t been there since I was a boy.

I’ve never set foot in RI and I probably deserve the honor more than Flynn.
MattF
On the other hand… ‘inducted into the Rhode Island Hall of Fame’… I don’t object to that. Previous inductees may disagree.

The state house dome where the “Independent Man” resides is currently being repaired, so here’s a link to a nice close-up view from when he was on display at ground level.

@japa21: I like RI ( my older sister went to college there) but aren’t they famous for a shocking level of corruption? And yet they send Sheldon Whitehouse to the Senate every six years.

Uhhh, really?
I’d probably hate-attend to prop a poster-size print of this up, at my table.

Maybe add his spittle-enhanced RNC convention rage speech to the tribute video. Was my introduction to Flynn and I can attest to being traumatized.
Nice work, tiny state.

That’s gotta be proofs and proofs past the beer goggles stage of desperation. Only a gilt-spraypainted doormat would adequately capture the essence of a Trump-pardoned entity and the RI HoF must be lower than that. Poor dears. They must sorely miss the distinction of all those extra letters in their official name.

This is why it’s so important to cancel people.

Dammit, I lived in Rhode Island for three years and they never asked me to join their HOF. Actually, this is the first I ever heard of it. Screw Flynn for his part in Fat Bastard’s coup attempt.

@wjca: I happened to visit Rhode Island once [for work]. A couple of citizens working at the bank expressed to me their pride in being the most corrupt state in the nation. Perhaps the Hall of Fame shares this attitude.

Maybe I should return my Certificate from the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantation for my “Faithful and courageous service”!

The Post article linked in the post does not mention that the board removed Flynn’s name from the HOF list at the end of December. Or rather, they “deferred” his selection.

@sab: We overstate the corruption to puff ourselves up. It’s not a rich state, so the corruption isn’t big-time; more like former Gov Ed DiPrete (R) reputedly going dumpster-diving for a misplaced envelope containing $10k. At a Walt’s Roast Beef (a local “Arby”-type place) IIRC. He went to prison after his 3 two-year terms for corruption in granting contracts, $250k.
My fave was the newspaper photo of the state’s Supreme Court Chief Justice zipping up as he was leaving a motel where he had an extra-marital liason.
But most of it is relatives getting jobs they’re not qualified for, bill-padding, the smaller-time “every day” stuff the Soprano crew were into. (David Chase had family in Providence.)

I’ve seen the North Dakota Hall of Fame. I remember some guy who was a big GM executive.
True story about my first time in Bismarck – I asked the Hertz clerk for directions and was told something like “turn right at the State Capitol.” I made it to the hotel, but was very confused because I thought that somehow I’d missed it.
Of course, I’d driven right past it, not realizing that the tall stone white building in the middle of what looked like a park was the capitol because it didn’t have a dome. It’s actually a great building, but really unlike almost any other state capitol building in the U.S.
TBone
@Another Scott: I can’t enlarge enough to truly see it on my phone. Is there some kind of writing all the way down the dress? The family motto, perhaps? 😆

@TBone: I made tomato soup last night because I had bought a fougasse at Trader Joe’s that I had to eat. OMG – one of the best things ever. (The soup. The fougasse was tasty but not what I consider to be a true fougasse.)
Sauteed onions in butter, added red pepper flakes, some Italian seasoning, a can of whole tomatoes, a teaspoon of chicken “Better Than Bouillon,” and close to a can of water. Let it simmer until the tomatoes broke down, hit it with the stick blender, added 1/2 cup of warmed half-and-half and salt. So good! So much better than canned tomato soup.
I keep forgetting to buy mushrooms so I can make cream of mushroom soup.

An IMHO handsome ’30s state capitol is Oregon’s. Not a dome per se but an Art Deco take on a dome. I think it’s aged nicely even as their Republicans have become middle-school brats.

I wouldn’t think the overlap between MAGA and sneaker fans would be very big. I associate sneaker fans with NBA fans, skateboarders, maybe soccer players. Maybe hacky sack players. Not MAGA. Seems like an odd choice for an appearance.

@eclare: Perhaps a sneaker industry group, rather than sneaker aficionados?
……OOPS, never mind: “Sneaker Con is a global traveling event for sneakerheads of all ages. Buy, sell and trade, meet influencers, get sneakers authenticated and more!”

Mike Flynn is a religious bigot who believes there should be “one religion” in the US. The first (and almost only) thing I learned about Rhode Island when I was a kid is that it was founded by Roger Williams on the idea of religious toleration. These people don’t know, or wouldn’t honor, their own history when they voted for Flynn.

@randy khan: The original capital burned down at the start of the Great Depression which had been going on in North Dakota for more than a decade by that time so those good Norwegians built something practical. Saved all the fancy stuff for the interior decoration. Supposedly it has the highest percentage of usable office space of any state capital.
