Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

When we show up, we win.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

To the privileged, equality seems like oppression.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

We will not go back.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Fear and negativity are contagious, but so is courage!

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

I am pretty sure these ‘journalists’ were not always such a bootlicking sycophants.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

Simon Rosenberg says in this post that it’s time to acknowledge that Trump is a sadist.

That’s an understatement!

I think it’s LONG PAST time to to acknowledge that Trump is a sadist.

I think it’s time to acknowledge that Trump is a sadist. He likes harming people, killing them: – USAID vaporization, 10m dead- Killing people on high seas- ICE terror regime- Cutting health care, food assistance to tens of millions- Iran War, backing genocidal Putin

It's Long Past Time 1

Have the Benghazi hearings started yet?

Several hours after reports of the Supreme Leader’s death in Iran, 500 Shia Muslims stormed the U.S. consulate.

9 people were killed.

Did this fucked up administration even communicate with any of our embassies that region?

At least 9 people were killed in an attack on the U.S.consulate in PakistanThis was confirmed by a correspondent of Radio Liberty’s Pakistani service at the scene.Several hours after reports of the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei, around five hundred Shia Muslims stormed the U.S. consulate

Fucking Sadistic Idiots

If we’re not part of the solution, we’re part of the problem.

I challenge every single person who makes even one comment on Balloon Juice today to make the calls to your elected officials today.

Even if your elected officials are blood red and evil and heartless, they can count.

They will be getting a lot of calls in support of this illegal and immoral attack.  Add your call to the other column:

WE NEED THE WAR POWERS RESOLUTION TO PASS.

@Spanky: And, as an analog to the “Trump can grab my (arrow pointing down)” which proves that Republicans still don’t know a damn thing about consent, they can have “Trump can snuff my (insert name/relationship)” shirts, understanding that sometimes a man just has to shoot a man in Vegas, just to watch him die. I can’t believe they didn’t evacuate all the consulates in the Middle East, especially Pakistan. Like I said in a previous thread, I had a dreadful feeling we’d be seeing something along the lines of the barracks bombings in 1980. Of course state department officials are even lower on the losers list than the suckers in the military to today’s GQP leadership, so no great loss I guess?
Anyone on Orangemandius’ short list to take over the grift machine in Iran is sure to be even worse than the current regime, so also, too no great loss I guess?

@prostratedragon: There’s was a novel, Synners, where one person’s motto was “if you can’t eat it and it doesn’t dance, (fornicate) it or throw it away.”

Said person was left dry-humping the refrigerator, and the listener was just waiting to see him try to throw that away.

Doesn’t that just sound like a Trump encounter at an Epstein party?

I think it’s LONG PAST time to acknowledge that Trump is a sadist.

TBH, I don’t think that Trump cares enough about anyone outside of his circle of people who are of use to him to actually care enough to find joy or pleasure at other people’s harm. He doesn’t do what he does because he is craving the sick pleasure that it gives him to hurt others.  Hurting others is just something he does to further his need for power, revenge and narcissistic need. Collateral damage to his toxic narcissism.

But the end result is the same.  For either reason behind his actions, he won’t stop hurting people, cultures and nations until he is King of the World.

It’s long past time to state that the conservative project itself is sadistic. A zero sum game in which human misery is necessary to allow the elite to be happy. Where property rights trump human rights and human well-being. Where greed and envy are virtues and compassion and empathy are vices. Where blessed are the rich for God has given them ease and cursed are the poor for they are lazy and deserve their suffering is their primary beatitude.

Where they would rather burn down the house than agree to live in it as equals and do their part to help it prosper.

It is the ideology of Hell.

I have called. I have mentioned my support of what the Democrats are doing with the War Powers resoluton, but gone on to say that what they are doing is committing mass murder, just like they’ve done with blowing up all the Venezuelans in boats in the Caribbean and Pacific, many miles from our shores.  I have said that Trump, Rubio, Hegseth, and anyone else in the Administration involved in forming these policies that produce these actions need to someday be tried for mass murder, and be sentenced to spend the rest of their lives in prison

      (Verse 1)
Well, come on all of you big strong men

Uncle Sam needs your help again

He’s got himself in a terrible jam

Way down yonder in old Iran

So put down your phones and pick up a gun

We’re gonna have a whole lot of fun
      (Chorus)

And it’s one, two, three, what are we fighting for?

