The crowd in Paris celebrating Le Pen’s death is large.
He was a convicted Holocaust denier & his political views were rife with racism, Islamophobia & anti-semitism.
To many, he was a stain on French politics which remains to this day, despite his daughter’s attempts to soften the party’s image.

I am a bad person, but demonstrably not the only one fantasizing about this setting a precedent for the imminent expiration of a certain powerful American bigot…
Live your life such that your funeral isn't this joyous.

I wonder how the first convo with Hitler will go in hell. I’d imagine he might take Holocaust denial personally. All that effort for naught!
HeleninEire
This is soooo gonna happen when Trump dies. I know for sure I’ll be in the crowd. Even if I have to fly back from Dublin where I plan to escape.
Miki
We can only hope ….
ArchTeryx
Wow. The French don’t hold anything back, do they? Firing off fireworks to celebrate someone’s death in the center square of Paris?
Imagine the sheer number of Villagers that would run for the fainting couches if we did this on the Mall the day of Trump’s death. Why, it might start a trend!
Suzanne
Man, I hope Marine Le Pen, Orange, Bibi, and other utterly contemptible pieces of shit are watching this.
KatKapCC
@ArchTeryx: I think the only thing to rival it will be Ukrainians when Putin finally croaks.
HeleninEire
LOL Cole just Bigfooted the thread. I guess it’s his perogative.
comrade scotts agenda of rage
We can only hope that Ukraine still exists as an independent state when Putin finally croaks.
I’m convinced he’s using the same life prolonging apparatus that Darth Cheney’s used to get this far, meaning he’s got at least another 11 years at the helm. Sigh.
Elizabelle
We are going to be doing that for The Felon. For Murdoch. Who else?
Elizabelle
Proud of the French. Le Pen was a horrible, horrible man. Rest in flames.
Elizabelle
Prayers for the safety of firefighters in Pacific Palisades, and for those in the fire’s path. Those winds are insanely dangerous.
Old School
I’m no expert on French politics, but if his daughter was softer, I can why people are celebrating.
Mathguy
“…not the only one fantasizing about this setting a precedent for the imminent expiration of a certain powerful American bigot…”
Well, I have a good guess as to who that might be, but it encompasses almost the entire GOP at the moment.
WaterGirl
I can’t make out what they are shouting in the video. Eat him up? Heat it up?
geg6
I hope that orange shitstain is watching this and quivering like the cowardly garbage that he is. I feel very French tonight. Sadly, I have no French blood but I did have an uncle by marriage, Marcel Hegert, who was first generation French American. So I say that counts.
Suzanne
@WaterGirl: I thought it was “He is dead!”.
geg6
@Suzanne:
That’s what I thought but my French isn’t all that good.
WaterGirl
@Suzanne: @geg6:
Duh. I wasn’t thinking about the fact that they were shouting in French, a language I do not know.
KatKapCC
@WaterGirl: Yeah, it sounds like “Il est mort” which means “He is dead”. Right to the point!
hotshoe
@Elizabelle:
That’s my growing-up territory.
Haven’t been back in … umm … decades, so it’s not as if I know anyone personally who is in danger.
But I remember how impossible it was to get out of one of the canyons back there.
Worst place I can imagine to be near a fire in 100-mile winds.
zhena gogolia
@WaterGirl: I’m hearing “Vive la France!” (“long live France”)
SORRY I just listened again — they’re saying “il est mort” (he is dead), as noted above. Funny that I heard it as Vive la France, which would also be good!
wmd
Normally this would call for opening champagne. However there’s still champagne from New Years, so he’s not going to have a celebratory toast to his descent into hell with a fresh crack like Kissinger and Lieberman.
Andrew Abshier
I’m remembering the literal dancing in the streets after Biden was declared the winner of the 2020 election. The demise of you-know-who should trigger a similar outburst, if not more.
hotshoe
@Old School: I’m gonna be the asshole and say “too bad it wasn’t the daughter who died today”.
Old man should have been in hell decades ago, but at least he was no longer politically powerful.
Daughter didn’t succeed in destroying French government in recent elections, but she’s still alive, she still has power with her followers, still dangerous to freedom, democracy, peace.
I’m actually sure there is no Hell but that doesn’t stop me from hoping that there is, so that I could wish her in it.

@Andrew Abshier:
This is why I do chair yoga now, so I’ll be limber and flexible when the day arrives.
Princess
This will be us some day. Dream it, believe it.
Baud
@Princess:
I look forward to being lectured on civility by all the institutes that have been ignoring Trump and Republican behavior.
Elizabelle
@hotshoe: It’s such a beautiful area, but windy roads and intense development. So weird to watch the footage, and realize the rest of LA is seeing a sunny blue sky day, albeit incredibly high winds.
Gretchen
@HeleninEire: I’ll bet there will be joyous crowds in Dublin that you can join without making the trip. But I hope the even happens sooner – aren’t you here for another year?
mrmoshpotato
A celebratory line of full bladders.
HeleninEire
@Gretchen: I am here for at least another year. But more if my Dad is here. He is 90 and I will care for him as long as he needs me to but once he is gone…so am I.
Mustang Bobby
As Red Skelton said at the very well-attended funeral of much-hated producer Harry Cohn: “That’s show business: give the people what they want, they’ll show up.”
artem1s
I remember the videos of the Irish football fans singing ‘Lizzie’s in a box’ when the Queen died. I can empathize with both them and the French.
prostratedragon
@Gretchen: At this point, there will be joyous crowds in Greenland.
SW
The only upside to the disappointment of November is that the state funeral is going to be lit.
Daoud bin Daoud
@WaterGirl: they’re chanting “il est mort” (he is dead!).
No One of Consequence
@zhena gogolia: My analog audio processing units heard that too. Not just you. Je parle un petite peux de Francais. Trop petite peux.
