Welp, here we are. Tomorrow is the big day, and I have been informed that since the election has officially underway in a few hours in Maine or NH or one of those fucking places, we are now operating under airport rules. Nothing is off limits. Want a cocktail at nine am? Go for it. 1600 calorie Cinnabon at 11pm tonight. Knock yourself out, kid. No one is going to judge.

My dinner was a 10mg edible and I dipped a half a bar of baker’s chocolate into a jar of peanut butter. I have no real appetite. I’ve tried watching tv but can’t focus so I’m just gonna play video games all night and troll twitter.

I’m now just thinking about the potential we could have with a blowout. How many good things we could do. How we could potentially lose Ted Cruz and Rick Scott forever. It’s kinda like the political equivalent of me thinking about how I am going to spend the winnings from my Powerball jackpot I am going to win with my two dollar ticket. But it’s getting me through this.

I know they say this is the most important election ever, and it is. More so than 2020. More so than 2016. Trump is worse even than he was in those, and surrounded by truly awful people.

***

This is great:

Monday Night Open Thread 15

***

Part of the reason my dinner was baker’s chocolate and peanut butter is I packed up my pantry and am taking all my dried goods, canned goods, expirable spices, and frozen goods to the soup kitchen and so there’s not much left but a bunch of tins of kippered snacks and sardines which I am not even going to bother trying to give to the soup kitchen. Damn near every person that comes to my house and sees those items makes a snide remark so I am not going to try to foist them on homeless people who already have it rough enough.

Speaking of packing up, I am in trouble with my mom and dad because apparently I forgot to tell them I am leaving on Thursday. I’ve told everyone. You all know, everyone at work knows, my siblings know, my neighbors know, the lady at the post office knows, Harry at the general store knows, but apparently I neglected to tell them. Oops.

So mom was a little agitated when she found out from my neighbor down the street. The good news is I have spent 54 years prepping her for this kind of disappointment, so she’ll get over it quickly.

That’s it for me. You do what you gotta do to keep sane. I think we got this. I hope.

In the spirit of “the potential we could have with a blowout. How many good things we could do”, I thought maybe we could talk about what we’ll do if Harris wins?  I mean,  in our personal lives, not so much for the country.  I’ll start: I’ve needed to

    • replace my mattress
    • replace my 25yr-old couch
    • buy a car
    • find a new apartment

All things I’ve wanted to do for at least a year, but deferred until I knew whether I’d still be here.  On Wednesday morning, hopefully I can start.

    I think we’ve got this.

My biggest worry about a month ago was that there would be some sort of bullshit Russian sourced October surprise.  And I figured the MSM would jump all over it, however lame and sketchy it was, because of course they would.  But nope.  I guess Putin doesn’t have the time or resources.

The trump campaign has been the worst I’ve seen in a lifetime while the Harris campaign is probably the best.

Trump hasn’t had a good day since the Harris campaign launched.  Even the “assassination attempt” stunt was a total fucking dud.  He’s got nothing.

I’m going to sleep pretty well tonight.  Hope everyone else here does as well.

Georgia will not count thousands of absentee ballots.

ATLANTA (AP) — Thousands of voters in Georgia’s third-largest county who received their absentee ballots late will not get an extension to return them, the state’s highest court decided on Monday.

Cobb County, just north of Atlanta, didn’t mail out absentee ballots to some 3,400 voters who had requested them until late last week. Georgia law says absentee ballots must be received by the close of polls on Election Day. But a judge in a lower court ruled last week that the ballots at issue could be counted if they’re received by this Friday, three days after Election Day, as long as they were postmarked by Tuesday.

The Georgia Supreme Court ruling means the affected Cobb County residents must vote in person on Election Day, which is Tuesday, or bring their absentee ballots to the county elections office by 7 p.m. that day.

The high court ruling instructs county election officials to notify the affected voters by email, text message and in a public message on the county election board’s website. And it orders officials to keep separate and sealed any ballots received after the Election Day deadline but before 5 p.m. Friday.

Three men come to an inn seeking a room. The innkeeper says they can share a room for $30. They agree and each pay him $10. Later that evening the innkeeper decides he charged too much for the room so he gives his assistant $5 and asks him to go give it to the three gentlemen. The assistant decides  to keep $2 for himself and gives each of the men $1. So now each of the three men has paid $9 and the assistant kept $2, for a total of $29. What happened to the other dollar?

NB: It doesn’t matter. Kamala and Tim are going to win in a landslide.