      Don’t ask me, I don’t give a damn

      Next stop is Tehran

And it’s five, six, seven, open up the pearly gates

Well, there ain’t no time to wonder why

      Whoopee! We’re all gonna die
      (Verse 2)

Well, come on generals, let’s move fast

Your big chance has come at last

Now you can go out and get those Reds

      Wait, it’s the Ayatollahs instead

The only good fundamentalist is one that’s dead

And you know that peace can only be won

When we’ve finished the job that we’ve begun
      (Verse 3)

Well, come on mothers throughout the land

Pack your boys off to the desert sand

      Come on fathers, don’t hesitate

Send your sons out before it’s too late

And you can be the first ones on your block

To have your boy come home in a box

      (Chorus)

And it’s one, two, three, what are we fighting for?

      Don’t ask me, I don’t give a damn

      Next stop is Tehran

Doubly stupid to make a martyr of a religious  leader(no matter how evil) when dealing with a religion founded on martydom. The Shia take martydom seriously in a way that west cannot grasp. Shia martyr’s are revered for centuaries, there will be a price.

@Kirklin: Congressional Republicans will get plenty of critical calls about this war, and not just from Democrats and Independents. I saw a real split among Republicans in the run-up to this war, and I think most of the anti-interventionists are not going to rally behind Trump.

As to the general political consequences of this war, I think they’re mostly downside. Even if the war were to have its best possible outcome, the boost to Trump’s popularity would be transitory.

@Warblewarble: Yeah. I have a lot of problems with the New Middle East War Of Choice, but especially:

      1. We started it off by attacking without warning during peace negotiations
      2. The first thing we did was to make a martyr (via missile) of their religious leader

I don’t think anyone trusted us much under Trump, but now it’s doubly ridiculous to do so. And the idea of “they wouldn’t do that, it would be really dumb and counterproductive” doesn’t apply anymore because the Trump Admin just doesn’t care if they’re acting stupidly or not, they just want good video.

@Old School: Venezuela, where we famously didn’t have a plan for the aftermath other than “leave the government in place and threaten the new leaders into giving Trump money personally”? That’s the best case goal? Hoo boy

Spain (alongside Ireland, Norway & Slovenia) has been an outlier among European countries in its ME policy:

      Finbarr Bermingham @fbermingham

Spain refused to provide military support for the attack against Iran, leading the Pentagon to withdraw a dozen KC-135 tanker aircraft deployed at the Morón de la Frontera airbase and Rota airbase, which were used to refuel fighter-bombers in the air

After stating “categorically” Spain has not provided any assistance whatsoever for attack against Iran, Robles explained the cooperation agreement with US, which serves as the framework for the presence of US troops in Spain, “must operate within framework of international law”

I got a live person at Rep. DesJarlais’ office. I was told my message would be related.

I got voicemail only at my two Senators’ offices. I left messages requesting them to sort the War Powers Act so that Congress could reclaim its rightful authority to declare war.

I laid the carnage in the Middle East directly on President Trump. I was measured and polite. Fuck them all.

Potential impact of high oil prices on the US economy (despite the US being a net exporter of oil):

      Rose Kelanic @RKelanic

      Oil Expert Here

Oil price shocks will hurt the U.S. significantly MORE than they will hurt other countries, including China.

That’s true EVEN THOUGH the U.S. is the world’s leading oil producer.

There’s some serious misunderstanding about how oil price spikes from ongoing Hormuz disruptions will affect countries like U.S., China, Russia, EU.

Oil is a global market with one global market price that all consumers pay, regardless of how much oil their individual countries produce.

The fact that the U.S. is a net oil exporter does NOT insulate the U.S. economy.

To the contrary, the oil intensity of the US economy is much higher than that of China, Russia, and EU countries, and that makes price shocks comparatively WORSE for the US in terms of potential economic damage.

The US economy consumes more oil per unit of economic output (GDP) than any of these other countries.

