Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

So very ready.

Trump should be leading, not lying.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

No one could have predicted…

Keep the Immigrants and deport the fascists!

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

I am pretty sure these ‘journalists’ were not always such a bootlicking sycophants.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

How stupid are these people?

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Consistently wrong since 2002

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

Fucking consultants! (of the political variety)

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Politics Isn’t Dead

You Were Lied To

Politics didn’t die just because Trump was elected.   As the vote totals get closer and closer, it’s clear that his victory was a combination of people staying home and some very low information voters voting for Trump.  So, it’s essential that we do what Republicans would do in the same situation:  simple, straightforward messaging of unpopular stuff.  And there will be plenty:

Politics Isn't Dead

One of the podcasts I was listening to recently mentioned that this is an extraordinary time in American political history, because we’re used to long periods of stability (like post-New Deal Democratic dominance).  That’s not the case now.  We’re going to have to message to low-information voters, and also try to understand the media they’re consuming, because they’ll be the margin of victory for the next few elections.

ACA subsidy schemes

by David Anderson|  November 18, 20241:27 pm| 8 Comments

This post is in: Anderson On Health Insurance

The Affordable Care Act subsidy funds will likely be a source of tax cut pay-fors in a reconciliation bill that can pass the Republican controlled Congress with bare majorities.  We need to think about the ACA in three phases of affordability for subsidized enrollees.

  1.  2014-2017 Standard subsidy scheme plus direct CSR reimbursement.
    1.   This is the lowest level of subsidization and it is as the ACA was written and passed in 2010.
  2.  2018-2021 Standard Subsidy + Silverload
    1. This led to a lot of zero premium plan availability up to 210% FPL (ish) and acted as a substantial counterweight to the reduction in advertising and increased administrative burden of the Trump Administration
    2.   Silverloading is, to use a public finance framing, a poorly targeted subsidy that is mostly a transfer to inframarginal enrollees rather than an incentive to marginal enrollees.
  3.  2021-2025 ARPA/IRA subsidies
    1. Still with Silverloading but the fundamental subsidy structure is changed to much richer for people already receiving subsidies and getting rid of the 400% income ceiling.
    2.  Some states have gone through a process known as Premium Alignment to make Silverloading even bigger
    3. Zero premium available up to 250-300% FPLish

The ARPA/IRA subsidies will expire at the end of 2025.  Doing nothing is the easiest action for a Republican trifecta for this.

The next big question is the decision to pay or not pay CSR subsidies directly to insurers. This would require legislation.  It would likely county as a $200 billion dollar pay-for from the current law & policy baseline over a decade.

We are likely going to be flipping between either State #1 or State #2 in a reconciliation bill with a potential that the over 400% FPL cap is removed.  There are also chances that the original subsidy schedule (State #1) will be weakened.

Morning Bro

Folks on Bluesky seem upset by this unsurprising development.

If someone in the comments would be kind enough to explain the allure of Morning Bro, I’d be interested, because I could never understand it.  First and foremost, it’s the way Joe treats Mika, who seems like an intelligent woman with obviously poor taste in men.  He is the biggest mansplaining, interrupting, preening dick on the planet.  How do you get past that?  I never could, and every time I was subject to the show (mainly in hotel lobbies or in the gym), I’d get as far away as possible from the screen and the noise.

Second, and realize that I barely have ever watched the show, but from what I saw in the few times that I was subjected to it was the most garden variety beltway gossip.  Very little new or interesting information was imparted.  As far as I could tell, the panel was generally a chorus of yes-men has-beens.

Anyway, the skeet that Anne Laurie posted from Jen Rubin below, where Rubin says she’s swearing off “dumb media”, specifically all cable TV, made me wonder why an intelligent person like Rubin would pay attention to what’s happening on cable in the year 2024.  Then I read this thread from Angry Black Lady, where she confesses that she would hold back criticizing MSNBC and CNN because she wanted to appear on them once in a while.  That explains a lot (and to be crystal clear, I’m not dunking on ABL — her honesty on this topic is refreshing.)

Well, if one good thing has come out of the Trump election, it’s that a former Republican Congressman who’s a dick to his wife a couple of hours every morning on cable will probably lose even more ratings.

Four years ago, we faced unprecedented crises. to do: investigate how certain Dems succeeded (e.g. Slotkin, Gallego, Baldwin); focus on policies' impacts not politics; abandon dumb media (Politico, all cable tv);elevate local and nonprofit media holding powerful accountable; examine the rightwing media disinformation racket; defend vulnerables

I agree with this retrospective conversation:

in retrospect bidens decision to do the right thing on Afghanistan was incredibly telling: he did the thing nominally leftist critics wanted, trump said he would do, and msm critics were demanding he provide An Affirmative Answer on and got pilloried from every corner as a result

On The Road - Albatrossity - Big Sur Country 10

Albatrossity

Many of you have no doubt visited the California coast, and on that coast there is no more iconic stretch than the Big Sur section. Stretching from Carmel to San Simeon, it is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the country, and rightfully so. Periodically the coast highway (California Highway 1) is closed by mudslides somewhere along the way, and that is true when I visited. A prodigious slide about 40 miles south of Carmel closed the road there, and it is not expected to reopen until sometime in 2025, at the earliest.

Nevertheless, my buddy Mark, his wife Jana, and I ventured out to see if we could find some birds (target species – California Condor) and see some scenery along that scenic coast. Here are some of the images from that day. Spoiler – We did not find any condors, alas.

We had a beautiful day for the trip. The fog cleared in mid-morning, and scenic vistas were plentiful. Here is a look north, with the famous Bixby Creek Bridge in the distance. Click here for larger image.

12 of 14 participants in this week's sessions said they were familiar with Musk's advising Trump. Of those, five said it's a bad thing, seven didn't know what to say and none would say it was good.

Still alive, still taking horse pills. Starting to feel a little better and let Joelle coax me into leaving the house to go get Indian for dinner, which definitely opened up the sinuses. I’ll be back in the saddle again tomorrow, I hope.

You kids be cool.