    @SpaceUnit: big Harris/Walz “scandals” this cycle –

    • Harris maybe didn’t work at McDonald’s
    • Her current husband (Doug) was unfaithful to his former wife, before he met Harris
    • Walz romanced a woman in China who still thinks of him to this day (Timmy’s got game!)

For serious, Trump has more actual scandals by 1030am most days.

@Poe Larity: how we got it into the apartment after 3 hours of trying

200-2003 I lived in a 2nd floor apartment in Beacon Hill with a narrow, winding staircase entry. Hooboy that was a tight one.  But moving companies in Boston knew what was what.  They didn’t bother with schlepping stuff up-and-down the stairs: they just moved a truck up with an extensible ramp that they sent right up to the window and everything came out that.  It was quite amazing watching a single guy manhandle a 7foot sleeper sofa in (and years later, out) the window.  Single guy.  Boy howdy strong guy.

And yesterday we passed a Trump convoy and keep seeing Trump signs and hats. WTF? (We are on the Big Island, which is or was the hippie island. But according to friends here, lots of older white Trumpers moved here during the pandemic.)

I wnjoyed very much a siomilar story our debate coach gave us to watch who could explain and persuade. As I recall the story (And I am telling it!) I started out as the only one with the right answer and by class end I had convinced several dozen I was right. A few hld outs just wouldn’t budge.

Kelly knows their child loves horses. So they buy the kid a horse for $100. Kid loves it… but gets scared and won’t go on it. Kelly sells the horse for $120. Kid cries so much, Kelly buys it back for $130. Kid falls off and breaks an arm. Kelly has had enough so sells the horse for $140.

Did Kelly make money or lose money overall?

Was talking to my 18 year old social justice warrior daughter today (the one who got her ballot burned) about the election and how over half her extended family are rural MAGA.

And what I came to realize  is that at age 60 I’ve reached my limit.

I could agree to disagree and still respect people for voting for Reagan.  For voting for Dole.  For voting for either Bush or McCain or Romney.

But at this point in 2024, knowing everything we know about this vile person.   If you still think that Trump is the best person to lead the country into the future then I have zero use for you anymore.   Period.  I’m done

And the fact that we are still having this discussion as nation is just an unbelievable indictment.   My wife who is Chilean is on group chats with all her friends from school back in Santiago.  And they are just in complete disbelief that the election is even close.  And these are mostly wealthy conservative women who would vote conservative in Chile.

    @Jess:

As someone pointed out, comment #45 has the simpler answer.

    3 x -9 = -(25+2)

The guests are out $27 (9*3) and it went to the BH and desk man (2+25).

the $2 is a positive number (cash in hand) so it doesn’t get added to the -$ spent (cash out of pocket), it gets added to the +$ in the till.

@JohnCole So, you’re leaving WVA on Thursday. There’s a certain irony to that, because that state, like the rest of them in the Appalachian-Ozark arc, has been leaving the rest of us since God knows when. It seems to me that the one animating belief of that region can be summed up: “Agin it.” Whatever it is, they’re agin it.
Perhaps part of that stems from the claimed place of origin: Highland Scotland, which had a history of resistance and belligerence and a touchiness about honor. They took pride in being “agin it.”
When I moved in 1975 to serve a church in Western PA, which is definitely Appalachia, I felt like I had stepped into a time warp. It was a working class congregation, and, by and large, they were “agin it.” Even after I established what would become one of the largest food pantries in the county, I heard complaints about the overwhelmingly white recipients as lazy or shiftless or not really deserving. Even though this pantry gained that church a lot of respect in the community, a substantial number were “agin it.”
Appalachia has a lot in common with communities in the southern Black Belt, often economically and culturally left behind. But instead of aligning with the Black Belt, they have aligned with their oppressors. They see themselves as “real Americans” who have been left behind by sinister forces of the modern world, and they are “agin it.”
The fact that the geography of Appalachia stacks the economic chips against them, because their pride of place and fierce independence won’t let them see it. Leaving Appalachia behind feels like a betrayal. So, they see the world moving swiftly away, and they are “agin it.”
It would be easy to dismiss them, except that the most Appalachian state is Pennsylvania. The reason the Commonwealth is a swing state with outsized influence is the two thirds that lie within Appalachia, which is captured by a conservative worldview of being “agin it.”

Point to thumb, index, the three you are skipping, then the other hand one finger at a time, then back to the three you skipped one at a time.

