Pete Hegseth, if he does not resign, should at least get out of the way and let better men than him talk to the nation and to the press.

Gift link:

… Perhaps the Pentagon chief’s reluctance to speak to the press is just as well, because many Americans would be alarmed to realize that their sons and daughters in combat are being overseen by a person as callous as Pete Hegseth.

This morning, the defense secretary gave a briefing on the war that quickly degenerated into Trumplike bombast. (Wisely, the Pentagon scheduled this at 8 a.m. eastern time, when most of the country is either sleeping or busy starting their day.) Hegseth apparently prefers to sound more like a Call of Duty player leading a raid than a sober and judicious secretary of defense: “Death and destruction from the sky all day,” he said, along with other empty phrases such as “We’re playing for keeps.” (As opposed to what, exactly?)

Most reporters are now accustomed to Hegseth’s drama-laden antics. But even by the low standards he has set, he managed to shock many of them when he cynically used the deaths of U.S. military personnel to air his own grievances with the press…

On Sunday morning (local time), an Iranian drone hit a makeshift operations center in Kuwait. The Pentagon says that six Americans are dead. Not only is this event a tragedy, but it also requires an explanation: The drone reportedly snuck through U.S. defenses without setting off any alerts, and struck a target that now seems to have been unduly vulnerable to aerial attack.

The defense secretary, the man who is supposed to carry this news to the American public and mourn with them, instead whined about the unfairness of it all. “When a few drones get through or tragic things happen, it’s front-page news. I get it,” Hegseth told the reporters, military personnel, and civilians gathered this morning in the Pentagon. “The press only wants to make the president look bad, but try for once to report the reality. The terms of this war will be set by us at every step. As I said Monday, the mission is laser-focused.”

“Tragic things happen”? Hegseth said this as though it is unreasonable to look any closer at such events. He seems unable to grasp that the deaths of Americans are not merely a public-relations problem: When a drone slips through U.S. defenses and kills six members of America’s armed forces, the deaths of those servicepeople are the story. The people of the United States deserve to know what happened and why. Hegseth complaining that he’s not getting credit for all of the drones that didn’t get through is like an airline executive responding to an air disaster by growling about all of the planes his company made that didn’t crash…

In the midst of all this, Hegseth provided at least one moment of clarity: He showed, yet again, why he is an execrable choice to lead the Pentagon. Like his boss, he does not talk to the American people so much as put on performances for them, and this morning, he played the role of the Fox News pundit castigating other journalists. But the people in the briefing room were doing their job trying to get the facts. Unlike Hegseth, they are taking their responsibilities seriously: This is not a game, it’s not a TV show, and it’s not some adolescent test of wills…

The ironic thing is that having suicide drones that otherwise would have hit Ukraine dropped on our own dumbfuck foreheads is still the closest thing to being an effective defender of the free world Hegseth has ever pulled off.

I am pleased to announce that the Highly Respected United States Senator from the Great State of Oklahoma, Markwayne Mullin, will become the United States Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS), effective March 31, 2026. The current Secretary, Kristi Noem, who has served us well, and has had numerous and spectacular results (especially on the Border!), will be moving to be Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas, our new Security Initiative in the Western Hemisphere we are announcing on Saturday in Doral, Florida. I thank Kristi for her service at “Homeland.”

The Ethics Committee has announced an investigation into Congressman Tony Gonzales’s conduct, and we urge the to act expeditiously. Congressman Gonzales has has said he will fully cooperate with the investigation. We have encouraged him to address these very serious allegations directly with his constituents and his colleagues. 100 billion on Iran war, and if we have any ammo left over we’ll do some shit in the Latin American countries. Ted Cruz wants another tax cut for wealthy people!

Spend spend spend! But you know if we want to forgive student loans, the press will ask “how will we pay for it” while 100 billion would repay everyone’s loans.

An important question has been answered: It is in fact hypothetically possible to be such a piece of shit as a Republican House Representative that even Mike Johnson won’t defend you.

All you have to do is have an affair with one of your staffers, have her literally commit suicide by lighting herself on fire when it’s found out, and then run for reelection while claiming that God has forgiven you.

Turns out the girl’s school was on a site that was military 10 years ago, so someone was using 10 year old data to decide what to bomb. Some reporting says if they’re hitting 1000 sites in short order they must be using AI to choose target. Someone has to pay for using old data to kill little girls.

No, he still needs to be confirmed but can serve immediately as the acting Secretary.

Mullin  would need to be confirmed by the Senate

However, under a federal law governing executive branch vacancies, he would be allowed to serve as an acting Homeland Security secretary as long as his nomination is formally pending.

      That’s incorrect.

In general, the nominee to a covered position may not serve as the acting officer under the Vacancies Act. (5 U.S.C. § 3345(b)(1); NLRB v. SW General, Inc., 137 S. Ct. 929 (2017).) But the act includes several exceptions. First, the nominee may serve as acting officer if they served as first assistant to the position for a minimum period of time prior to the vacancy occurring. (5 U.S.C. § 3345(b)(1)(A).) Second, the nominee may act if: (1) they are the first assistant; (2) the first assistant position is a presidentially appointed, Senate confirmed position; and (3) the nominee was appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate to that position. (5 U.S.C. § 3345(b)(2).) Finally, the President may direct a nominee to act if they previously held the covered position and the President nominated them for reappointment to an additional term without a break in service. (5 U.S.C. § 3345(c)(1).)