China, in many ways still a developing country, needs oil less than the U.S. does, per capita and per unit of GDP, because they have invested heavily in EVs — so heavily that the PRC is decreasing its reliance on the Middle East.

But US transportation depends extremely heavily on oil, so oil shocks hurt US consumers more.

Even if Trump used authority to suspend US oil exports to other countries, we would still be hurt.

The US oil market is intertwined with the global market, both importing and exporting products, and many domestic refineries aren’t set up to refine US-grade crude oil.

Even many oil experts misunderstand this — the fact that oil intensity matters more than net imports — and I can 100% guarantee the Trump administration does not understand the true nature of the problem.

That said, the damage will be less than the 1970s, because US oil intensity is far lower now than it was then.

Trump is a profound narcissist and that’s more than enough to account for the damage he does to other humans and the planet. I’m guessing folks think “sadist” is some kind of escalation and it really isn’t.

The problem is that people use “narcissist” in colloquial terms and don’t understand that profound clinical narcissism is among the most dangerous psychological disorders. Narcissists act on an entirely different emotional economy that is unrecognizable to normal humans. It’s right up there with psychopath.

Where blessed are the rich for God has given them ease and cursed are the poor for they are lazy and deserve their suffering is their primary beatitude.

Between the record of assaults on children by Trump in the Epstein files released (so far), and the many recorded times he’s mocked and insulted people for being women reporters, or handicapped, or the wrong race, he’s a person who enjoys humiliating others.

Some items from Ankara-based Clash Report:

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaz Salam announced an immediate ban on all Hezbollsh military and security operations and called on members to surrender weapons following missile attacks on Israel, aiming to protect civilians and prevent further escalation.

During the run-up to this war, there was a lot of speculation as to whether Hezbollah would join in on Iran’s side. They did last night, and now Israeli jets are striking Hezbollah targets.

The Lebanese government has been negotiating the surrender of Hezbollah’s weapons for some months now, but it hasn’t forced the issue because Hezbollah outguns the Lebanese Army.

A civilian death off of Oman:

An oil tanker was reportedly hit off of Oman, leaving one crew member dead.

While Qatar has been the closest to an ally Iran has among the Arab Gulf states, the Qataris don’t sound very friendly after numerous missile and drone strikes from their neighbor:

      Qatar Foregn Ministry spokesperson:

Iran has to pay a price for this blatant attack on our people.

An attack like this can’t be left without retaliation.

And from 8 hours ago, a report on the death toll in Iran:

Iran’s Red Crescent says 555 people have been killed in US and Israeli strikes since the start of the air campaign against the country.

There’s really no defense. They thrive on attention and are masters at playing the victim, so any counterattack just makes them stronger. And ignoring them leaves them and their cult free to rampage through your life and destroy it. Now you combine that with the fact that the Terminally Online Left is ready at any time to form a social media lynch mob, and you have yourself a mini-Trump.

The bitterest irony? They’re transmasculine. And decided to adopt the most toxic sort of masculinity possible as part of their new identity.

@WaterGirl: I’ve called all the DC offices of the three who are complicit in this travesty.  The senators never answer but I left messages.  Among other comments are “You sought this power and yet refuse to use it to honor your oath to the Constitution.”  And “Everything, every bit of hunger, unaddressed health issues, every death around the world that is prompted by Trump, is also on you.  You are complicit in your silence and in your failure to use the power that you asked for and were given by the people of this state.”  I talked to a staffer in the Congressman’s office (for 24 minutes) and I was both clear and friendly to the staffer herself.  I think my message might have a better chance of being passed on if I make a decent impression on the staffer.

Then I called the local office of the Congressman and left a message requesting a personal, short appointment, as he may be in the district (they aren’t in session, are they?).  I expect that will be ignored.

      At the very least.

Actually he is far worse than a sadist.

He has no limits to his sadistic bullshit.

He is old, aged out, pompous, arrogant, ignorant, self centered/self serving – at best, and making him president gives him – in his tiny mind – power over every human on earth. He doesn’t give even one shit about anyone else but what he sees in a mirror. His IQ is leaving him in bits and pieces daily. Maybe has already completely left.
