On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.

This park was formerly named Patrick’s Point, but has been renamed for a Native American village used by the Yurok tribe. Sumeg village has been reconstructed in the park and is used by the Yuroks on ceremonial occasions. This was our base for seeing the Redwoods, but while we were here we took a couple of walks around the park and saw the sights and the overlooks. The first was Agate Beach, where our campsite was located. The second was Wedding Rock and the area around it.
Reconstructed Sumeg village
Agate Beach near our campsite. It was much too cold and windy to think about going in the ocean. Plus, the Japan Current brings the water at the beaches down from Alaska.
This is also why you don’t want to go in the ocean.
A waterfall along the trail
Agate Beach, named because of the stones that can be found in the gravel.

Trail to Lookout Point
Our campsite, around noon as the clouds are starting to break up. On arrival, we found out to our surprise that there were no hookups and we were booked for five nights thinking that there were. I set up the portable solar panel and we got enough sunlight when the clouds lifted to keep the battery somewhat charged. We were OK for everything except the propane heater, because the fan used a lot of power. So, cold nights!
Stellar’s Jay. These guys were all over the campground. Very good moochers!
OzarkHillbilly
The Gray Jays I am familiar with are just plain thieves.
Thanx for the pics.
MagdaInBlack
@OzarkHillbilly: Are those what we called “Whiskey Jacks?”
Friendly little thieves who will take pancakes right off your plate?
OzarkHillbilly
@MagdaInBlack:
Right you are! I had forgotten that particular nomenclature. We just called them “gawddamned thieving little sonsabitches!”
eta: funnily enough, we called bears the same, except we left out the “little.”

Looks like a great spot for camping, once you know about the lack of hookups.

Very pretty photos!

I’ve been there when it was Patrick;s Point. Looks like you got a sunnier day than I did! And Agate Beach is aptly named; there are some pretty rocks to be found there. I still have some around here somewhere :-)
Thanks for these, and thanks to all the folks who contribute to OTR. This is a great part of Balloon Juice, and I hope more people keep sending in more pics!

What a beautiful place that I have never heard of. Thanks for fixing that for me. I would probably end up down on Agate Beach (AKA: Nature’s Rock Tumbler) freezing my ass off looking for pretty rocks.
StringOnAStick
@OzarkHillbilly: We call them camp robbers. Tenacious!
I love the West coast, especially from Monterey all the way up through Canada. Seeing pine trees by the seashore is magic, and usually means there’s good rocks too.
West of the Rockies
We’ve been to that stunning beach recently, too. Thank you for sharing your words and photos!
Has anyone done a post here about the Samuel Boardman Scenic Corridor just north of Brookings, OR? Heaven on Earth.
Anyway
Beautiful pictures and pretty locations. I love the Northern Cal and OR coastline but never heard of these parks. So many places to check out … Thanks for sharing.

Agree with the scope of String on…. re loving the NOCA coast, but would include from further south, the Big Sur area.
I haven’t been to the northern most CA coast, but this site is lovely and who doesn’t like looking for agates or shells along a coast. Heard once that Trinidad is a nice, very small town, did you stop by there?

@West of the Rockies: We didn’t see that particular spot, but the Oregon Coast is coming up soon!

Some people like beaches, some prefer mountain views. For me, it’s that “Trail to Lookout Point” image, with the path winding away through the trees. Pure magic. But all these shots are interesting — thanks!

I didn’t know that Patrick’s Point had been renamed for a former Yurok village. Glad to see this sprout of resurgent tribal culture.
Yutsano
Oh yeah. You have to be careful with them Stellar’s jays. They will try to thieve as much as they can.
EDIT: it’s always been a dream to follow the Pacific Coast Highway from the beginning in the Olympics to the end in San Diego. Preferably in a convertible.