      @Jackie: ChatGPT tells me:
“The Shield of the Americas” is an honorary title/award associated with the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC), a U.S. Army–run military education center located at Fort Moore (formerly Fort Benning).
WHINSEC is the successor institution to the controversial School of the Americas (SOA), which trained Latin American military and security personnel from 1946 until it was reorganized in 2001.

What the “Shield of the Americas” refers to
The Shield of the Americas is generally:

      • A symbolic recognition or award presented to individuals who have made notable contributions to security cooperation, democracy, and partnership across the Western Hemisphere.
      • Associated with WHINSEC alumni or partners who are viewed as advancing professional military education or inter-American security cooperation.
      • Named to reflect the idea that cooperative security among countries of the Americas forms a “shield” protecting the hemisphere.

      Context and controversy
Because WHINSEC replaced the School of the Americas, the phrase sometimes appears in political or activist discussions about the institution.
The School of the Americas drew criticism because some of its graduates later participated in human rights abuses or military dictatorships in Latin America during the Cold War. Critics often refer to it as the “School of the Assassins.”
When the school was restructured as WHINSEC in 2001, the curriculum was changed to include:

      • Human rights instruction
      • Democratic governance
      • Civil-military relations
      • Rule of law

The Shield of the Americas concept is part of the post-2001 effort to emphasize cooperative security and democratic values among Western Hemisphere militaries.

      In short

      • Shield of the Americas: a symbolic recognition tied to WHINSEC.
      • Purpose: honor contributions to inter-American security cooperation and democratic military professionalism.
      • Institution: successor to the School of the Americas, which historically trained Latin American military officers.

A pardoned J6er sentenced to life in prison for child molestation. GRRRR!

A Florida handyman who was sentenced on Thursday to life in prison for molesting two children had been convicted of storming the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, but was pardoned by President Donald Trump.

Andrew Paul Johnson, 45, is among several Jan. 6 defendants who have been charged with new crimes since Trump’s sweeping act of clemency for Capitol rioters.

On his first day back in the White House last year, Trump pardoned, commuted prison sentences or ordered the dismissal of cases for all 1,500-plus people charged in the attack.

Johnson was convicted last month of two counts of lewd or lascivious molestation of a child and one count of electronically transmitting material harmful to a minor, according to prosecutors in Hernando County, Florida. County Circuit Judge Stephen Toner handed down Johnson’s life sentence.

@Baud: Yeah, all those pesky details that 47 has no time for… (Acting Secretaries do not have all the powers of a Senate confirmed Secretary – so, yeah, they can sit in the chair but that doesn’t mean that they can run roughshod over the place the way Noem did as an Acting person.)

It would be fun if Markwayne resigns and can’t get confirmed for months and various Acting heads of DHS can’t do things that a true Senate-approved secretary can do so DHS grinds to a halt, and Thune can’t get anything done in the Senate either because the margin has shrunk too much…

OK law says the appointed Senate replacement must be of the same party, and the appointee only serves until the next election (Nov 2026).

      Thanks.

      Best wishes,
      Scott.

Which begs the question why there were two Dakotas created in the first place whereas other vast, sparsely populated western states at the time of their creation such as Montana and Nevada weren’t split

Dakota territory was split into two states to be admitted to the union to give Republicans more Senate seats. Montana was a Dem state admitted while Republicans were in charge, so it didn’t get split. (Keeping in mind that this in the post-Civil War era, when the parties were very different than they are now.)

Heather Cox Richardson wrote about it recently; it actually didn’t work out well for Republicans.

As with Trump’s attempt at being Lord Farquaad, troops are just abstract ideas to this administration, to be discards when they break.

Feeling more secure by the second.

Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) revealed President Donald Trump told him that he’d be replacing Kristi Noem as the head of DHS only just before the news became public.

Speaking with reporters on his way into the Capitol on Thursday, the senator said little about his new gig.

“The president and I [have] still got to communicate, so we’ll talk about it moving forward,” Mullin said. “The president and I already talked, obviously [before] the statement went out, but we need to talk with the president, and we’re trying to get on the same page.”

“When did you find out, sir?” A reporter asked.

“A little bit before you guys did,” Mullin replied — before scurrying inside.

After Mullin took point on the media for the administration’s dumb this-is-not-a-war talking point, someone pointed out that Republican electeds clearly know something is indefensible when Markwayne is the face of it. He’ll defend anything, though not we well, because stupid.

Markwayne holds an associate’s degree in construction. That’s it. That’s his entire post-high school education. He’s never been in the military. He’s about to become head of an organization with 260,000 employees and a budget of more than $100 Billion that has the mission of protecting all of us.

