So meta has announced they are just dumping all fact checkers, and on the same day the Washington Post laid off a bunch of staff AS Jeff Bezo and company at Amazon were sinking 40 million into a Melania documentary. Meanwhile, the North Carolina Supreme Court is trying to steal an election for Republicans and Trump’s favorite judge blocked the release of the investigation into the stolen documents case. What a time to be alive. This is the only appropriate response to the events of the day:

Before they strip all the copper wire out of the government they should bring back Quaaludes

In other news, I had to pick up my friend’s kid at the airport, and I don’t know if you know anything about Sky Harbor airport, but it is an absolute train wreck trying to pick up someone there as there is no place for you to park and they yell at you for slowing down to let someone get in. And they always have these aggressive meathead rent a cops yelling at everyone.

I timed it so the kid had his baggage picked up and we knew exactly which door to meet, and as I saw him coming out with his luggage the rentacop started yelling at me to move. They always try to be loud and intimidating which really doesn’t work on people who don’t fucking care, and our interaction went like this:

Guard: YOU NEED TO KEEP MOVING

Me: Pretends he is talking to someone else

Guard: I SAID YOU NEED TO MOVE!

Me: Are you talking to me? Why are you using your big boy voice at me?

Guard: YOU NEED TO MOVE- DON’T MAKE ME SAY IT A THIRD TIME

Me: Actually that was the third time.

Guard: MOVE.

Me: That’s four now. Gonna shoot for five?

At this point the kid was getting in the car so I just rolled up my window and ignored him and drove off.

Oh, another interesting fact- I couldn’t move because I was blocked in by the car in front of me and the car behind me and the traffic whizzing by at 35 to my left. That apparently didn’t matter to mr. big mouth with the yellow vest.

Was it inappropriate on my part? Probably. Did I do it with a smile the whole time? Yeah. Do I care? No. I spend all the time I am out of the house trying to be friendly and not a problem and smile and I am kind to staff and I just don’t need some aggressive dickhead yelling at me. Whatever.

It’s chilly here and looks like it is going to rain, and neither of us cared to do anything about dinner so we’re just doing leftovers and probably going to watch some tv while the rest of the world collapses around us.

I once again would like to ask you all to be kind to each other in the comments.

I just rubbed a nose in a dirty diaper – a friend who did not vote Dem had her hot water heater take a dump yesterday. She couldn’t get credit to pay the plumber because of medical debt on her credit report.  I let her bitch about it for a while, then I sent her an article on the new Rule announcement TODAY by VP Harris on behalf of President Biden and the CFPB.

    time.com/7205200/biden-admin-unpaid-medical-bills-credit-reports/

I paid her mortgage off for her years back and will not lift a financial finger to help ever again after she bit me.  Thankfully President Biden did, but that won’t go into effect for another 60 days. Sucks to be her (it’s a long story I told here in the past).

Because I apparently can’t with all the big stuff, I am very intrigued about Melania’s documentary. I posted a bit about it a few days ago.  I am just curious what the purpose of it is.  There are so many possibilities and none of those possibilities have to do with documenting a life well-lived, worthy of a wide release documentary in theaters.

Sky Harbor is a nightmare, and my home airport is LAX, so I know badly designed airports.  The whole drop off/pick up structure at PHX  is designed to discourage you from driving to the airport but instead use public transportation.  BUT THERE IS PRACTICALLY NO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IN PHOENIX.  Sorry to shout.  I love Phoenix but I loathe that airport.  Also it was built for a city about one thirtieth the size of the current population.

I will say one thing for Phoenix Sky Harbor: I recall they’ve got a fairly nice-looking shopping-mall-like environment behind security, with lots of places to eat and such.

I’ve never had to pick anyone up there.

At Boston Logan they usually have a bunch of actual cops just parked near the beginning of the pickup area with their lights on, and they don’t seem to do anything but wave people past them while their cars funnel traffic into the lane where they want through traffic to be. I don’t know. It’s still a mess near the curb but I don’t recall getting shouted at.

What exactly is the point of a Melania documentary, anyway? She’s a non-entity who isn’t a pleasant person and is a plagiarist. She’s no Michelle Obama. Like, what has she done in her life that didn’t involve marrying into money? Modeling? Nothing wrong with that as a career, but again, why does that warrant a $40 million dollar Amazon doc? What’s so interesting about her life?

It’s a gigantic bribe to Trump, packaged as a “fee” to his wife for her services and involvement in producing this movie.  About her.

