Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

Second rate reporter says what?

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

The lights are all blinking red.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

When we show up, we win.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

You cannot love your country only when you win.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

Find someone who loves you the way trump and maga love traitors.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

After due consideration, I’ve decided my favorite reaction to the debate is the one from Erick Erickson screaming at all the other RWNJs for using the “eating your pets” slur so often that it managed to penetrate into Trump’s brain

(Related, though not directly about the debate, Asher Langton notes: “Sadly, there actually is a group of people who brutally murder more than 10,000 pet dogs a year in this country. Their union just endorsed Trump.”)

I still wanna know what the fuck was up with the MAYOR OF MOSCOW’S WIFE!!!!!

Fox is having a tough time today, and you love to see it. Meanwhile, Kamala basks in the afterglow of a much-needed beat down of that fat orange clown.

Even Chris Christie’s ever-odious ass was impressed.

Chris Christie: “She was exquisitely well prepared. She laid traps, and he chased every rabbit down every hole…This is the difference between someone who’s well-prepared and someone who’s unprepared. Whoever did debate prep for Donald Trump should be fired.”

Alexandra Petri is, as ever, a treasure: The Trump-Harris debate, summarized

Moderator Linsey Davis: Donald Trump, just say things that a person would say. They don’t have to be in response to the question. They can just be words. “Person,” “woman,” “man,” “camera,” “TV,” for example. Just words that a normal person might say. Not a talk radio host, a normal person. Just to prove you can. Just until the end of the debate.

    […]

Donald Trump: [foaming at the mouth] Excuse me! Excuse me! Officer, that lady — very rude! — said my rallies are small. They are not small! They are large, above average! Everyone says they are pleasurable and last the right amount of time! No one even goes to her rallies! I don’t think women even have rallies! JD Vance says they’re not allowed to congregate like that. I’m so mad and keyed up right now! It’s got to be the fault of immigrants who are ruining this country! In Springfield, they’re eating the dogs. The people that came in. They’re eating the cats. They’re eating — they’re eating the pets of the people that live there. [This is a verbatim quote.])

[The moderators pull out a big clock from under their desk and reset it.]

Muir: [resetting the clock a third time] Okay, Donald. It’s okay. Don’t get frustrated! You can try again. Just normal words. Things where if you said them to a stranger next to you on the city bus, he would stay the same distance away from you and not move farther away.

Trump: A city bus? What’s that?

Harris: Like a limo, but with more sharing.

Trump: Not her. I don’t want her to talk. When she talks I get upset! She is a Marxist, like her father.

Muir: [resetting] Okay. How about a question? Nationwide abortion ban. JD Vance said you wouldn’t sign one.

Trump: I don’t really talk to JD Vance about everything.

[Everyone nods encouragingly. The clock keeps ticking.]

Trump: Excuse me, I have to respond. I have been a leader on fertilization.

[The moderators sigh and reset the clock.]

Harris: For someone who hasn’t been discussing things with JD Vance, you sound as if you’ve been discussing things with JD Vance.

On the positive side, I am enjoying reading/watching the reactions to last night’s debate, as I went to bed early and didn’t watch live. Woke up around midnight, threw some money at the campaign to help run up the score, and didn’t check any headlines until morning. Is it accurate to summarize that the wisdom of our media betters yesterday was that this debate was the MOST important thing and today it’s “debates don’t matter”?

Too bad for him Taylor Swift has her own reputation and fortune and much better taste in companions.

And I wouldn’t like to be in Elmo’s shoes when the Swifties decide what to do about him. (Caveat: all I know about the Swifties is what they did to Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem over a syntax-mangled compliment that got autocorrected into an insult.)

He says after he gets these other tests he’ll know more about what treatment to do, if any. He’s fully aware of my husband’s other health problems; we know that something like a bone marrow transplant is not in the cards for him, it would probably kill him to even try it. • Taylor Swift songs get cued up at the official Harris debate watch party where Harris is speaking

They leave nothing to chance.   It is the best run campaign I have seen since Obama08 and given that they have had only a tiny fraction of the time to get things in gear compared to Obama’s campaign, are doing an even more impressive job.  The Obama campaigns early months were pretty rough actually.  They didn’t really hit their stride until nearly a year in.

I am late to all threads. Kitchen cabinet update project keeps me off the internet. Just got in a dust up on FB with a Trumper who is friends with a musician friend of mine. My musician friend is all in re Harris. He doesn’t cull his friends like I do.

Anyway, the Trumper is doing her own research. Someone connected to ABC introduced Harris to Emhoff way back. This proves the debate was rigged. (Harris got all questions ahead of time). And if that wasn’t enough, this Trumper has done a Google search and found KH’s earrings on line. They were equipped with microphones.

@Tim C.: The first gen ones were slower.  But the current model (which is obsolete in other ways) is actually not really a slouch.  Electric motors have so much more low-end torque than gas engines that it is trivially easy to build them that will accelerate fast

That is the same reason why all locomotives are electric.  Even the diesel ones are simply a diesel generator feeding electricity to electric motors driving the wheels.