@Mr. Bemused Senior: I’ll see your doggerel and raise you a Stanislaw Lem:
A Poem of Love and Tensor algebra.

Come, let us hasten to a higher plane,
Where dyads tread the fairy fields of Venn,
Their indices bedecked from one to n,
Commingled in an endless Markov chain!

Come, every frustum longs to be a cone,
And every vector dreams of matrices.
Hark to the gentle gradient of the breeze:
It whispers of a more ergodic zone.

In Riemann, Hilbert or in Banach space
Let superscripts and subscripts go their ways.
Our asymptotes no longer out of phase,
We shall encounter, counting, face to face.

I’ll grant thee random access to my heart,
    Thou’lt tell me all the constants of thy love;
And so we two shall all love’s lemmas prove,
And in our bound partition never part.

For what did Cauchy know, or Christoffel,
Or Fourier, or any Boole or Euler,
Wielding their compasses, their pens and rulers,
    Of thy supernal sinusoidal spell?

Cancel me not―for what then shall remain?
    Abscissas some mantissas, modules, modes,
A root or two, a torus and a node:
The inverse of my verse, a null domain.

Ellipse of bliss, converge, O lips divine!
The product of our scalars is defined!
Cyberiad draws nigh, and the skew mind
Cuts capers like a happy haversine.

I see the eigenvalue in thine eye,
I hear the tender tensor in thy sigh.
Bernoulli would have been content to die,
Had he but known such a 2cos 2Φ!

My family are dairy farmers from Mifflin County which is the next valley south of State College and the heart of Amish country.  The family farm where my mother grew up has been in the family (now run by the son of my cousin) since before the Civil War.  Those who aren’t dairy farmers do things like own roofing businesses or trucking businesses.   The actual small town where my kin are from went 90-10 for Trump in 2020.

They love them some Trump.  When I’m not getting farm life memes or deer hunting memes on Facebook it is either evangelical anti-abortion shit or Trump propaganda.

@Jay: o yeh!  In my neck of the woods (Port Aransas, Tx), we have a “retired” shrimper (he doesn’t bother with commercial work anymore) who sells right off the boat.  I’ve bought shrimp from him early in the morning that were still twitching.

    glrble.

It’s quarter of 10 in the morning here, just another working day in the termite-chewed cradle of civilization. October ended with a national holiday celebrating the day the Greeks told the Fascists to go to hell, and late November will see a commemoration of the day the students at the Athens Polytechnic told the ruling military junta to go to hell.

Neither ended well in the short term (Mussolini called Hitler for help, and that crushed the Greeks; the junta sent in tanks to break up the Polytechnic protests), but ultimately the resistance prevailed, what with Mussolini strung up from a lamp post by his heels, Hitler experiencing a mouth full of cyanide and a bullet in the brain, and the leaders of the Colonels’ coup dying in prison after being convicted of treason.

Understood, and really, I’m not picking an argument here, but I was just pondering this today while I was caught in traffic, breathing the diesel fumes from the trucks delivering fresh seafood.

I truly wish there was a better way.

    @Salty Sam:

Well, it’s not the Deplorean, just the residual salt from the shrimp on that 304 stainless will cause a mess in no time.

In BC’s south east, we have some amazing trout fishing streams. Redside cutts, Bull Trout, Whitefish. Up to 6lbs for a Redside Cutt on a dry fly. Up to 40lb Bull Trout on a Redside Cutt fly. 4 lb Whitefish on an Adam’s nymph.

    All catch and release.

Not to preserve the fishery, but because the decades of mining waste and the Teck Lead/Zinc Smelter had made the fish toxic.

@NotMax: actually if we could extrapolate from such a small sample size, Dixville Notch is a terrible portent for Trump. Because? Well, in the primary, DN cast all six votes for Haley. If Trump can only get back half of the Haley vote, he’s got a stompin’ coming!

@a thousand flouncing lurkers (was fidelio): in Denver we had 24 ballot issues, 5 candidates, and 10-20 judges to retain or not. I usually skip the judges, but research the issues, reading the pro and Con literature, calling people I know to discuss. It takes time. It’s a lot to think about.

    Lost my comment, redoing it

Joyce, I’ll try this anchovy on crackers you recommended . It sounds strong.

@Randal Sexton: I think this started as the largest number you could make with 3 digits. Since !, (, and ) are not digits, none of those are usable.

I think that means 9^9^9 is the largest number that can be created with 3 digits (only using carats because I can’t do superscripts with FYWP)