The irony is that when Joe Biden handled some of Hunter Biden’s car payments for him, the GOP screamed about the fungibility of money, and about this being undercover corruption and funds transfers inside the Biden Crime Family. Now you have actual massive multi-million dollar bribes flowing through the Trump family members in plain view, and it is met with shrugs and indifference and silence.

But even getting off the Airtrain there is sooo much construction to walk around.

They will hold SD-32 and HD-26 in eastern Loudon County.

This will allow them to control the agenda in the upcoming session.

The Loudon County State Senate election was to replace Senate Senator Suhas Subramanyam. He was elected to Congress from the 10th CD last November. Subramanyam replaces Rep. Jennifer Wexton who retired for health reasons.

The Donald probably only has a vague idea of which middle-aged woman in his immediate line of sight is actually Melania, but he does love having his name on things. And who knows? Maybe he thinks it’ll stick it to Stormy Daniels if it turns out he’s slept with two ‘actors’.

As for Melyawnia herself, current theory is she’s only still around because she had to sign an airtight prenup that says he’s the one who ends it or else she’s cut off. If she makes enough money off stuff like this, she can leave and have enough to tide her over between coloring book deals.

Sorry about your experience. I can tell you that Sky Harbor is 100 times better for pickup than Newark. My biggest gripe about Sky Harbor is it’s a bit confusing to get out of and I’ve messed that up more than once.

No, not yet at least. NBC live updates

    8 minutes ago:

Despite ominous imagery from the scene, the Los Angeles Fire Department said this evening that flames have reached the famed Getty Villa property but the museum is not on fire.

Firefighters were defending the structure as the Palisades Fire continued to spread amid winds of greater than 50 mph, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson Margaret Stewart said.

“The Villa itself is not burning, but vegetation around the building is burning,” she said. “The structure is not damaged.”
In a statement just after 5 p.m., the Getty Villa Museum and Getty Center said flames reached the grounds on the coast in Pacific Palisades.

“Some trees and vegetation on site have burned, but staff and the collection remain safe,” spokesperson Alexandria Sivak said in the statement.

As it stands today, the Afeela 1 will be offered in two trim levels in the US:

Afeela 1 Origin: starting at $89,900
Afeela 1 Signature: starting at $102,900

Both model variants include a three-year subscription for various features, such as the Level 2 driver assistance system and other AI-powered features. Pre-orders are now open to customers in the state of California. EV buyers must pay a refundable deposit of $200, with deliveries for the Signature variant expected to begin in mid-2026. The cheaper Sony Honda Afefela 1 Origin variant, on the other hand, is not expected to be delivered until 2027.

Um… Good luck with that! :-/

Sure, but what do you think Bezos is getting out of it? What is Trump getting out of it?

I don’t know what Bezos expects from Trump.

At a minimum, Trump will get a few million upfront for the right to use Melania’s image and get details about her past. Beyond that, I don’t know what Bezos plans to offer.

As a country, it seems our institutions – federal law enforcement, judges, media, etc. – are going to turn a blind eye towards corruption and bribery, and many Americans will cheer this development in our politics.

Republicans have been hammering away at all changes that happened, since Brown v. Board of Education for the last 50 years, which include court cases and laws that make things fairer for everyone and attempts to curb the corrupting influence of money in politics.

I think 2024 will be a big shift both culturally and politically to a revanchist world view on American culture and a political system enthrall to billionaires.

@kissel: they do this in Seattle.  So, since departures is just one easily reached level right above arrivals, and since drop-offs absolutely do not wait around at the end of the terminal where the international airlines depart (because everyone flying to Asia is being driven to the airport by a professional driver) that’s become the secret pickup place in SeaTac.  We found it out when my brother dropped me off to fly to China back in 2013; he was like, this has got to be the only place in SeaTac without any cars.  So now whenever I fly into Seattle he picks me up there.

This past Christmas, though, that corner of SeaTac was haunted with people standing around with suitcases, suggesting that the secret pickup place is becoming not so secret.

also SeaTac can now be reached on the light rail, although at the other end of the airport from the secret pickup location.  Public transport to the airport, yeah!

Should boost Dem numbers a little more, but nothing significant. Dem slide in Loudoun stopped at least tonight”

UPDATE 7:46 pm: With 55/57 precincts reporting in SD32, Kannan Srinivasan (D) is winning by a 61.2%-38.6% margin, with 29,647 votes counted so far. And in HD26, JJ Singh (D) is winning by a 61.3%-38.2% margin, with 9,967 votes counted. In SD10, Luther Cifers (R) is winning by a 58.2%-41.7% margin, with  15,022 votes counted so far.