I found it!  Here’s the ABC connection (although Doug isn’t really needed):

Harris also has a tight circle of powerful female friends in Hollywood that advise and support her, including Disney’s [Dana] Walden, Amazon Studios chief Jen Salke and Sharon Klein, Disney’s head of TV casting.

Walden is a particularly close friend of many years, having met and been friends since 1994, according to an individual close to Walden. The rise of the two women is indeed remarkable. While Harris finds herself catapulted into a race for the Oval Office, Walden is Disney Entertainment co-chairman and is seen as a potential heir to CEO Bob Iger.

As Puck pointed out this week, Walden and her husband, Matt are among the closest in the industry to Harris and Emhoff, along with Reggie and Chrisette Hudlin.

At a 2022 fundraiser at the Waldens’ home, Harris recalled that the Hudlins introduced her on a blind date to Emhoff, after the Waldens introduced the Hudlins. “So, in many ways, Dana and Matt are responsible for my marriage,” she said according to the pool report. “But [they] have always been extraordinary friends.”

That said, Walden has stopped fundraising for her powerful friend, since as the head of Disney’s television business she runs ABC News, according to a knowledgeable Disney insider. (Though Donald Trump’s friendship with Rupert Murdoch hasn’t made Fox News shy about its support of the Republican candidate.)

Moskowitz: It wasn’t a hidden strategy. They were literally telling people, “We’re going to get under Trump’s skin.” The Trump strategy was also very public — they were going to make sure they didn’t let her get under his skin. Eleven minutes in, she mentions crowd size, and he responds with Viktor Orbán, they’re eating puppies and cats, Abdul, concepts of plans… It was like diarrhea of the mouth as soon as she said “crowd size.” I can’t recall another time where someone telegraphed their plan, let their opponent know about it, the opponent prepared against it, and then, within a second of launching the plan, the opponent fell for it immediately.

@sdhays: His prep could have focused on teaching him to not take the bait and go down rabbit holes on things like crowd size, or people eating cats.  I mean, for sure he’s not going to bone up on policy: and he doesn’t need to: he can just spout lies and get away with it (most of the time).  But he has to actually stay on-topic and know which topics to hammer, right?  And which to stay away from.  So debate prep could have taught him discipline.

Of course, that would have meant forcing him into uncomfortable situations over-and-over-again, which he wouldn’t like.  But that might have worked.  Oh, also, it could have worked on attacks that he could use against Harris (like the “I’m talking now” thing).

President Biden briefly donned a “Trump 2024” hat during a visit to a Shanksville, Pa., fire station in what the White House said was intended as a show of unity on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

“At the Shanksville Fire Station, @POTUS spoke about the country’s bipartisan unity after 9/11 and said we needed to get back to that,” White House senior deputy press secretary Andrew Bates posted on X. “As a gesture, he gave a hat to a Trump supporter who then said that in the same spirit, POTUS should put on his Trump cap. He briefly wore it.”

His campaign could have hired “the very best debate preppers” and stolen all of the questions ABC was going to ask and in what order and literally told him everything he needed to say or do or strategies to get through the hurtful truths MVP said to him without being triggered, and he would be physically incapable of learning ANY of it.

The only thing he could possible “learn” would be new “awesome” personal insults. But MVP shut that shit down, so….

Bill Clinton’s national security team took bin Laden more seriously than Bush’s team did, and Gore would not have been as complacent as Bush was when he got the warnings. That attack was preventable, and its perpetrators were hiding in plain sight.

Republicans exploited the Pearl Harbor attack, the Chinese intervention in Korea, and the Vietnam quagmire where they could have given Johnson political cover for de-escalation when they knew the war was unwinnable. No, Kamala Harris wasn’t wearing these audio earrings / Right-wing conspiracy theorists claim Harris was wearing the Nova H1 Audio Earrings, but that’s not true. (The Verge, Emma Roth, Sep 11, 2024)

Echoing a long history of political conspiracy theories, X users claimed she wore the Nova H1 Audio Earrings, which double as wireless earpieces. But anyone who looks closely can tell those aren’t what Harris was wearing.

In 2021, Kamala Harris was mocked for worrying about bluetooth (“azure dentition”) security.
Kamala Harris is Bluetooth-phobic (Politico, ALEX THOMPSON, RUBY CRAMER and TINA SFONDELES, 12/06/2021)

While a growing number of consumers are going wireless, the vice president is sticking with the classics. She has long felt that Bluetooth headphones are a security risk. As a result, Harris insists on using wired headphones, three former campaign aides told West Wing Playbook.

Verified with the transcript. Trump actually said during the debate that he “probably took a bullet to the head because of the things that they say about me.”
He is alleging that an ear wound is a head wound. Which brings the Revelation 13 wounded-head-of-the-Beast-miraculously-healed interpretation back to life, at least in Trump’s mind, such as it is.