It was an insult to see Noem get this job, but this is … another level. Just think of all those career people, highly skilled and deeply knowledgeable about what sorts of threats the USA faces. Their boss is now an ignorant asshole, somehow even worse than the fake beauty queen who thought having puffy lips was a  top line resume item.

[My bolds]

Trump said she would serve as “Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas,” which he described as “our new Security Initiative in the Western Hemisphere.” He added that additional details about the initiative would be announced later this week.

No formal documentation explaining the structure, scope or reporting lines for the initiative has yet been released, leaving analysts uncertain about the practical authority attached to the position.

And as to Vought, yeah he’s a theocrat, but it’s more than that.  He wants a lot LESS government, in particular anything that constrains the behavior of rich White Christianist nationalists and their businesses, and in that respect he’s thoroughly aligned with mainstream old-school Republicans.

And you’re right, he can’t be touched, any more than Reichsführer Miller can.  Alas.

I’ve been asked if I would support Sen. Mullin as Noem’s replacement.
The answer is a resounding NO. The rot in DHS is deep, much deeper than any individual.

It’s a question of policy not personnel. The Senate should not consider any DHS Secretary nominee until DHS and ICE are reined in.

So much news! Did this tidbit get noticed here?

New York Times: “Three veteran Democrats in safe seats who tended to vote with the GOP all lost their primaries by as much as 48 points, as their challengers promised to push back harder against Republicans’ steamrolling approach to legislating. Five Republican incumbents were also swept from the State Legislature.”

Democratic lawmakers who voted with Republicans to override Gov. Josh Stein’s vetoes were handed big losses.

Two of those were from Mecklenburg: Reps. Carla Cunningham and Nasif Majeed, who lost by 48 and 42 percentage points, respectively, according to unofficial results. Rep. Shelly Willingham of Edgecombe also lost in a narrower race.

To be sure, Cunningham was hurt as much by her regrettable remarks on immigrants that followed her veto override vote, and Majeed’s override alienated the LGBTQ+ vote in his Mecklenburg district. But their losses also reflected the heightened intensity of Democratic voters in North Carolina and nationally. They’re angry and motivated in 2026.

      Good for N. Carolinian democrats!

You may recall MarkWayne wanting to fight the teamsters president at a hearing; apparently that incident shook loose a weird story from former Michigan Republican congressman Trott and wife described in this headline (original story in Politico):

For the latest Time cover story titled “Trump’s War,” which was published on Thursday, March 5, correspondent Eric Cortellessa questioned Trump about the details of the unfolding war with Iran. In a pointed moment, he was asked whether it’s reasonable for Americans to have concerns about being attacked at home.

“I guess,” Trump, 79, responded. “But I think they’re worried about that all the time. We think about it all the time. We plan for it. But yeah, you know, we expect some things.”

“Like I said, some people will die,” the president added. “When you go to war, some people will die.”

I can’t believe he didn’t say “That’s a risk I’m willing to take.” IT WAS RIGHT THERE!

funny story, she was giving a speech or something and apparently didn’t know she was fired. It’s what you expect from this administration.

I have this vision of people here and there in the audience playing with their phones and finding that out while she’s speaking. Showing their phone to the people on either side of them, and a titter gradually emerging from the audience that wouldn’t stop.

Looks like the U.S. bombed the school.

Political analysts and observers were outraged on Thursday after an investigation determined that the U.S. was likely responsible for a Feb. 28 strike on a girls’ school in Iran that killed 175 civilians, many of whom were children.

The New York Times reported on Thursday that the strike on the girls’ school in Mina was “severely damaged” around the same time that U.S. forces were conducting an attack against an “adjacent naval base operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.” The Times added that “official statements … suggest they were most likely to have carried out the strike.”

In the several days since the attack, U.S. officials have neither confirmed nor denied responsibility,” according to the report. “Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Wednesday that an investigation was underway. Nadav Shoshani, an Israeli military spokesman, told reporters on Sunday that ‘as of now,’ he was not aware of any Israeli military operation ‘in that area’ at the time.”

Those girls deaths are on FFOTUS.

      Announcement of dismissal

President Trump had the letter dismissing Comey delivered in a manila folder to FBI headquarters[73] in Washington on the evening of Tuesday, May 9, and a press statement was made by Sean Spicer at the same time.[50] Comey was in Los Angeles that day giving a speech to agents at the Los Angeles Field Office, and learned of the termination through a news report being telecast while he was speaking.

      @Gretchen:

Turns out the girl’s school was on a site that was military 10 years ago, so someone was using 10 year old data to decide what to bomb. Some reporting says if they’re hitting 1000 sites in short order they must be using AI to choose target. Someone has to pay for using old data to kill little girls.

I saw that, but it was also noted that a clinic that was carved out of the same military base more recently than the school was not targeted. It could have just been that data on the school was old, but it’s also possible that the current information was present and the AI still incorrectly identified it as the target. The school gave preference to the children of service members so there’s going to be images and data that associate current base personnel with the school and which could have caused the AI to “think” the school was a military as opposed to a civilian target.
